  • there truly is....another guitar player behind him 8-0

  • I would like to see Michael Manring and Steve Bailey play together.love that tone!

  • i do like his way of playing .like no one

  • i dint know zon would have a booth at namm i always thought they were kinda small?

  • I believe it's called a "Hip Shot" or something like that...basically this tuning pegs have little levers attached to them and for example..if he has it for a low E string and hits it it'll automatically go down to drop d or something to that effect. So this guy has the Hip Shot for every string and also has an adjustable bridge that changes all the pitches so he has a huge advantage to getting many different tunings and keys as well as harmonics.

  • Close, the manufacturer is actually Hipshot. They make normal tuners as well as what Michael has which are called Xtenders or as some call them D-tuners.

  • He also has a bridge which allows him to drop a further tone

  • SCOTT HENDERSON PLAYING BASS!!!

  • if im not mistaken, he has a locking device on there that he moves, and it changes the tune of the string, if you notice some of the notes when he messes with the head stock, the notes go hi or low, like a hammer on or pull off, just on of the things that makes Michael Manring, Michael Manring

  • yes indeed. There's a video on here called "Michael Manring explains the Hyperbass" (LWPHrRwQqVE) where he demonstrates the switches, and also gives an intro to this specific song. He seems like a very funny guy too :)

  • victor wooten, ryan martinie, stu hamm, flea, feildy, marc mcknight,Michael Manring. these are one of my fave bassist. i got alot more it just mentioned these few.

  • This is one of the sickest songs on bass ever.

  • this is one of the most pleasing bass songs there is

  • Can anyone tell me what is his sound configuration...because bass sound is really different and his slaps and pops so easily and amazingly heard...

  • its a special instrument with detuners and light strings just google Zon hyperbass if you wanna find out more, he also tends to use lots of effect pedals

  • well he does use a fretless...

  • The next is fretless, probably 35" scale as it looks a little longer than most. Probably P-Bass style pickup under that cover. 2 band graphic EQ, flatwound strings.

    That is my best guess.

  • his bass has a great sound

  • anyone know the name of this tune?

  • the tune is called "The Enormous Room", from the "Thonk" album. :)

  • All this talk... C'mon and just enjoy the music... Develop your own techniques and try not to copy everyone... This guy has a great synthesis of bass styles which makes him unique. I remember back in 1979 when I tuned my 4-string in 5ths like a cello... talk about teasing your brain to work at relearning scales.... but i got some rather interesting harmonics.... Shame i didn't have my Cubase and Lexicon then...

  • how do you tune bass like a cello?

pls give some specific instructions 'cause I'm curious...Peace

  • a cello is tuned CDGA

  • just give the knobs a turn

search up the standard bass tuning on youtube

and just turn ur knobs till ur cello sounds liek that

  • I love it... Check out Jim Campilongo for the crazyiest tuning on the fly

  • Met him at one of Veasley's Bass Bootcamps. Amazingly talented, not very personable.

  • great solo, but the guy in the background with the porno tash annoys me.

  • How does that bridge work? Two tunings for the two top strings and two tunings for the two bottom?

  • I think they can be set how you like them, although I think the lever on the headstock drops the pitch a full step, while those at the bridge drop a half step?

  • The bridge is the only thing with a lever, he's tuning the headstock manually. Van Halen uses a similar gadget called the hipshot.

  • No, he uses Hipshot X-tenders (also known as D-tuners) on the headstock too. They drop the string a full step down, and back up.

  • No, you can use hipshots to detune to any note up to a 4th or even 5th lower. They are calibrated using a pin on the tuner. The one on the bridge works the same way, but from what i've heard, has 3 setable positions.

  • Ok. Didn't know you could set the d-tuners to drop more than a full note.

  • "Tune that thing!" ha ha ha!

  • that was beautiful

  • Good bass solo...very good...Michael is one the top bass layers in the world!

  • Hes got a bigger brain than me. Fucker!

  • Best ever Bass Solo!

  • amazing

  • totalmente genial .solo para bajistas con oido

  • A truly different approach, an extremely talented musician, but not really my style.

