  • One of the most heartbreaking scenes of the entire 4 season series,IMO.Henry is sitting on his butt at 8:18 trying to read with a looking glass, and you know that he can hear the uproar of the crowd nearby when Surrey was sentenced. I'd think that any king would want to be present and pronounce the verdict and sentence himself.

  • It's horrible how justice was all about what the King wanted, not about any procedure where there were boundaries and such. Henry VIII did a huge level of butchering that still amazes me in it's scope. Even the jurors didn't see anything wrong and the people of Norfolk were supportive of 'their' Earl.

  • @TheNuharoo Toward the end of his rule,it is said that he was very uninvolved in the affairs of his kingdom,as evidenced by his allowing the Bishop and his cronies to make decisions about who to interrogate and in the sentencing of such men as Surrey, who had served him well on the battlefield. The true record of history shows that Surrey was not executed in the manner that he was sentenced to be in "The Tudors",however.

  • got a glimpse of marys darkside...

  • great scene ... thanks for this

  • Correct me if i am wrong, but Surrey was not sentenced to be hung, drawn and 1/4rd, he was actually just beheaded.

  • @TheFooob You are correct.

  • I looooove him , am in David Ohara harem ! :-)

  • Its strange why they chose this guy to play an English lord when he has a strong galsgowegian accent!.

  • wow he doesnt sound irish or anything ;)

  • Ah, it's Stephen, the crazy Irishman from Braveheart! I love David O'Hara

  • Why does he look at Suffolk when he says it was a friendly foe who trapped him? I remember, later in the series, Suffolk himself blames Hertford for "hounding" Surrey to his death.

  • one of the best scenes

  • Both Edward and Thomas Seymour got what they deserved at the hands of Henry's son.

  • Am I right to say that he blames Suffolk as the person who betrayed him to the Seymour faction? It's just the way the earl looks at him and the way Charles hangs head when he looks towards him. What is the real history was Suffolk really involved in his imprisonment?

  • i looooooove him and he so sexy grr !!!!!:-))

  • Is he the Howard that didn't die because the King died first?

  • @JessicaLouiseMusic that was the Earl's father, the Duke of Norfolk, who was also Anne Boleyn's Uncle. Anne Boleyn's mother was Elizabeth Howard, the Duke of Norfolk's sister.

  • @JessicaLouiseMusic Nope, this one was executed...his dad survived because Henry died a day before he was supposed to be executed

  • what are the words to poem, i cant make them out exactly?

  • @igby55 "the happy life be these, the quiet mind, the equal friend, no grudge nor strife, wisdom joined with simplicity, the night discharged of all care."

  • looooove earl of surrey , what a"repartie" ! ;) did you guys know he was raised with henri Fitzroy , the king illigitimate son ...

  • Why he didnt jump by the hole?

  • whose "Rich"????

  • @JessicaLouiseMusic - Richard Rich. The manipulator that turns up whenever someone is about to get executed. If you see Richard Rich, know that someone's about to be offed!

  • Just adore Surrey. Doesn't hurt that David O'Hara is sex on a stick ;-)

  • These were excerpts of his translation ("in sonnet form") that he showed to Suffolk some time before. The original was epigram X:47 by Martialis.

  • What was the quote at the end?

  • The Earl of Surrey was my favourite character in season 4!!!!

such a shame he actually had only a few good scenes

  • I know The Tudors gets a bad press becuase of its historical inacuracies but the last minutes of this scene are the most powerful I have ever scene in a historical drama.

David O' Hara is a terrific actor, the handshake he gives someone as he walks out of the courtroom admist the chaos was a really moving touch.

  • what series is this?

  • @18karan Tudors

  • I love the Earl of Surrey.

  • LOL if he hadn't paused dramatically he would have made it out!

