One of the most heartbreaking scenes of the entire 4 season series,IMO.Henry is sitting on his butt at 8:18 trying to read with a looking glass, and you know that he can hear the uproar of the crowd nearby when Surrey was sentenced. I'd think that any king would want to be present and pronounce the verdict and sentence himself.
It's horrible how justice was all about what the King wanted, not about any procedure where there were boundaries and such. Henry VIII did a huge level of butchering that still amazes me in it's scope. Even the jurors didn't see anything wrong and the people of Norfolk were supportive of 'their' Earl.
@TheNuharoo Toward the end of his rule,it is said that he was very uninvolved in the affairs of his kingdom,as evidenced by his allowing the Bishop and his cronies to make decisions about who to interrogate and in the sentencing of such men as Surrey, who had served him well on the battlefield. The true record of history shows that Surrey was not executed in the manner that he was sentenced to be in "The Tudors",however.
Why does he look at Suffolk when he says it was a friendly foe who trapped him? I remember, later in the series, Suffolk himself blames Hertford for "hounding" Surrey to his death.
Am I right to say that he blames Suffolk as the person who betrayed him to the Seymour faction? It's just the way the earl looks at him and the way Charles hangs head when he looks towards him. What is the real history was Suffolk really involved in his imprisonment?
@JessicaLouiseMusic that was the Earl's father, the Duke of Norfolk, who was also Anne Boleyn's Uncle. Anne Boleyn's mother was Elizabeth Howard, the Duke of Norfolk's sister.
@igby55 "the happy life be these, the quiet mind, the equal friend, no grudge nor strife, wisdom joined with simplicity, the night discharged of all care."
@JessicaLouiseMusic - Richard Rich. The manipulator that turns up whenever someone is about to get executed. If you see Richard Rich, know that someone's about to be offed!
I know The Tudors gets a bad press becuase of its historical inacuracies but the last minutes of this scene are the most powerful I have ever scene in a historical drama.
David O' Hara is a terrific actor, the handshake he gives someone as he walks out of the courtroom admist the chaos was a really moving touch.
When I saw the scene between Catherine Parr and Mary Tudor I realised: I don't thinkg Mary wanted a mother. The way she acted to Henry's last 3 wives shows it a little
@Brianboro67 The Howards certainly went through a rough time during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. But the titles Duke of Norfolk and Earl of Arundel and Surrey (as well as the status of Premier Duke and Earl Marshall of England) were all restored to them. So today we have the 18th Duke of Norfolk and his heir, the Earl of Arundel & Surrey, all directly descended through the male line from this Henry Howard, and all have maintained intact their allegiance to the Catholic church.
I noticed two mistakes (not in this scene) in the 4 th series. Richie Rich used to be henchman of Cromwell and in favour of the Reformation, and in the last episodes he turns Catholic and aids Gardiner and Lady Mary. And David O'Hara says during the siege of Boulogne he was against this sort of warfare and longed for breaking lances as in the past, but in real life he was only 28 and could never have known much other ways of warfare.
Rich swapped sides like a tennis ball He’s been called the worst villain of the 16th century those who knew him said that he never did anything good in his life and that he was a most wretched creature he helped destroy both More and Fisher, he served then turned against Cromwell the Seymour brothers Cranmer and Gardiner personally torturing Gardiner as well as Anne Askew He was also a key player in putting Jane Gray on the throne only to betray her he really is on of history’s bastards
Knowing history the way I do now, it's ironic how smug Edward is at the moment, when during the reign of his own nephew, Edward VI, he ends up losing his own head.
I'm actually quite surprised that the Earl of Surrey stayed Earl after the whole Catherine fiasco. He is after all a Howard and the King showed no favour to the Boleyns after Anne. It was only a matter of time the Seymours would try to bump him off, knowing that Catherine had been so hatefully put to death.
While I adore David O'Hara and feel he gave a terrific portrayal, Surrey was only 29 years old when he was excecuted. A younger actor may have given people a better idea of just how accomplished Surrey was for such a young man. Henry's paranoia and courtier's rumours were again all that were needed to put an end to someone who had much to offer, both as a soldier and as a poet.
@magicalpj - I've read around a bit...and apparently he was sentenced to by hanged drawn and quatered but later Henry had mercy on him and simply had him beheaded. His father got off entirely because Henry died before the execution could be carried out.
I really wish that had not happened. and the manner in which he was to be killed was dreadful, it would have been so agonizing and disgusting- I cannot help but feel tearful for him.
@Rcarab4 Not sure of the song, but if you go to the composer's (Trevor Morris) website, you'll find that the soundtrack is due to be released very soon. Matter of fact, End of a Dynasty, a piece from this last season, plays upon entering.
i thought this was the most powerful peice of telly i have ever watched i was willing howard to run at the jury and kill them all they sought his down fall at any cost
I think they only sentenced him to HD&Q to put the fear of God into him and to see what his reaction would be. They probably commuted his sentence to beheading later on since that's what happened to the Earl in real life, but they just didn't show it in the series.
The Earl was one of my fav characters in season 4, David O'Hara played him so well. I love all his fanboys cheering him on in court aswell.
it is interesting to me, that as the characters have been portrayed in this series, that jane Seymour was actually a very nice and tender soul....it seems to me now that her family is just as evil as the boleyn family...hard for me to believe that her brother is nasty like that.....
@belledumonde07 nope, it was custom that trason was commuted to the more merciful beheading if you were a noble, but that was simply a gesture of respect that the king could give if he wanted too
Thank you Seymour for keeping it real....and shame on you Mary for alienating the Queen! She treated you with nothing less than love and respect. I would have loved to see her reaction when Gardiner was bounced.
@uglyduckling89 If you notice how people like the seymours and Boleyns keep on acting whenever they get into power, than you can see why he acted so elitest, furthermore unlike Charles Brandon he doesnt participate in the constant backstabbing that takes place at court, and most of the people shouting at the judges that the trial was a sham so he obviously wasnt that arrogant to commoners just those like cromwell and the seymours who got to their positions through backstabbing
@timenyart Yeah I've been getting that. I think that's why I like Brandon and Surrey. They're one of the same, Loyal only to the King and not to their personal likes or dislikes. I think Surrey harboured a hatred of the Seymours because they weren't of noble blood, but got there on merit of who the king married. Charles could've been disliked by him too on the same grounds but Surrey respected him because he was lifelong firends with the king. Shame he had to die to summarise.
@timenyart actually the supporters are mostly lords as a trial of a peer in england takes place in the House of Lords my bad, but im pretty sure plenty of commoners like him as he came from a long line of hardened military men who campaigned with their men, that kind of behavior usually inspires loyalty
