@funktuall I have one problem with this. k-os is the 2nd best Canadian rapper of all time, the top honor goes to Shad (btw, you should do his 'Rose Garden' song on one of your vids).
lol You're hilarious. My boy and you would talk for years about music. He knows everything I just feed up on it. (Didn't click your page yet) but do you make music also??
Actually George and Bootsy thought they saw a UFO while driving in Ohio an that's why the Mothership Connection was started. I can't remember if it was George or Bootsy who said it in an interview but I do remember them saying it.
Saukrates is a great Canadian hip-hop artist (check out his track "Ay Ay Stutter"), and 2 of the 3 original members of Main Source were from Toronto! Not a ton of great hip-hop from Canada, but there's a few gems for sure. (I also like Moka Only.)
The "if you hear any noise" chorus in Mothership Connection was also picked up by the female chorus in Kool & The Gang's "Ladies Night"... "if you hear any noise, it ain't the boys, it's ladies' night..."
The guitar riff in "Kissing My Love" by Bill Withers was also sampled in 1989 by Schoolly D, for the "Education Of A Black Man" track. If you don't know what I'm referring to, check out the whole "Am I Black Enough For You" album, or how to use samples with talent... Mythical!!!!
Yo ive got a DJ riz record that is like a massive medely of loads of samples mixed together on both sides , it includes that sample you play at start , WORD !!! SOME FUNNY SHIT !!!
Hit or Miss by Bo Diddley also sounds like the drums (though slightly altered) were used for "Something Wicked" by 2Pac
Also Funk is you like K-Os, I really REALLY recommend Shad from London, Ontario he is like Fresh Prince/Will Smith + K-os + Common.. his stuff if really incredible.
I really suggest looking up "The Old Prince Still Lives At Home" great song (If you like the Fresh Prince intro)
Another GREAT Shad song is "I'll never understand" a poem with his mom (Rwanda survivor)
Sarah Slean I actually went to the high school (Dunbarton in Pickering) I went to. My older siblings were there at the same time, and my Art teacher there also dated her.

Continued: Infact a lot of the samples that were used on all of these videos were done with either the EM-U SP12 or 1200 and the Ensoniq ASR10. Some beat makers live and die by these pieces of equipment. Then comes the MPC. Roland made one that was good for changing the pitch of the sample without changing the length of the sample. Roland changed the game with it. Its called the VP 9000. If you get the chance, buy it. You can step your sample game up. The fun of DITC is seeing if you can hide.
Ok, you broke me down with the Indie Arie joint. Now I really feal good about sampling. I first started with the SP1200 cause I was afraid of the ASR10. Imagin that. Well the SP's 10 seconds of sample time made me a guru. I had to use those measly 10 seconds to get the drums bass line, hook, and everything else. Well, I did it... I think I am a better beat maker because of it. Some of the other equipment makes you lazy cause you can just yolk the whole thing.
I'm glad DJ Funktall posts these videos, I mean there's only a few people I can have a conversation with about music that's in depth. I hope he gets a national t.v. deal! I try to talk music history and samples and stuff and people either can't keep up or they think I go too far with it,like learning isn't cool? BUT...If it's on t.v. with good presentation people will eat it up. I like how Funktuall gives a history lesson for the very few I don't know. Don't change your format.
Yo!!! The Mothership Connection sample was hot. Don't get me wrong it was most remembered for "Let Me Ride" but as a for real Hip Hopper, I remember it from Sweet Tee's "On the Smooth Tip".
It's great that you bring it all and can make youger ppl aware of what they missed back in the time of funk and disco and such. You really seem to know your stuff. TV? Yay, GO. That would be great. Keep it going.
don't know if anyone gave the answer yet, but the Sarsissipus (sp?) intro was *I think* from an Infectious Grooves album (weren't they an offshoot of Suicidal Tendencies?). It was the album that had a cover of Bowie's "Fame" on it
The Limited Edition Album the intro comes from is "Sarsippius' Ark" by The Infectious Grooves which has a cartoon cover of Sarsippius the funky gator floating in space. No Bowie in sight.
The Infectious Grooves are a funk metal band led by Suicidal Tendencies frontman Mike Muir. It also features former Excel guitarist Adam Siegel, ex-Suicidal Tendencies bassist Robert Trujillo (now in Metallica), and ex-Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins.
Someone else mentioned it below, but the song "I'm Innocent" by Murs off Murs for President also flipped that sample and did some justice again to a timeless track. Funktual thanks for this!
The intro to #10 sounds like "One is the loneliest number" by Three Dog Night. It was a hit in 1969...long before those other two artists were even born.
One more thing if you ever watch the Boondocks (great show and SICK songs) in the episode "Riley Wuz Here" they drop Tom Scott - Today in arguably the best way possible (that references T.R.O.Y).

hahahahahahah The intro is from the 1st or second Infectious Grooves album.....this was a group from members of Suicidal Tendencies and Jane's Addiction.....absolutely wicked music.....
5 stars as always... I got a question thats been bugging me, Cee lo and timbalands song "i´ll be around" what sample is used in that song? btw what happend to your facebook?
When you mentioned School House Rock I was almost certain that you were gonna spin the De La Soul sample, "Three Is A Magic Number". Moby did a decent cover of Verb on the SHR tribute album. Speaking of Moby, he was at the NAMM Show today doing a demo on the (cd) turntables. Lots of amazing shit for dj's and sample junkies at the NAMM Show btw.
what i find amazing about this guy is that the concept isnt really all that interesting to me, and most people would just look like an idiot doing this. but somehow funktuall pulls it off. id probably watch this guy make toast.
You surely have the charisma and energy for TV. Some great choices in this set. Pete Rock would play some dope intros and interludes, that would leave you thirsty!!!!! great work. peace
Umm, the Native Tongue Decision Version is the remix that had Queen La and Monie on it. The one you are talking about is the original, if i remember correctly.
what is the first sample played from

You're freaking awesome... I love these samples, every time you manage to come up with something that's right in my wheelhouse. Great stuff!

The last track is very derivative of Randy Newman's hit from 1977 "Short People". Check it out..
shawn0612 3 years ago
Who doesn't know "Short People"? You are definitely right though!

You'd be surprised! Not all your viewers are fossils like us brother.

what i find amazing about this guy is that the concept isnt really all that interesting to me, and most people would just look like an idiot doing this. but somehow funktuall pulls it off. id probably watch this guy make toast.

You surely have the charisma and energy for TV. Some great choices in this set. Pete Rock would play some dope intros and interludes, that would leave you thirsty!!!!! great work. peace

I wish I had the energy you have.

If the rumors are true, Congrats Funktual! The Sylvia Striplin sample was also used by the Backstreet Boys for their early song If You Stay.

Umm, the Native Tongue Decision Version is the remix that had Queen La and Monie on it. The one you are talking about is the original, if i remember correctly.