  • When I saw the scene between Catherine Parr and Mary Tudor I realised: I don't thinkg Mary wanted a mother. The way she acted to Henry's last 3 wives shows it a little

  • @Brianboro67 The Howards certainly went through a rough time during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. But the titles Duke of Norfolk and Earl of Arundel and Surrey (as well as the status of Premier Duke and Earl Marshall of England) were all restored to them. So today we have the 18th Duke of Norfolk and his heir, the Earl of Arundel & Surrey, all directly descended through the male line from this Henry Howard, and all have maintained intact their allegiance to the Catholic church.

  • What? The Mad Irishman? Nooo, he can't be...oh my god, he is! I can't believe it's the same person! So fantastic! I am impressed.

  • @btvsgurly its HIS island

  • @Nelsonhojax15 === yes man; its HIS irelanddddddd.

  • David O'Hara is amazing <3 Thanks for this video, I love this passage even if it makes me sad :'( ! Poor earl of Surrey

  • So I was watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part one and David comes on screen.

I was all "He looks familiar. Why does he look familiar?" and then I was all "OMG! It's the Earl of Surrey!"

  • I noticed two mistakes (not in this scene) in the 4 th series. Richie Rich used to be henchman of Cromwell and in favour of the Reformation, and in the last episodes he turns Catholic and aids Gardiner and Lady Mary. And David O'Hara says during the siege of Boulogne he was against this sort of warfare and longed for breaking lances as in the past, but in real life he was only 28 and could never have known much other ways of warfare.

  • @NKismynextgoal Rich part is not a mistake, Rich was an asshole in real life and jumped to whatever religion was in power.

  • Rich swapped sides like a tennis ball He’s been called the worst villain of the 16th century those who knew him said that he never did anything good in his life and that he was a most wretched creature he helped destroy both More and Fisher, he served then turned against Cromwell the Seymour brothers Cranmer and Gardiner personally torturing Gardiner as well as Anne Askew He was also a key player in putting Jane Gray on the throne only to betray her he really is on of history’s bastards

  • David O'Hara was excellent as Surrey. I thought he made the last series.

  • I love when that guy is giving the horrible sentence, Surrey just stares at him as if to say "F*** you!"

  • anyone know what the song is from 6:30?

  • @Blighty4eva It's "Surrey Found Guilty" and is on the Soundtrack

  • @DienerdesFeindes thanks very much

  • Knowing history the way I do now, it's ironic how smug Edward is at the moment, when during the reign of his own nephew, Edward VI, he ends up losing his own head.

  • these guys didn't bathe, but they sure as hell had some fancy clothes.

  • GOOD, the damn bastard!

  • I'm actually quite surprised that the Earl of Surrey stayed Earl after the whole Catherine fiasco. He is after all a Howard and the King showed no favour to the Boleyns after Anne. It was only a matter of time the Seymours would try to bump him off, knowing that Catherine had been so hatefully put to death.

  • Had some bad idea's,

iam sure he was a good guy a loyal man!

  • I Love my David!!!!

  • hey thats Stephen from Brave Heart!

  • He was totally in Harry Potter! OH YEAH. Not dissing The Tudors in anyway, I love HP and TT. :D <3

  • While I adore David O'Hara and feel he gave a terrific portrayal, Surrey was only 29 years old when he was excecuted. A younger actor may have given people a better idea of just how accomplished Surrey was for such a young man. Henry's paranoia and courtier's rumours were again all that were needed to put an end to someone who had much to offer, both as a soldier and as a poet.

  • In real life he was sentenced to hanging drawing and quartering but the sentence was never carried out, he was beheaded instead

  • Not happy to see David O'Hara sentenced to death!!! He is the reason I looked forward to watching The Tudors! He is super hot!!!

  • I really felt sorry for Surrey. Look at the expressions on his face! Great acting!

  • " The happy life be these, I find:—

    ...the quiet mind;

    The equal friend; no grudge, no strife;

    ...wisdom joined with simplicity;

The night discharged of all care"

  • I can't help it I like the arrogant bastard, he's right in what he says.

  • why didn't they at least commute his sentence to beheading, if the jury knew that he wasnt guilty?

  • @Snezhinka9 I'm not sure why the show said he was hung, drawn, and quartered. Historically, he was simply beheaded.

