  • what is the first sample played from

  • Infectious Grooves, " You ever heard the song the love you find is the love you will never find but is the love that is held within?" "Whip cream....rubb it all ova yo ba tay!"

  • infectious grooves - sarspipius ark intro dialogue!

  • @funktuall I have one problem with this. k-os is the 2nd best Canadian rapper of all time, the top honor goes to Shad (btw, you should do his 'Rose Garden' song on one of your vids).

  • "fuck bitches.. get money oh ha hah"

  • respect the roman numerals

  • lol You're hilarious. My boy and you would talk for years about music. He knows everything I just feed up on it. (Didn't click your page yet) but do you make music also??

  • Actually George and Bootsy thought they saw a UFO while driving in Ohio an that's why the Mothership Connection was started. I can't remember if it was George or Bootsy who said it in an interview but I do remember them saying it.

  • bill withers is a beast. the kissin my love intro is one of my favorite beats

  • Sara Bareilles got "love song" from that last one too

  • Erykah's interpretation of Can't Turn Me Away is so dope!

  • Saukrates is a great Canadian hip-hop artist (check out his track "Ay Ay Stutter"), and 2 of the 3 original members of Main Source were from Toronto! Not a ton of great hip-hop from Canada, but there's a few gems for sure. (I also like Moka Only.)

  • sweet T sampled that parliment beat too the song is on the smooth tip.

  • Can you please show the Beyonce Samples????? Like the Crazy in Love!!!!!

  • great video man, keep it up , im glad i subscribed to your channel

please visit my channel for true hiphop beats for real hiphop fans

sub if you like it and sub this man right here, cant beleive 4 people disliked , noobs

  • MOAR!

  • great videos man... keep it up!!

  • Sorry Funktuall but the greatest Cdn rapper is Maestro Fresh Wes. He got the drop on K-Os any day.

  • ahh, so who's the intro? btw, mad respect to you and your love for music!

  • TROY. TESTIFY, man, kanye HAS the Hip Hop producing ABILITY, but his fuckin attitude and cockiness. 8:10 BUDDY hahaha.

  • WOW. You are one mad cat. Fair play though.

  • spice-1 used mothership connection for young nigga, one of my favorite spice-1 joints

  • Absolutely love the Mothership Connection, an irresistable slice of funk and my personal favourite hip-hop sample.

  • The "if you hear any noise" chorus in Mothership Connection was also picked up by the female chorus in Kool & The Gang's "Ladies Night"... "if you hear any noise, it ain't the boys, it's ladies' night..."

The guitar riff in "Kissing My Love" by Bill Withers was also sampled in 1989 by Schoolly D, for the "Education Of A Black Man" track. If you don't know what I'm referring to, check out the whole "Am I Black Enough For You" album, or how to use samples with talent... Mythical!!!!

  • lmao!

  • You are one really big fan of music. :)

  • Yo ive got a DJ riz record that is like a massive medely of loads of samples mixed together on both sides , it includes that sample you play at start , WORD !!! SOME FUNNY SHIT !!!

  • hey dude ...

your videos cause much joy ...

you've probably heard it but ther is also a killer version of 'hit or miss' by Odetta ....

one of my personal favorite drum breaks and a killer funk tune ...

    peace from edinburgh, scotland

  • Hit or Miss by Bo Diddley also sounds like the drums (though slightly altered) were used for "Something Wicked" by 2Pac

Also Funk is you like K-Os, I really REALLY recommend Shad from London, Ontario he is like Fresh Prince/Will Smith + K-os + Common.. his stuff if really incredible.

I really suggest looking up "The Old Prince Still Lives At Home" great song (If you like the Fresh Prince intro)

Another GREAT Shad song is "I'll never understand" a poem with his mom (Rwanda survivor)

  • Sarah Slean I actually went to the high school (Dunbarton in Pickering) I went to. My older siblings were there at the same time, and my Art teacher there also dated her.

  • *Sarah Slean actually ...

  • do you realized you have singing abilities???

  • just 2 knw an artist from my country provided one of if not The gr8est intro in hip hop's history is a hell of suprise 2 me but a very pleasant 1..big ups funktuall..242 can u hear me!!!!

  • may not b the best but my fav rapper from Canada is Maestro Fresh Wes

  • the testify sample from kanye is also used on MURS's "I'm Innocent", hopefully you know who MURS is lol...

  • Yep. MURS rules the world!

