  • LUV Scrimshaw!!!!

  • woo now thats a call. who is that. and the 4 horse came on to be 4th. another 10 yards he wins it. if you run 4th in the ken derby. how much do you get.

  • I met him today. He was kinda bratty, he nipped at my friend.

  • wrong, it was $20,000, each of the four man contributed $5000. Thats what made this horse special.

  • No, Funny Cide was bought for 75,000. The original group form Sackets Harbour did put in 5000 each, but Funny Cide did not come till later. They had gone through about 4 horses by then. They had a good stakes horse at one point that they lost in a claiming race. With the 65,000 they got for that horse, Barclay Tagg recommended they buy Funny Cide. There were 10 partners involved with Funny Cide.

  • excuse me it was $75.000 dollars.

  • A 40.000 Dollars horse,and a non wanted addit jockey JOSE SANTOS.(FROM CHILE)

    GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS.

    DOES'NT HIM??

    VIVA CHILE!!!!

  • I saw Funny Cide on Derby day this year at the KY Horse Park. I gotta say, while Cigar and the other hall of champs residents totally ignored my mother and I, Funny Cide came right up to us and was super friendly, what a cutie and it's amazing how I saw the horse that had this wonderful run within 2 feet of me!!!

  • I think Cigar is in denile, he still thinks he's a stallion! But Funny Cide was the only horse who came up to me and my mom too! I liked him sense that day and always will, because he wasn't one of those stuck up TB's!

  • Such a great legend without a doubt. You gotta love the gutsy gelding. :)

April 23 is his 9th birthday, which is the day I'm writting this comment.

  • I miss Funny kisses and hugs!!!

  • What a Day!!! First NY bred to win the Derby and My son was born, also a NY bred..hehe

  • Funny Cide did switch leads at the top of the strech, he just switched back to his wrong lead at the 1/8 pole.

  • Funny Cide ran a monstrous race even though he never switched leads in the stretch

  • Its a shame that Big Brown didn't win this year... my personal favorite was Smarty Jones but I just got the opportunity to read-up on Funny Cide and its a real heartbreaker, but people were still cheering for him after the run of the Belmont.

  • Yeah, me too. I try to stay detached from the horses I watch but Funny Cide grabbed me and didn't let go. I'd have loved nothing more than for him to have rolled in the Belmont.

  • Gosh I love that horse.

  • What do Eight Belles and Barbaro have to do with the Belmont? Neither of those horses even made it that far (sadly).

Those two examples are completely baseless.

  • i have a funny feeling about Big Brown winning to but i mean theres always the wet deep muddy tracks like what happened to Funny Cide and then like what happened to Smarty misjudging the distance and then what happened to Eight Belles and Barbaro breaking down

  • I think Big Brown will win the Triple Crown this year. I just have a funny feeling about it.

  • I really hope he does; his left front hoof cracked this morning.

  • yeah i know but that isn't going to stop him. he is just awesome!!!

  • jose santos's\ son was in my class in 4th grade. im dead serious.

  • Too bad he's a gelding...

  • maybe that's the way it should be...to me he was a one of a kind horse and a one of a kind story about a bunch of guys who came on a school bus to here with a horse they thought had a chance, and you know what? They made the most of it.

  • 1:35 mile and he was one length off, too keep rolling through the wire...that was a top notch Derby win. You don't see that

  • Say whatever you want about Funny Cide...he was FAST...he could turn on the afterburners at the top of the stretch in a 1 1/ mile race. That is talent..

  • Funny Cide might not have been as talented as Empire Maker. But I'll tell you one thing you cannot say he didn't have guts,he was very brave. The Preakness was even more impressive, he looked like he had a rocket on his back in that race. He won't go down as a great racehorse, but he was real good one.

  • If it wasn't for a bad foot, Empire Maker would have won easily!

  • Empire Maker was a beast; I'll give him that. I'd love to see a match race between Funny Cide and Empire Maker. I adore both of those ponies. XD

  • the problem is funny cide peaked in the first two triple crown races and did nothing after that, save the Jokey club gold cup. Empire maker would destroy him in a match race as seen in the belmont.

  • speed controls a match race. empire maker has no early speed.

