Saw a great Gun Club tribute in Bighton England a few years ago. They played the whole set and really went for it! Good vocals too, a young Mexican guy I think. Wish they'd do some more it had real power!
We've collected Chris D.'s lyrics, poetry, stories, autobiographical notes and more in A MINUTE TO PRAY, A SECOND TO DIE. Preface by Byron Coley, Foreword by John Doe, Afterword by Lydia Lunch. Order the book via Amazon or New Texture dot com.
Yeah. Chis D. is still kickin´ and JLP (what a shame) is dead and even the Divine Horsemen wouldn´t drag him back. So sit back, close your eyes and enjoy the old spirit while you´re still here!
Yeah. Jeff is dead. Chris is still kickin´. And even the Divine Horsemen won´t drag JLP back. So shut the fuck up and enjoy the spirit of the old Gun Club you assholes. I´m sure Jeffrey would love this!
He may be an expert but doesn't have the vocalization. Not that JLP was classically trained, but he did have a unique style... I just don't think Chis D. nails it. It's very difficult to do. He certainly does a good job trying. I'd agree, "tribute" band, not reunion.
Listen, JLP is gone, and he was a genius, but Chris D. wrote two records (No Questions Asked/Minute To Pray) that are on-par with anything The Gun Club ever did. And he's the only vocalist alive who not only knows *exactly* how Jeffrey sang, but can actually replicate it.
This is the closest thing you can get to the original Gun Club without bringing JLP back from the dead. No one can sing Gun Club songs as well as Chris D. Period.
id say the first 4 flesh eaters records are just as good as if not better than the gun club. kind of. they are to the gun club what television was to the voidoids. plus, did u ever hear chris d's country records? top notch
@Aristotlekh Nothing against the guy, but he does not sound like JLP. Jeffrey Lee Pierce was the only the constant thing about the gun club, he WAS the gun club.
still sucks, why, I mean Ward made an incredible record, but does he even enjoy playing this music by a man he despised and speaks with such a lull about, and Terry Graham, drums on Fire of Love and Miami, I personally love, but he's a real bitch of a man
I hope beyond hope that this is a mere "tribute" show and NOT as stated a "reunion". This is a Gun Club song, but there the resemblence ends as far as I'm concerned. I'd rather see Chris D. performing Flesh Eaters stuff, though personally they never meant anything to me. Being from the UK the West Coast US postpunk that reached me was stuff like X and The Gun Club. And by that I mean Jeffrey Lee Pierce specifically, not Ward or Kid Congo. And I prefer Tito Larriva's production on FoL anyway.
it also doesn't matter if Chris D produced the first record. It is one of the greatest records of all time,it makes the VU's version of avante guarde-seem like choir music, but remember Rob's bass got lost in the mix, thankfully you can hear it on the Early Warning tracks. The guys from Blondie produced Miami, they did the same thing, and they're tribute to JLP is a real shame-like Quiet Riots trib to Randy.Lame O
that's kind of mean, Chris D is getting on, and he still puts an assload of energy into his singing. if you met him you'd know how fucking hard he's pushing it. singing like he did in the 80s takes a lot out of you. hell, even just singing a few songs takes a toll.
Chris D. does a righteous job here; no shit, nobody can replace Jeffrey Lee Pierce but this is a worthy tribute. Chris D. also performed this song with The Flesh Eaters in their recent reunion.
maybe the chris d vocal is better but i like the heart and jonesiness jlp put into this song. this musta been the second night. the first night featured none other than kid congo terry "black train daddy bag" graham and ward dotson all on the first time together on stage. i stole the set list. hee hee
you can't have a fucking gun club reunion when JLP is a ghost assholes.Ward and Terry you helped make that record great, but Jeffrey was the key to the kingdom-now all these years later, cash in-if you loved the music so much why'd you leave.
Sympathy.maybe you should re-read Go tell the mountain and notice how little mention there is of Ward and Terry then note their liner notes in Early Warning.FOL was lighning in a bottle, every member key
I remember buying these albums when they first came out.I felt like the only soul listening to this Band. I loved it! To see/hear this reunion is Great! :)
Wow! That is the one and only Chris D. from the Flesheaters on vocals. He is the best! This rocks better than the original! I wish I could have been at this show.
rocks better than the original what kind of a pussy are you!Jeffrey wrote those bad ass lyrics and belted them out in way that Chris D could never have come up with on his own asshole!
crypttonite, the Gun Club record that this song came from was produced by none other than Chris D. himself. Chris D. just did this gig to pay tribute to Jeffrey. In my opinion he is a better singer than Jeffrey. Your only comeback, calling me names, shows me that you don't have the brains to say something intelligent. You need your mouth washed out with soap. I bet that you don't talk like that to people's faces because you're scared. You do it here because you hide behind your computer.
I didn't call you names dumbass! This is an internet forum-if you would like to meet face to face, name the street-I'll wash your mouth out-with asphalt!Any dickless bitch like yourself who would deminish the Gun Club and Jeffrey Lee-you're not paying tribute, play his fucking records that's a tribute-
I already bet that he wouldn't-it's something that is beyond reason, interpersonal chemistry-he wouldn't have hated me for being convicted in my ideas.
I think of Jeffery in the present tense, and some of the most minute moments in music, that he made, make me shake my head and say"fucking Jeffery Lee" or GODDAMN!
so you speak for Jeffery..yr saying he would have hated me for having a mind of my own?
this convosation started with you opinion or idea, something you hold to be true, that this shitty performance is better is even better than the original recording on FOL,and this singer you say is better than JLP.
If Jeffey's scatterd ashes gathered in your face-I bet you'd sing a different tune,
not the JLP I know, you present him as someone who hated people with minds of their own, that he didn't have a mindof his own and that's why he doens'tmind if dipshits like yourself speak for him. It doesn't matter to me whether Jeffery wuold have liked me,inspiring hate is desireable too-I doubt he would put that much into it at all,Fire of Love and the acoustic stuff, changed my life,Ward and Terry's part is not interchangeable ,
vocally, lyrically Chris D is second rate, accept the fact! stylistically they are a cartoon,to me they sound like they are trying-I'm sure a lot never was is,consider em local heros,or the real shit-Gun Club had Jeffery Lee,that's just how it goes.
Certainly looks like Ward on gee-tar, might be Terry on skins, but the bass player is a ??? Vocals are weak, but then everything would be absent the Ranking Jeffrey Lea.
I know the singer's trying his best, but without Jeffrey Lee Pierce this is just shameful

alansready 4 years ago
also, Chris D was just as great a lyricist as jeffrey lee if not better.
and besides being their producer, he played his share of gigs with them in the 80s.
and further more, the flesh eaters and the gun club make for THE MOST AMAZING BACK TO BACK RECORD PLAYING YOU CAN HAVE.
chrissstopherG 4 years ago
why are you knocking the way the man sings?
he's not trying to rip Jeff off in the least.
and if you give the old flesh eaters records a listen, you'd realize chris d's voice is just as unique.

funny, jeffrey would've hated someone like you.