  • MURS Makin' Underground Raw Shit

  • @kwkable11 Yeah!!!! Murs used that Innocent Til Proven Guilty track for the song 'I'm Innocent', off the MURS For President album.

  • Aw man, I dig your ish but really saying K-os is the greatest canadian rapper is an insult to all of Canada.

  • agreed, k-os is dope, but not the greatest canadian rapper ever...kardinal, choclair, saukrates etc...

  • This isn't how he normally is...lol

he's just messing around man! :)

  • I meant the intro....the rest is the real him haha

    Love it man!

  • Sweet T was the first to touch that Star Child Sample on her song, On the Smooth Tip.

  • my man, i thought i was the only one who caught that. sweet tee did use that sample from star child as well.

    u ain't lyin' about that.

  • Hell yeah, take me back to '88 why don't you? I was in high school when came out with that song. She rocked it!

  • The beginning of # 5 sounds like rulers back by Jay-z

  • supernatural

copied that style how schoolhouse rock

sings that song(dont know if the lyrics are

    also the same)

    but he does it well!

  • youre a school house rock fan, check out this chicago underground group called psychodrama. they have a song called "the circle that turns around upon itself"

  • Spice ! used this one to

  • I do this same thing for my friends. I make C.Ds. Like this, the samples of Hip Hop and Pop Songs.

  • This was one of the best!!

  • ur shit is ILLL!! watched all the vids up to this one. loving it out in cali man. the honey cone sample was used on MURS new album MURS 4 President, track title: I'm Innocent....of course.

    peace and love

  • You did a shout out to k-os again... dude you are the fucking man. I love your videos.

  • The melody from that Brick song "Fun" was used again....I can't remember or find the song that uses it....I can't even remember if it's a R&B song or a rap song but I am positive that melody has been used.....Funktual can you help me out with this one....It's killin' me

  • The Brick melody was used in these songs:

    Video by India.Arie

Put It In Your Mouth by Akinyele

  • I swear on everything I love it's been used elsewhere....Not the opening guitar loop but the actually melody part that you can hear at 0:57 and 1:19....I can't remember but it's out there somewhere!!!!

  • Sarah Slean is a great singer... I think the track was on an Apple commercial as well?

  • I can't believe the School House Rock sample! LOL! I remember that when I was about 6 or so.

  • This guy is obviously on something we haven't tried yet. LOL! BUT! He knwos what he's talking abourt and has put a lot of samples out there that were hard to find the names of!

Whatever you are smoking, sniffing, drinking, (or chewing) keep it up! You're great!!

  • thanks for the track names #1

  • thanx funktuall, I went too my fav. vintage place and picked up Sylvia Striplin.

  • funny white man, i like this guy. really hes got flavor for a white guy, keep it up!

  • what about a sublime episode? like , why does brad get credit fro i love my dog , when the song was written 15 yrs earlier by bad brains i love i-jah?im just sayin... funktuals lessons are as dope as ever REESPEK!

  • Check Out "I Love My Dog" by Cat Stevens

  • you should have did the troy beat after the intro sample that woulda been dope good fuckin job tho man

  • yo mad if u ever have a problem finding a sample to a song look on wikipedia and search up the song or album

  • eres bueno tiooo...

  • man that honey comb sample blew my mind....before you lock my love away!!

  • i lost madd respect for india arie right there

  • lol! she was paying homage

  • k-os best canadian rapper? i dont think so man..

  • let me riiide... !!! awesome

  • yeah i know..i like how he picks completely random songs to suprize you

  • i hate that song girls girls girls from jay z , and i still hate it

  • *****

  • Continued: Infact a lot of the samples that were used on all of these videos were done with either the EM-U SP12 or 1200 and the Ensoniq ASR10. Some beat makers live and die by these pieces of equipment. Then comes the MPC. Roland made one that was good for changing the pitch of the sample without changing the length of the sample. Roland changed the game with it. Its called the VP 9000. If you get the chance, buy it. You can step your sample game up. The fun of DITC is seeing if you can hide.

  • Ok, you broke me down with the Indie Arie joint. Now I really feal good about sampling. I first started with the SP1200 cause I was afraid of the ASR10. Imagin that. Well the SP's 10 seconds of sample time made me a guru. I had to use those measly 10 seconds to get the drums bass line, hook, and everything else. Well, I did it... I think I am a better beat maker because of it. Some of the other equipment makes you lazy cause you can just yolk the whole thing.

