Thanks bones for this. Have just come out yesterday. Walked for the first time without a stick. Some residual pain, ( mild ache is a better description). However, when I was lying down in bed, no pain. ( This was not the case pre surgery)
*Update on my surgery* It's been 7 weeks since I got cut. Back pain is 95% gone, leg pain was 100% gone within 4 days :-) My foot and calf muscle went numb for about a week and a haf and that scared the sh&t out of me! But all is well now though...back to work now and focusing on getting my core and back muscles strong again....it was a rocky ride out of surgery, and at times I cursed myself out for going through with it lol But the outcome was terrific....so those who might be having doubts ju
i had the same surgey. the a pain before was the worse ive ever had. and ive had alot of things happen. i got tossed off my horse and the bull that made her scared got me. but after the surgey it hurt but not near as bad as before. i had to take three months of from the ranch. or so they said. lol but i could go back to truck driving in 2 weeks. but all in all the whole thing realy sucked.
I'm having an op for my L5- s1 on Nov 8th....in high school I "dead lifted" in the weight room the wrong way and snap! There my disc went! Unfortunately I thought I only sprained my hammy so I just laid off of it a while. Every year after that it just got gradually worse until last year i FINALLY got an mri and seen what REALLY happened. So, excruciating pain/numbness/tingling down my left for almost 11yrs...seeing how you've recovered pretty good gives me some hope though :)
WOW! You made it look so easy! I wish I had videoed my Laminectomy. I had a 5 in incision in the back and a 7 inch incision in the front. The surgery took 8 hrs, and I was in the hosp. for 4 days then into a rehab hosp. for two weeks. Hope you're feeling better. Im not :( just had to have another surgery this past Sept. and I had so much stenosis from the last surg. that it left nerves exposed and irritated. Im worse off than I was before. Pain pump, here I come!!!
Just a quick update,Two years later and on the hole i would say i'm 99%, i still get mild pain in my right hip and leg from time to time but nothing compared to the pain i had before. The best advise i can give is keep up the physio and exercise it really helps!
@videobones - what kind of physio and exercises did you do and how long after the operation did you begin them? I just got my L5, S1 operated on for same reasons as you a week ago.
Hey watchers....just wanted to let you all know a much better alternative to solve disc problems is having an artifical disc implanted. I had one put in in germany in december and I am pain free. Check out the Stenum clinic and Dr. Karl Ritter-Lang.
I had one put in at L3-L4 and it is f...ing fabulous. I cannot wait to play tennis this summer after I lose the weight I put on from 2 years of no exercise.
Hi i am a 30 year old single mum and i am sufferin with cronic back pain. The specailist told me i have two lower pro-lapsed discs and a upper bulging disc. I also have a curved spine and i am really scared of havin an op to sort it all out as my kids need me but i cant deal with the pain anymore. Did the op REALLY help u and how long were u not able to do anything for. Many thanks.
@videobones. Thank u very much, yes that does help. Thank your. How long was it until u were up and about again? My consultant said it would be 3 weeks.
@squarer69 yeah it was about that, i was a bit sore for 2 weeks but not as bad as before the op,you have to go steady for quite a few weeks as not to pull the wound to much. i think i had 2 weeks of work, depends what you do? no heavy lifting for 6 to 8 weeks i think.
I've just been put on a waiting list today for the op. For some reason I didn't really ask many questions :o( do they put u to sleep? And do u have to stay in hospital
Or is it just a day thing? I've been stuck in the house most of the time since October, am a little frightened about the op but I will be so glad to get back to worm and get my life back. And get well soon to any one who is going through it. Xx
@squarer69 hi there, i stayed in over night, they did it late afternoon and they put me to sleep, home by lunch time next day, hope this helps and good luck.
Hi, Unfortunately I have suffered 3 previous laminectomies over the past 20 years on the L4-5 disc. Each time I suffered for weeks previous to the op with left leg sciatica. and each op happened about 10 years apart. my first was when I was 18. I am now 43. The last operation a few years ago left me with some slightly painful numbness in my left foot and toes. I am now waiting for my forth op. I know, will he never learn. This disc went as I bent over to pick up a pillow, s**t happens. Dave
I had this exact operation one month ago. Excellent result. No more pain and can look forward to enjoying the rest of my life without that agonising sciatica.
@timbone34 hi for me most of the pain stopped straight away. i only had pain from the operation its self, but i still get the odd twinge now and again, but i,d say i'm 99% fixed
Hey everybody i had surgery about 4 years ago on my L5 S1, it was successful felt better immedialty, my pain in my right leg wsa gone, and i had minor aches and pains along the way as the years went on. News flash i have the same thing again and now i might be going in for surgery two b/c it came back same disk same nerv. L5 S1. I wish everyone that has this surgery gets better and let me know how they are doing
I am having a diskectomy on Sept 28th. I have 3 disks herniated L4, L5 and S1. They are pretty bad. I have to be in a 23hr observation, my doctor said unless anything goes wrong and then I have to stay longer. I think I am more worried about the scar. My husband had it done while in the Army and he has a huge scar, after seeing yours, I am a little less concerned. thanks for sharing