  • lol, Music is not something to be debated, you either like it or you dont! Yes some music is more challenging to play! But more people still prefer the beatles over Michael. It is aggrivating to understand this, but I do not believe a true musician bashes ANY sort of music, thats just being a snob, nobody likes that.

  • it's about time I saw somebody say something like that. Thanks very much. Made my day.

  • im definattly saving up for a zon hyper bass

  • my friend's guitar teacher is michael manring's brother, doug manring.

  • WHEN IS HE GOING TO GO BACK TO WHAT HE DOES BEST: THRASH METAL BASS!!!

I love all of his works, but he's best when he's doing heavy metal stuff, like on "Thonk" or "At War With Self".

HE IS THE REIGNING KING OF THRASH METAL BASS!

  • Thonk is one of most underrated instrumental albums in the history of all mankind. The bass, drums, guitars even the piano are superior. Windham Hill never really promoted the album. The solo bass pieces are mindboggling. Get a copy and you'll know what I mean.

  • Thonk wasn't by Windham Hill. In fact, Manring LEFT Windham Hill when they said they wouldn't produce the album. The label is HIGHSTREET. And I love the fact that Thonk, his best album, is THRASH (well, almost)!

My favorites off of Thonk are: Monkey Businessman, The Enormous Room, My 3 Moons and Cruel and Unusual!

  • Nah, Thonk had pretty awesome reviews when it came out. I like the record soooo much. I have four original Manring CDs.

  • are you kidding? it was a groundbreaking album. It wasn't just another A-quality album. This album was a revolution in the way bass is applied to metal....and don't forget the solo bass pieces.

    Monstrous drumming, hyper shred guitar....

  • Respect.

  • I wonder if I can get Wishnevsky to make something like that... epoxy neck would be mucho extra, though.

  • I got my neck epoxy treated for $50 Canadian funds, not that big of a deal.

  • Thank God or Buddha or Allah or any other God for sending us Michael and his wonderful music!

  • This guy is beyond fame and popularity, a famous band would just slow him down. This is slower than the CD version, but still fantastic.

  • How can people just walk around talking and not stop and stare at his mastery....

  • wow...

does he have a tuner-like thing at the body of the base too? at the bottom of it... what is that?

  • ya he has one on his bridge. from what I remember of an interveiw there is only two bridges like that. but I'm pretty sure zon's designing and making more. because manring wants a bass made that is a 6 string and de-tuners on all 6 strings at the head and bridge.

  • He has detuners on each tuner, as well as a detunable bridge. That way, he can tune each string to four different notes by just flicking a combination of the detuners.

  • i love it when great musicians don't just play notes fast, they have soul in their music. manring is one of those, just incredible.

  • this is art

  • so what's this song called?

  • the song is called "The Enormous Room". It's on the "Thonk" album. :)

  • thanks.

  • does anyone have his instructional video? im thinking about getting it after i get my hipshot extender.

  • which video is that? I only know of the Starlick Sessions tapes......

  • i want his bass.. i doubt it would sounds as amazing in my hands thouhg... it might not even look as cool

    ehaehaeh

    wut a hair cut///

  • Manring owns so much asses.

This is stupidly insanely beautiful and nuts as he keeps tuning differently as he plays..

  • look at the guy back there . Is he real ?

  • Incredible. Ultimate control of the instrument, which is something any true musician should strive for.

  • amazing...i seen this Live and was Beyond impressed...He's such a down to earth guy and Musician...Kudos: to Michael!!!

  • That's the dopest thing I've ever seen.

  • My favorite Manring tune! Love that guy.

  • beautiful, wot a player

  • total ownage, he is awsome

  • Awesome. That sounds like "my three moons". Ive got his instructional DVD and it has this song in higher quality. He is amazing.

  • My mistake. I meant to say "The enormous room"

  • he plays with tim alexander from primus, thats all it takes to be sick as fuck in my eyes, go to www.basslobster.com to see a video of him playing teen town and purple haze. he rules

  • Astounding player. Amazing tuning shifting style, totally unique, and because of the Custom Bridge on his hyperbass, completly impossible to copy at home.

  • they don't sell any similar type of hardware?

    interesting sounding

not instantaneous but like a quick slide

sounds almost exactly like a quick pitch bend on synth