  • man your the shit!

  • please do an episode for only kanye west beats.....

  • And all along, I thought India Arie produced that

  • Sylvia Striplin had more than one jam dude - Give me Your Love used by Armand Van Helden feat Common - 'Full Moon' - Disco Hip House baby!

  • Television Deal? congrats brotha, that's the shit right there. represent as you have on youtube.

  • the intro sounds like chris rock lol

  • Comment removed

  • I'm glad DJ Funktall posts these videos, I mean there's only a few people I can have a conversation with about music that's in depth. I hope he gets a national t.v. deal! I try to talk music history and samples and stuff and people either can't keep up or they think I go too far with it,like learning isn't cool? BUT...If it's on t.v. with good presentation people will eat it up. I like how Funktuall gives a history lesson for the very few I don't know. Don't change your format.

  • Yo!!! The Mothership Connection sample was hot. Don't get me wrong it was most remembered for "Let Me Ride" but as a for real Hip Hopper, I remember it from Sweet Tee's "On the Smooth Tip".

  • It's great that you bring it all and can make youger ppl aware of what they missed back in the time of funk and disco and such. You really seem to know your stuff. TV? Yay, GO. That would be great. Keep it going.

  • don't know if anyone gave the answer yet, but the Sarsissipus (sp?) intro was *I think* from an Infectious Grooves album (weren't they an offshoot of Suicidal Tendencies?). It was the album that had a cover of Bowie's "Fame" on it

  • The Limited Edition Album the intro comes from is "Sarsippius' Ark" by The Infectious Grooves which has a cartoon cover of Sarsippius the funky gator floating in space. No Bowie in sight.

  • The Infectious Grooves are a funk metal band led by Suicidal Tendencies frontman Mike Muir. It also features former Excel guitarist Adam Siegel, ex-Suicidal Tendencies bassist Robert Trujillo (now in Metallica), and ex-Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins.

  • ....HipHop must be crack to this guy cuz hes on a good one...hahaha I like that!!!! ^_^

  • don't know if you've peeped this yet funk. looks dope...

    copyrightcriminals (dot) com

  • i love Common's Testify only bc of the sample :)

and now i know what it is!

    you are god, thank you

  • I look forward to these. Funktuall has no idea the joy he's bringing to alot of people. Keep it up Funktuall. You're appreciated.

  • Someone else mentioned it below, but the song "I'm Innocent" by Murs off Murs for President also flipped that sample and did some justice again to a timeless track. Funktual thanks for this!

  • The intro to #10 sounds like "One is the loneliest number" by Three Dog Night. It was a hit in 1969...long before those other two artists were even born.

  • Wow T.R.O.Y. is one of my fave songs ever and I never even had any idea where they sampled that song until just now!

  • You are so correct about track#1; how India.Arie redid the song again to make up for the horrible mistake Akinyele made out of it.

  • Yo man keep on funkin''

  • "Mothership connection" also used by Spice 1

  • One more thing if you ever watch the Boondocks (great show and SICK songs) in the episode "Riley Wuz Here" they drop Tom Scott - Today in arguably the best way possible (that references T.R.O.Y).

I literally spat out my cola when they did it and I figured you would get a kick out of it.

  • Cop chase to Today was soooo smooth. I loved that one lol

  • Funktuall....man your videos are amazing! I DJ myself and digging is my habit....my addiction. I love watching your videos...thank you for bringing so much great music back to light!!!!

  • is it the intro

    from warriors....???/

  • Love the Honey Cone, they also got a song called 'Want Ads' sampled by Mary Mary on a track called Heaven

  • OMG I get my thang in action VERB!!! That's what's happening. I love that one and "I got six" now that one is BUMPIN.

  • man i love your stuff

  • funktuall on the tube! must see tv

  • if u go to tv i will tune in all thee time

  • Thanks for the Canuck love on dropping the K-OS sample. Though I think you're being a little hasty calling K-OS best Canadian rapper ... we've got some serious MC talent up. Though Joyful Rebellion was a ridiculous album.

  • By all means, tell me who's better!

  • Check out (if you haven't already) K'naan, Classified, Buck 65 and Ghettosocks.

I'm obviously biased towards the East Coast since that's where I'm from but these are some sick Canadian hip hop talent.

I do love me some K-OS though.