Hey danbones, Sorry I didnt get back to you sooner. I didnt have my surgery until May 10th . They messed me us so bad. I had my L3-L4-L5L5-S1. When I woke up from surgery my right leg hurt so bad, I told the doctor about it and that Ineeded a nerve block shot. They waited 3 weeks before they gave me one. I went to the emergency room on week two and they refused me. Now I have to have surgery to correct that and have them fuse my T12 L-1 And L-2. Take Care and I hope you are well.
I have this exact problem right now with extreme pain and numbness/tingling down my left leg.I've been doing decompression for the past 3 month but it's actually made it worse. At first I was terrified at the thought of surgery thinking one little mistake and I'd be paralyzed but after reading about everyone who's successfully gotten the surgery I'm actually excited to get it and can't wait to be living a normal, pain free life. Thanks a lot for all the feedback and glad you're feeling better!
@socalswar I did L4-L5 with discectomy and fusion. I was scared of paralysis but you cant get paraplegic from lumbar operations. The actual spinal fluid tube stops at the ribs however you can get paralysis of the legs if they nick a nerve. After the mid back the spine becomes nerves and not spinal tube so just the potential for a dead leg if you have a trained ape with Parkinson doing your surgery. Its hard to get paralysis from lumbar surgery. Middle and neck is the danger zone..!
I have a extrusion (basically a herniation) in my L5-S1 disc with extreme pain and numbness/tingling in my left leg.I've been doing decompression for about 3 months now but it's only made it worse. At first I was terrified at the thought of surgery thinking that one little mistake and I'd be paralyzed but after reading about everyone who's had this surgery done i'm actually excited and can't wait to be out of pain and leading a normal life again. Thanks a LOT!! hi i had my lumbar decompresion surgery and also discectomy yesterday i went to theatre at 8:30 and got out of theatre @1pm( thats when I awoke) and was discharged @ 8:30 the same day. there was no catheter also the pain isnt as bad as i thought (it is painful but feels like someones kicked me in the back ) so not too bad at all . all the pain and pins and needles/numbness has gone from both my legs wow its amazing .also everyone @ james cook hospital, middlesborough absolutely fabulous.
I just had this done after 8 months of pain due to prolapsed disc, my wound is a lot bigger though and I have 13 staples! wound is sore but the op was worth it. left foot still slightly numb though, does this improve?
Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone has had a disc replacement? Also wondering if the disc repairs itself after the discetomy or if there's further degeneration? I've just discovered I have a "protrubance" at L4/5 and a "Sequestration" at L5/S1... Sux to be me :(
thanks for reply mate and yea my mussels hav been twitchin alittle bit but not loads so didnt think was related but must be if others have had tht to lol i took me nearly 3 years to get the docs to do an MRI scan and for them to belive me about the pain im just so glad hopfully all over with now im only 24 years old how old r most ppl tht go threw this??
hi just had the same op done 4 days ago all pain down leg has stoped, and other the bein a bit tight around the wound im better then ever, has any 1 else had numb or pins and needles in toes after the op just iv still got that but im not bother as long as iv got rid of the pain thats all im bothered about
I've had the same surgery twice already on my L4/5,L5/S1 with great success for a couple of yrs after the last one,They are now wanting to replace both of them and fuse them,Have to go back in a week to find out what I'm going to do...........glad to hear yours went well and best of luck for the future!!!
the only relief you get from sciatica is surgery i had my op yesterday and there is no pain in leg what so ever back a little sore but still got stitches in, but this is only way to stop sciatica once and for all... truly recommend surgery..
Hi videobones I am 4 days post op now L5/S1 discetomy the best thing I ever did when I woke up in the recovery room I knew the pain was gone. Did a 2 mile walk today and feel great. For anyone who is having symtoms don't put it off. You can spend years in pain and a fortune on Quacks without relief !
I had a discectomy two months back and i am doing qt well now. Almost no pain. I myslef am a physician and though my personal experience may help others. You may find may negative comments, reports of complications etc in forums. REMEMBER that is becuase only those who had some problems will only be coming back to these forums to detail it. The thousands who has a successful surgery moves on..so dont get disheartened. Ask your doc if u need any more details
I am having this surgery in one week. I have my pre op visit in the morning. Mine is L4 L5. This was fun to watch, it made me feel better about the surgery. All other videos are not fun :( Thanks for sharing your experience.
Did you have a hospital stay? The doctor told me that I will go home the same day. How long did your surgery take? How big was the cut? I am having my surgery on Jan 5th 2010.
@pepgrl601 hi i did have a stay in hospital, but it was less than 24 hours and only because i had the op late in the afternoon, they did tell me its done differently in the states and you can normally go home in a few hours, it only takes 2hour tops prob less to do the op and i have a 2inch scar at most, hope this helps good luck
@pepgrl601 Hey, how did your surgery go? I'm probably having this done sometime next month. I'm getting kind of nervous and was wondering how everything came out. I'd really appreciate your input
