Spoke to the former world champion max euwe in the 70s (Im dutch) and he said that alekhine did lose the odd LONG game, but NEVER EVER lost a game of blitz and while playing blitz NEVER took longer than 5 seconds to make his move. (Wow!)
if grishchuk had taken the pawn instead of exchanging the rooks he could easily have draw-ed.. because whites king is too far and they cant stop blacks pawns only with one rook
@benacostian No, at that point carlsen takes a long time because he realises that it's a drawn position because the pawn on e4 prevents Qa8 (preventing the black king getting to g1/g2/h1) thus he plays Ke5 hoping for ...e4 and allowing Qa8 followed by Qe4 (or Qh1), but ...Kg2 would have drawn easily, either immediately or after Qxe1 (which is inevitable). It's interesting because K+7thRP v Q = draw is known by most 1500 players. It's bizarre that grischuk saves his KP instead of RP.
is very easy to grishuk draw this, when carlsen play 1. d7 grishuk shoud continue Rxd7 and the white rook can't sopport two pawns for example Kxd7 2. h3 Rxe4 h2 3.Rd1 Kg4 4.Rh1 Kg3 and draw...
Hello Magnus , you didnt beat the - WORLD - you beat - ONLY 3 GM - with over 100 elo less than you have. Against the WORLD with the normal PC-Hardware and Stockfish 1.8 - or better Rybka-4-Software at home you cant win. The WORLD knows that your BOXING-show was only a DECEPTION. You say in your clip : Can YOU beat me

@PraveenAtheray Yes, Magnus won. It's really pretty simple as the Q gets closer by checking continually, threatening to take the pawn, repeatedly forcing the K to the square in front of the pawn, and thereby gaining time to bring his K in for the mate. Even in blitz, you hardly have to think much to accomplish this.
@balleslyng yes and it is great becaue it's one video where I could follow the game the guy who's filming is doing a great job, I've seen a lot of vid where it's just impossible to see what is going on !
He refused an invitation. ICC isn't the best barometer for blitz anyway. Van Welly is a top 10 on ICC and couldn't crack the top 10 of a qualifier just to get into the actual championship.
1:28-1:32 he couldn't get that peon, it was on the other square...lol.Am I wrong ?

@HoNoMan15 It's "En passant" capture if I'm not wrong in terminology.

at 6:03 i think Black could have sac the rook & then Draw , am i correct ?

@MegaBirdView
I was thinking the same thing when i saw that position so I engine checked it and rybka agrees Rxd7 is the best move for black giving a draw.

grischuk was sooooooo close

It was amazing to see Carlsen march his King up the Queenside, sacrificing the a and b pawns. Did he know he was winning then?

I don't understand why the game ended? Did Magnus win? It didn't seem like it judging from his reaction, and it wasn't a stalemate or checkmate.

Grischuk can't avoid losing his pawn. After that, it's a matter of tecnique.

At 6: 02 black had a draw right before white played Rd6 ... If B gives his R for the d7 passer, it's a draw.
Great video and such a great game by these 2!

Very nice, but Magnus missed a simple mate at 5:00 after black's Qh5: 1. Qh8 (instead of Rb7) Kg6 2.Qxf6 Kh7 3. Rh8 mate.

At 5:44 Grischuk was certainly not lost. It might be a draw though.
Well that was the price for staying low on time for most of the endgame.