  • I 1st heard Classified with boycott in the industry and loved it. Really smooth and clever rhymes. He should be bigger than he is.. most ppl never heard of him :(

  • Hands down, the best Canadian MC I've ever heard is Abdominal out of Toronto. His first complete album is freshly out, but he's been on a lot of DJ Format releases out of England. You'd dig it.

  • Go to my page and click on the video in the bottom right corner entitled, "The Best Hip Hop Dance Group?" I used it in the end of the routine. Let me know what you think. Good luck with the move. One

  • Yo Funk, it seems like Makadoutious is going to be on the up coming season of America's Got Talent. We audition on the 31st. Check it out when the season begins. One, Maka

  • Congratulations Maka! Jan 31st I'll be on the road moving but I'll try and get to a hotel for it!

  • The 31st is the taping date. I will let you know when it airs.

  • Oh ok, best of luck brother! Your shirt is in the mail Thursday! Thanks for being patient. Dying to know how you used that Lyrics Born so send me whatever you make!

  • if you go to TV dont forget about us tru-scrubs. down on da block who showed you MuCCHHHH LUV

  • funktuall over the past few months you have exposed me to an entire NEW life of amazing music. I thank you for this & your knowledge and energy!

    peace

  • word

  • Thanks or listening, the pleasure has been all mine!

  • WHAT!?! TV? just make sure we can see it over here in Cali man!

  • I thought the same thing. Chick Ballads.. :P

  • I did not know about the jay z sample...very nice!

  • ........and with intro i mean the beginning of this show from mr sarsipius the funky crocodile.hahahahahh

  • hahahahahahah The intro is from the 1st or second Infectious Grooves album.....this was a group from members of Suicidal Tendencies and Jane's Addiction.....absolutely wicked music.....

  • WINNER! The Limited Edition Album the intro comes from is Sarsippius' Ark by The Infectious Grooves!

  • TV!? Well what type of thing it wil be but if i hope you keep posting on youtube as im in the UK and i doubt it would make it over here.

  • i love the Akinyele and yoda track

  • great as usual :)

  • Top stuff as always mate!

    All the best!

  • 5 stars as always... I got a question thats been bugging me, Cee lo and timbalands song "i´ll be around" what sample is used in that song? btw what happend to your facebook?

  • You're freaking awesome... I love these samples, every time you manage to come up with something that's right in my wheelhouse. Great stuff!

  • When you mentioned School House Rock I was almost certain that you were gonna spin the De La Soul sample, "Three Is A Magic Number". Moby did a decent cover of Verb on the SHR tribute album. Speaking of Moby, he was at the NAMM Show today doing a demo on the (cd) turntables. Lots of amazing shit for dj's and sample junkies at the NAMM Show btw.

  • The last track is very derivative of Randy Newman's hit from 1977 "Short People". Check it out..

  • Who doesn't know "Short People"? You are definitely right though!

  • You'd be surprised! Not all your viewers are fossils like us brother.

  • this is one of his best one's yet

  • You're going on TV? ohhhh shit I'm setting up my tivo for this!!

  • what i find amazing about this guy is that the concept isnt really all that interesting to me, and most people would just look like an idiot doing this. but somehow funktuall pulls it off. id probably watch this guy make toast.

  • Another Banger Man... That School House Rock is Bananas!!!

  • wOW, kANYE didnt have to do anything to that beat, But it still was amazing

  • Good to hear you're going to be on TV. Everyone will love your vibe and lessons!

  • yeah!!!!

  • Sylvia Striplin you cant turn me away

  • Thanks for another vid man.

  • You surely have the charisma and energy for TV. Some great choices in this set. Pete Rock would play some dope intros and interludes, that would leave you thirsty!!!!! great work. peace

  • I wish I had the energy you have.

  • If the rumors are true, Congrats Funktual! The Sylvia Striplin sample was also used by the Backstreet Boys for their early song If You Stay.

  • Thanks for putting a smile on my face after a down day.

  • t.v wow i hope see that, that would be hot

  • Funktuall's Top 10 on BBC?

  • 9th wonder also sampled #5 for Murs I'm Innocent

  • Umm, the Native Tongue Decision Version is the remix that had Queen La and Monie on it. The one you are talking about is the original, if i remember correctly.

  • DAMN!! THIS WAS DOPE!!

  • Damn was that your voice at the start?

And as always thanks for brightening my day with them funky samples.

  • ha that's what I thought too at first

  • god damn @ that common shit...kanye chopped up the first like what 20 seconds of the song..classic

  • lmao fucking crazy
