@coreolis7 He takes a long time using numerous comparisons to illustrate the mechanisms of ideology. The comparisons themselves are not connected at the surface, only the underlying mechanisms are. Only after you have been familiarised with all the underlying mechanisms by those examples, then you can see how he has been developing a theory throughout the lecture or the book. It doesn't work when he gets interrupted or when some stories are cut.
Stopping on the very surface of his bombastic comments (his style is partially forced by the laws of the media today, he wouldn`t be heard otherwise) to draw conclusions is exactly what I would do if I was on the opposing (ie right ) side =)
Zizek is not a superstar, he is a poisonous cretin who not only belongs squarely in academia, but in the deluded academia of the previous century. This way that the BBC has of cuddling up to such fools, where they would quite rightly pour opprobrium onto his equivalent from the right, is irresponsible and weak.
@coreolis7 Man, you're online and you're asking this? I have this image of you bobbing around in the sea saying, 'You say there are fish, but I've never seen one.'
In the US, the Right seems ANTI-INTELLECTUAL these days, I guess thats why I have a hard time visualizing an equivalent. But I don't follow mass media very closely. Who do you have in mind as a right wing Zizek? In comparison to American public (subsidized) TV, BBC seems intelligent.
fascinating. capitalists always talk about the free market, and how it leads to individual freedoms... but in the context of capitalisms reality, it's an obscene income disparity that has the majority begging for philanthropic gifts by the very few who control all the money.
@villarreal20 ~ nah, it's just rapid synopsis in combination with a restless mind. i'd be curious to see how much sleep he gets, i imagine him having problems shutting down the thought process.
The culture show missed a trick here, as they without a doubt should have had Mark Kermode interviewing Slavoj. Kermode like Zizek is a "Communist" and a film critic and has his own bumbling persona. The result would have been not so much an interview, more a range of tangents and humorous ones at that. Humour is something which Paul Mason utterly lacks.
"So how did a bearded Slovene philosopher become world-famous...?" That's so rubbish. The presenters look and act like market traders, not cultural observers.
Zizek is like a sort of unpretentious Baudrillard, who actually makes sense wheen you read him. As another unashamed Marxist I find his persona a nice break from the people who are frightened to state their views for fear of being marginalised, but imagine him being a media flash in the pan whether he likes it or not.
I am not familiar with this Paul Mason, but this is a good interview. I understood more of what Zizek stands for than in many others. I find problematic when they "cut" what he really said about Stalin. Nevetheless, it is interesting to hear from Zizek what he thinks about being taken "not so seriously". He ultimately needs and wants to be out of this ideology; as he says, not integrated, proposing brutal theory
The joke at the end was win! "And thank you, and see you either in hell or in communism... *awkward silence* *background: 'are you kdding?'*...no of course... if you are a right-winger you will say 'BUT THEY ARE THE SAME!'"
@qxtctv Yes it does take itself a bit too serious at times - that said some of the items are interesting. But I rarely watch this programme to be honest.
@digitalexistential Yeah i remember they had squarepusher on once - that was good. And i don't mind Lauren Laverne...Mark Kermode - he's good for a laugh sometimes...It's a show which i don't really like but unfortunately have happened to watch several times, and remember a lot of what i've watched. For example I remember they had Paul McCartney on it once, with an acoustic guitar, singing badly, and it was crap.
This bearded balkan twat praises stalin - are you yet another one of these postmodern morons who (in Peep Show Mark's phrase) demonstrate a ironic love of tyrants.
nothing means anything so we cna smile at mass murderers. I bet you have a beard like zizek and uncle joe.
And only simplistic right-wing twats think that's all there is to Zizek's ideas. Read his books, then comment. Zizek's ideas about Stalin are not as simple as you would like everyone to believe they are.
But then, right-wingers aren't known for complex thinking.
@jeffgurdy "[everything is meaningless, therefore] we can smile at mass murderers."
Well, hell: Here in America millions of people idolize Ronald Reagan, a man responsible for the murder of hundreds of thousands of Central Americans. So who, exactly, thinks "everything is meaningless"?
Hi Hacky - Yes I thought the Kung Fu Panda stuff was enjoyable - old slavoj doesn't take himself too seriously. I have some more Zizek video clips from lectures. I also have some Sartre stuff too - a better philosopher in my opinion.