  • Relatively few remember the Belmont winners, especially if they are whisked away to the breeding shed. Everyone remembers the Derby winners, and people never forget a horse with a story like Funny Cide's. He went on to have a long and honorable career and was a wonderful ambassador for the sport. Game, set, and match to the "gutsy gelding."

  • theres a road in saratoga Ny called funny cide street

  • Viva Chile mierda...!!!

  • jose santo is te best jinete de la historia

    chileno tenia que ser po!!!!

  • For us upstate NYers, this was the most exciting day in racing for us. Funny Cide was adored by us and when he lost the Belmont, we were crying alright (he was on the rail in a puddle), but got over it. A wonderful, charismatic horse who gave joy to many and ended on a high note!!! Yeah Funny we will love ya always.

  • amen to that...being from Saratoga...it was insane.

we will always love you funny cide!

  • this was a very special derby, all of the horses in this derby had one thing in common, they all carried native dancer blood, congratulation to Funny Cide.

  • i have to agree with bigbird94,as a lifelong saratoga resident i was all for funny cide, but the guys from sackatoga stables were inexperienced and greedy, and had no clue what to do with a horse of this caliber, and also you will almost never see any distorted humor offspring give up in the heat of battle, thanks for the video cf1970.

  • You're welcome. Thanks for watching.

  • Enjoy retirement, Funny, you earned it. True, EM may have been better, but woulda shoulda coulda doesn't count for much. Results do, and FC was a dual classic winner, and a longtime fan favorite and EM was another good 3YO who promised more than he delivered and then faded from memory.

  • What a horse. Sure will miss him but he'll make a great pony. Love ya Funny!

  • Loved Funny Cide but his is the story of people being thrust into the spotlight and the horse suffers through some horrible decisions of which races he should have run in. Piss poor management cost us a fantastic career. If anyone can get footage of his race at belmont in the suburban handicap with peace rules and newfoundland you'll see a horse with tremendous heart being "rated" for a mile in a mile and a quarter race. Santos damn near killed him and it's a wonder he ran on so gamely .

  • The 2004 Suburban footage is on youtube via user "partymanners". What a great race that was. Gutsy Funny Cide nearly pulled it off.

    Take care.

  • José Santos es el mejor Jockey de la historia...

  • I remember this race, my dad and me won over one thousand dollars that day. That was a big day in the family. Too bad he came just short of the Triple Crown.

  • If i was the track announcer, I would say, "They're in the gate. And They're off in the Kidsongs Television Show Derby!"

  • People forget that Empire Maker had skipped a race here in the Triple crown, he was coming into the last race COMPLETELY rested, add in the wet muddy track and the worst place to be was down on the rail where the mud was the thickest, right where EM pushed Funny Cide into going. I think once a horse runs in the Derby they shouldn't be allowed to skip a race, if they have a minor injury then they should be scratched from the final race.

  • I had the trifecta this day, I really like Funny Cide. I think its fair to say Empire Maker was the better horse (as the Belmont showed), but that bruised hoof really hurt his Derby performance. On the other hand, it sure was great to see the "gutsy gelding" hit the wire in front.

  • Congrats. I like FC too. He was very gutsy, but I tend to agree, EM was the better horse based on sheer ability. His bruised hoof likely did hurt his Derby run. Yep, FC winning and having that shot at the TC made for great theatre for sure. We need more of that in the sport, and right now! 2007 is shaping up to be historic with Discreet Cat and Invasor. Let's hope they are pitted against each other a lot! Thank for stopping by. Take care.

  • EM may have been better but the Belmont was his last win in his career.

  • its like the daytona 500, but with horses

  • That is a terrific comment! Hilarious when one thinks about it. I totally agree. Lots of speed, entries, and not a lot of room to manoeuver. Thanks for posting. Take care.

  • I made some nice money on this race. 100 across on Funny Cide. I wish the video showed him before he went into the gate, his ears were pricked and he was on his toes. He just wanted to run that day. Great race. Its unforunate that he tailed off considerably later in his carrer. But he was still a great champion. Great video. Thanks

  • I agree. I really liked Funny Cide. He was such a game horse that he endeared himself to so many. Thanks for the tale of his eagerness to go that day. It is sad the he tailed off like he did. What a career he had though. A worthy champion indeed. Take care.