hello i'm having this awful pain for about a month already and my doc wants to do therapy first....but it isn't working....some people recommended me ozonotherapy...to avoid surgery, have you ever heard about it??? i'm going to give it a shot but i'm really scared about the surgery....
hello sorry i've not heard of that, everyone is different it may be the best option for you? i'd take the advice of your doctor or consultant,i tried therapy first it did improve it , i suffered for years before i finally had surgery, but my job is quite physical and they recommended surgery in the end good luck
Hi videobones - I'm going for my second opinion later in the month, after three epidurals this year, the video is a great help, just a couple of questions, 1. Has the pain completly gone, 2. When were you allowed back to work and finally 3. Are you on any long term meds ?
hi it was 2 weeks before i went back to work but six to 8 weeks before you can do any heavy lifting,i'm on no full time meds and at the present i have no pain at all, hope it works out ok for you?
Cheers for the reply, my doctor can restrict my lifting at work, so no problems there - not to annoy you but since the op have you been allowed any running or swimming ( I have to keep a certain level of fitness for the job..)
hi its best to do as much as possible swimmings really good just don't go mad to soon, building your core muscles is really important you'll no how much you can do but it takes time to repair the wound
How did you make out with the crooked situation after the surgery? I have major R hip and R leg pain along with a major upper body angle to the right. I am having a microdisctomy next week. Thanks for your help
hi it took time but i'd say i'm 99% fixed and standing upright,
all i can say is it worked really well for me, everyone is different and i hope it works as well for everyone else! but you will get better, good luck!!
Hey videobones, thanks for the vid. I go in to have the same op on my left side in a few weeks. I have pain in my left leg and have been unable to sit or drive for nearly a year. Basically I've been lying down in 4 walls since January. I have had root block epidural injections( 2 x lots of 6) and been on loads of pain killers which can't be doing me much good. I wasn't worried about the op till the "what can go wrong" form, arrived to sign, lol. Seeing your vid has eased my anxiety. Thanks man.
How was your recovery. I believe it's been like 7 months now right. my L5 S1 made my disk pop about 7mm and it's hurting more and more. They're doing physical therapy on me and next is epidural shots. then surgery if it's not working. Im just so scared as can be since i havent really had any surgery. How far out was yours? You're video is kinda encouraging though. Are you feeling any symptoms and how long did u have the procedure done. Thanks for posting this video. it's helpful. :)
hi im all fixed now you have nothing to worry about, get it done as soon as possible i remember how much it hurts!! good luck hope it all works out ok for you!
that's good to know. did you do a hemi discectomy? how long did u stay in the hospital? my leg pain in really bad and im pretty much still in denial to avoid the procedure. I haven't had any surgery at all. this is gonna be the first, i think and it's not at all an easy decision. Can u run now or work out? thanks
i stayed in for one night, sometimes it gets better on its own,it happened 3 time to me before i had the op, so you may be lucky, but the op is nothing to worry about i'm really glad i had it done as my life is back to normal now good luck!!
Hello there, I'm having the exact operation next Tuesday, I've had the most awful pain over the past eight weeks,I thought it would drive me crazy,I watched your video and it has given me some hope, thankyou, and I hope you have made a full recovery, I just hope my surgery goes as well as yours did, kindest regards friend,Lorraine
hi ty for writin me back so fast i was thinkin the same thing not fully fixed but everyone says its still early.when i went for my first chkup told surgeon my right hip was achin bad he said sometimes gets that way after this kind of surgery n should go away n it did but now my right leg from my butt on down goes into muscle spasm soon as i start walkin .all my pins n needles r gone to just the spasms which hurt bad.ty again ill keep in touch please do same.we have suffered long enuff.take care.
hi how r u feeling now?i just had this done feb12 i felt much better after but the last few days ive got muscle spasms real bad from right side of my lower back down the back of my right leg ive had this feelin in the beginnin of all my probs 18 months ago.was hopin this would work n get my life back.hope your doing well let know ok please.ty for sharing.
hi i felt alot better just after the op all the pins and needle and pain has gone down my right leg,but i'm still getting muscle spasms and twitching all down my right leg calf muscle mainly, also the top of my leg-hip feels really tight and hurts a bit!! makes me think its not fully fixed, but they says it takes a few weeks to heal and the twithing can take mounths depends on how bad the nerve was compressed, just have to wait and see, let me know how ya get on in the coming weeks cheers mate
going to have the same thing done in a week, how do you feel now... im only 21 and weightlift a lot so not looking forward to all the time missed in the gym and the week of no being in the car haha
i had it done just over a week ago and it felt sore for the first few days, but all the sciatica leg pain had gone when i woke up,they say 6 to 8 weeks before you lift anything heavy but it won't take that long you'll be back in the gym in 3weeks and drifting ya car in a week!!
Thanks bones for this. Have just come out yesterday. Walked for the first time without a stick. Some residual pain, ( mild ache is a better description). However, when I was lying down in bed, no pain. ( This was not the case pre surgery)

