smoltz still had it at age 40. not as old as the big unit but smoltz is a definate future hall of famer. you don't need perfect mechanics to be a good pitcher.
smoltz wouldntt have been as dominent as hes been without amazing mechanics. The bug leagues wont let you play unless your mechanics are flawless smoltz is great dont be a hater.
stfu i hate when people say shit like this, there is no such thing as good pitching mechanics everyone pitches different , hes in the majors right? so his pitching mechanics must be good...
hey idiot, i said smoltz pitching mechanics aren't perfect. you got that, AREN"T PERFECT. I never said they weren't good. so next time read it correctly. and i can think of one pitcher whos mechanics were perfect or close to it, greg maddux. so stop your bitching and grow up.
no fucking such thing as perfect mechanics, whats perfect to you isnt perfect to someone else...so wat the fuck are you talking about everyone pitches different, just cause you like the way greg maddux pitches doesnt mean his is perfect.

He's got a bad motion; he lacks in coordination and he's not smooth enough. I know he's i nthe Major, but he could throw better.
A good pitcher looks graceful; the same gracefulness that makes a ballet dancer being so as to do with coordination, fluidity and smoothness. This also keeps up the kinetic chain for a pitchers.
Smoltz lacks in this and surely could hit a harder throw. He might be a good pitcher, but I'm taking abotu mechanics, not statistics.
Plenty of the greatest hitters and pitchers had unorthodox mechanics. It's irrelevant in the end as some deliveries and stances, no matter how "bad" they look, suit the individual better than what's considered traditional.
The Braves rotation in the 90's was fucking amazing. Smoltz, Glavine, Maddux, Millwood (meh), Steve Avery and Denny Neagle. The Braves should have held onto Jason Schmidt.
The Red Sox have had discussions with representatives of free agent John Smoltz, according to the Boston Herald.
The Red Sox are on Smoltz's short list of teams he'd like to land with this offseason. He might not be ready to pitch until May and is thought to be asking for a deal around $10 million. That might be too risky for the Sox, especially if they sign Mark Teixeira.
Well, Smoltz is gone. The Sox offered himm 3.5million more.
I just can't stand how money plays such a significant role in baseball. Granted, I know it's a business, but they say they're playing for the fans. Sometimes we do not see it. There are circumstances that I'll never understand for why he left, but don't leave for more money or if you feel like your being "taken for granted." Stay in Atlanta for the fans.
flatpiking you suck. grip matters but thats not everything, not even close. this video is really cool two thumbs up to the vid. it shows how extremely hard hitting a pitch in baseball is. this is what pitchers train their whole lives for, to make every pitch look the same out of their hand. a good changeup has nothing to do with movement, speed, anything... it all has to do with deception. if you can throw a fastball 95 then the EXACT same motion provides an 85 mph changeup, youre a hall of famer
thats why he's been around for a while,, a lot of pitchers have different delivery movements when throwing diff. pitches,, whuch puts a lot of strain in the arm,,,the point is that having the same pitching delivery for each pitch,, will cause your arm to be more healthy.
no its not just the grip its how u release it. u can have an effect on the balls movement simply with your wrist or which arm slot you throw it in. sorry dont mean to sound like a smartass just wanted to let you know in case you play
Very true. A lot has to do with the form. How you push off, how far you reach back, how much over the top you come. True grip has to do with some of it but by extending out further and coming over the top real hard you will see more of a break then just grip it for a curveball. When you play, those are the biggest things to spot when facing a tough pitcher, most of what he's going to through is given away in how far he reaches back and you will be able to sit on that specific pitch.

Amazing how the Braves in the 90's didn't win more than 1 championship.

i'd say if smoltz wants to perfect his mechanics don't pull op you feet when you pull up your leg just leave your foot down it takes some stress away

well there are good mechanics...for ex.
you do not want an inverted L
dylf14 2 years ago
@dylf14 I don't see an inverted L in this....and inverted L isn't bad as long as the arm is above the horizontal line of the shoulders at footstrike
tonyjh34 1 year ago
his inverted L went away after he got older

You have zero clue about anything. I pitched professionally, and the above critique lacks any substance or accuracy what so ever.

There's a reason why Smoltz has won over 200 games and also saved over 100. It's because his mechanics worked for him for so long.