  • @magicalpj - I've read around a bit...and apparently he was sentenced to by hanged drawn and quatered but later Henry had mercy on him and simply had him beheaded. His father got off entirely because Henry died before the execution could be carried out.

  • @Snezhinka9 Weren't nobles beheaded though?

  • @AemiliaPaulla - well, as far as I know the punishment for high treason was hanged drawn and quartered...and it could happen to nobles too.

  • @Snezhinka9

Juries only determine guilt or innocence. Judges set the sentence.

  • @stonem001 Depends on the state.

  • I really wish that had not happened. and the manner in which he was to be killed was dreadful, it would have been so agonizing and disgusting- I cannot help but feel tearful for him.

  • He was actually a very prolific poet and is attributed with creating the sonnet form, I have read.

  • Oh I shed a few tears for Surrey here, He and his father rocked ;)

  • At least he handles it as a man should, with dignity.

  • @joshua4052007 Exactly!

  • Anyone know the name of the song that plays during his sentencing?

  • i thought this was the most powerful peice of telly i have ever watched i was willing howard to run at the jury and kill them all they sought his down fall at any cost

  • I think they only sentenced him to HD&Q to put the fear of God into him and to see what his reaction would be. They probably commuted his sentence to beheading later on since that's what happened to the Earl in real life, but they just didn't show it in the series.

The Earl was one of my fav characters in season 4, David O'Hara played him so well. I love all his fanboys cheering him on in court aswell.

  • Henry Howard was beheaded, but his father was let go because the King died the day before he was suppose to be beheaded.

  • it is interesting to me, that as the characters have been portrayed in this series, that jane Seymour was actually a very nice and tender soul....it seems to me now that her family is just as evil as the boleyn family...hard for me to believe that her brother is nasty like that.....

  • does anyone know the name of the poem that the earl recited at the end?

  • @melsoar The Means to Attain Happy Life by Henry Howard, 3rd Earl of Surrey. They altered the wording a bit for the show.

  • Why is he sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered. Sure he's nobility is he not? I thought they could only be beheaded?

  • @belledumonde07 nope, it was custom that trason was commuted to the more merciful beheading if you were a noble, but that was simply a gesture of respect that the king could give if he wanted too

  • I loved Surrey. I was like hurry up! Escape!!! Alas, it was not to be :-(

  • OMG he must feel terrible after that trial

  • Thank you Seymour for keeping it real....and shame on you Mary for alienating the Queen! She treated you with nothing less than love and respect. I would have loved to see her reaction when Gardiner was bounced.

  • He's great. The poem at the end is one that Brandon recites to him in the fourth show, interestingly enough...

  • he kicks ass. I love how directly he accuses these men judging him.

  • Can't stand the Semours. LOVED the earl, and his regal manner. He'll be missed. Thanks for posting this, by the way!

  • @ananmaya are you kidding? he was elitist and superior, i could not stand him. i cheered upon watching his downfall. although he is quite feisty here

  • @uglyduckling89 If you notice how people like the seymours and Boleyns keep on acting whenever they get into power, than you can see why he acted so elitest, furthermore unlike Charles Brandon he doesnt participate in the constant backstabbing that takes place at court, and most of the people shouting at the judges that the trial was a sham so he obviously wasnt that arrogant to commoners just those like cromwell and the seymours who got to their positions through backstabbing

  • @timenyart Yeah I've been getting that. I think that's why I like Brandon and Surrey. They're one of the same, Loyal only to the King and not to their personal likes or dislikes. I think Surrey harboured a hatred of the Seymours because they weren't of noble blood, but got there on merit of who the king married. Charles could've been disliked by him too on the same grounds but Surrey respected him because he was lifelong firends with the king. Shame he had to die to summarise.

  • @timenyart actually the supporters are mostly lords as a trial of a peer in england takes place in the House of Lords my bad, but im pretty sure plenty of commoners like him as he came from a long line of hardened military men who campaigned with their men, that kind of behavior usually inspires loyalty

  • :(

I liked him and I LOVE David O'Hara..