the only relief you get from sciatica is surgery i had my op yesterday and there is no pain in leg what so ever back a little sore but still got stitches in, but this is only way to stop sciatica once and for all... truly recommend surgery..

Hi friends,
I had a discectomy two months back and i am doing qt well now. Ask your doc if u need any more details
bye
gud luck

I'd really appreciate your input

hello i'm having this awful pain for about a month already and my doc wants to do therapy first....but it isn't working....some people recommended me ozonotherapy...to avoid surgery, have you ever heard about it??? i'm going to give it a shot but i'm really scared about the surgery....
cotypipi 2 years ago
hello sorry i've not heard of that, everyone is different it may be the best option for you? i'd take the advice of your doctor or consultant,i tried therapy first it did improve it , i suffered for years before i finally had surgery, but my job is quite physical and they recommended surgery in the end good luck

Hi videobones - I'm going for my second opinion later in the month, after three epidurals this year, the video is a great help, just a couple of questions, 1. Has the pain completly gone, 2. When were you allowed back to work and finally 3. Are you on any long term meds ?
Tks

hi it was 2 weeks before i went back to work but six to 8 weeks before you can do any heavy lifting,i'm on no full time meds and at the present i have no pain at all, hope it works out ok for you?
videobones 2 years ago
Cheers for the reply, my doctor can restrict my lifting at work, so no problems there - not to annoy you but since the op have you been allowed any running or swimming ( I have to keep a certain level of fitness for the job..)
bright3633 2 years ago
hi its best to do as much as possible swimmings really good just don't go mad to soon, building your core muscles is really important you'll no how much you can do but it takes time to repair the wound

How did you make out with the crooked situation after the surgery? I have major R hip and R leg pain along with a major upper body angle to the right. I am having a microdisctomy next week. Thanks for your help

hi im all fixed now you have nothing to worry about, get it done as soon as possible i remember how much it hurts!! good luck hope it all works out ok for you!
videobones 2 years ago
that's good to know. did you do a hemi discectomy? how long did u stay in the hospital? my leg pain in really bad and im pretty much still in denial to avoid the procedure. I haven't had any surgery at all. this is gonna be the first, i think and it's not at all an easy decision. Can u run now or work out? thanks
jaeque03 2 years ago
i stayed in for one night, sometimes it gets better on its own,it happened 3 time to me before i had the op, so you may be lucky, but the op is nothing to worry about i'm really glad i had it done as my life is back to normal now good luck!!
