Proctor's speech in the actual play was way better...I mean his short speech of Danforth and him will burn together in H3ll. That part actually had me tearing up.
Oh I did enjoy thundering out the court scene when I played Proctor in Higher English in 5th year, my teacher thought I was so amazing she felt the need to take me out of a class in 6th year to show her 5th years how it's done :)
@DoomFire13 No like the childrens game, you know where theres like a group of 12 people and 2 are mafia the rest are towns people. Nobody knows who is who and the goal is to lynch all mafia during the day, but during the night mafia can kill one person.
I have to say seeing him in the water staring out like that is a little bit freaky I am almost waiting for him to do something evil like watch the clouds grow dark behind him or something
The reason why John Proctor said "God Is Dead" is because right he was getting tired of all the lies that those girls kept saying until the truth came out and then he said God is Dead. He didnt really mean it he was really angry that the wrong words came out so he had to say it. He couldnt confess because what he says is true one person cannot take your name in life. in other words no one can take your idendity in life so after he said all of that he was taken to be hanged i felt bad at the end.
It would have been so easy for someone to confuse it with Nietzche's phrase "God is dead, and we have killed Him," which had more atheistic undertones.
NO.Thats foolish.Killing people who have done nothing is wrong."God is dead'' isnt a word its a phrase.
Listen to him-You are pulling heaven down and raising up a whore-I say God is dead!Do you even know what your talking about?Ill bet you would have watched those people die for that ''sin''.
When John Proctor makes his declaration of "God's Death", he means the people have killed the image of the real God and made up their own when he sees that the people of the village and the court have are willing to believe the testimonies of Abigail and the girls as opposed to the adults who have faithfully committed themselves to the Christian doctrine. In another part of the movie, they cheered as the innocent were wrongfully hanged (I wanted to cry at that part, with each cheer was a tear).
@JohnBaptist702 We're writing a coursework on Proctor for English. Our teacher showed us the film and it got to the stage where the girls were crying during Elizabeths false confession and everytime Abigail came into site people were genuinely angry! I love this play, and I believe the film does a really good job of it
At first, Reverend Hale tried to reason with the court, but because Mary Warren was scared at the last minute, she betrayed the truth causing John to become the object of accusations. The Witch Trials has destroyed the Puritan people, since they all were only interested in killing Witches in their town instead of staying faithful to Christian doctrine. So John knowing all this screamed with pure anger and frustration, "I say GOD IS DEAD!!!"
When John Proctor states "God is Dead," he means that the Puritans have raised up their own god and killed the image of the true God based on the fact that they did not thoroughly investigate the situation with the girls. The Puritans decided to believe in the testimonies of Abigail and the girls as opposed to the adults who have faithfully devoted themselves to the Christian doctrine, causing them to die unjustly.
@NickTheGreat300 you can't really blame her. those girls were getting everyone hanged, only a matter of time before she would be next. ofcourse everyone can judge her and say crap like "she should've been brave" "what a coward wench" we live in a different time. we dont know how it was to be brought up in those times. many people would be hanged or jailed for the sins they commit today.
had to watch this in class, and when i seen this part i was thinking "yes...Yes finally someone said it" just type in Carnivore and God is Dead and you will see how that song relates perfectly to those Puritan fucks, who dont even follow there religion correctly.
@iTemperance Hey sorry, that was my brother, he got on my profile without me knowing =/ But since I'm here I'll go ahead and chime in.
I don't understand why you would say his comment was irrelevant. What he said about the song God is Dead relates to this situation and the Christians dogma perfectly. Would you like to explain why it doesn't relate or just leave it at "your an idiot" just like every other Youtuber's mentality? Not to mention the mentality of these Christian bigots in the video.
@DeltaSigChi4 Oh please, inform me where in the United States people are still hung as witches!! I'm truly dying to know! Of course, there are still religious fanatics in America as there will always be in every country on Earth. But unlike parts of the Middle East and Africa, we now have laws to hold back the tide. I may detest Christian fundamentalists, but as far as I know, on the whole, they aren't very motivated to kill those who disagree with them. But I'm always ready to be corrected!!
@plutogirllovekj Actually, the onus is on you to prove that "people are still hung as witches" since it was your backwards/more than likely untraveled ass that claimed that "(t)his kind of religious fanaticism still rules the day in much of the Middle East and Africa". If Christians aren't motivated to kill those that disagree with them, do me the favour of explaining why "god" advised President G.W. Bush to illegally invade Irak, where more than ONE MILLION Iraqis are dead because of it.
@DeltaSigChi4 You know nothing about me, I was born in the West Indies, I've lived in Belgium. As an immigrant, I would like to think that I have a very objective view of America. But if it makes you feel good to equate religious fanaticism in the United States with religious fanaticism in other parts of the world, go ahead. I sense that you're anti-american, so it really would be fruitless trying to get you to see reason.
@plutogirllovekj Right. I'm "anti-american", but just happened to serve honourably for the United States of America's Armed Services. I just happened to fight in two foreign-soil shooting wars. Let's get to the crux of the matter: I retorted to your ASSININE [purposeful sic] comment regarding so-called fanaticism and you have yet to offer a single respectable explanation of your point(s). Christian funadamentalists aren't motivated to kill, they just enjoy waging war everywhere. *rolleyes*
@DeltaSigChi4 There was nothing asinine about my comment and serving in the U.S. military doesn't preclude one from being anti-american, just ask the shooter at Fort Hood! One can be a part of a community or society and still hate it! Go ask any woman sentenced to stoning, or any gay man sentenced to be hung, if they would like the opportunity to come to America!! To equate the religious environment of a democracy like the U.S. to theocracies in the Middle East or Africa, now that's asinine!!
@plutogirllovekj Nice, Take ONE lone e.g. out of MILLIONS who serve/served and you have yourself the weakest empirical evidence I have ever laid my eyes on in my entire life. That is a feat, let me tell you. How many woman sentenced to stoning equate to the number of innocent Iraqis and Pashtuns that we have massacred because of the crusade to take Christian democracy to the Middle East and Central Asia? Have ONE MILLION women been stoned? Moreover, The Fellowship and Uganda. That is all.
@DeltaSigChi4 Christian democracy? really? Well, I am home alone and bored, but that's my cue to end this fruitless conversation!! I am not some right-wing nut, I despise religious fanatics, and that was all my original comment was meant to convey, you jumped on it because you obviously have bitter feeling towards the American religious right, fine. But don't expect others to take you seriously, by the way, I wonder if the Turks or Japanese consider their governments Christian democracies!?
@plutogirllovekj The signal to send this pointless endeavor is your absolute avoidence of the simple fact that you have yet to provide a single iota of empirical evidence showing that "(t)his kind of religious fanaticism still rules the day in much of the Middle East and Africa!!". That you cannot comprehend that George W. Bush, U.S. President, HIMSELF stated that Christianity (e.g. conversation with his nonexistent god) helped decide to invade Irak, where ONE MILLION perished. That is all
@DeltaSigChi4 your pretty much an idiot who is trying to sound educated by typing in such a correct format, when really your making ridiculous arguments and overall acting like a prick. Your you tube account should be deleted for starting unnecessary arguments.
@speedster124 you're* ; and superb points you're bringing up. The debate is over. Postscript. And my account should be deleted from further usage for typing in "a correct fashion" and trying to sound educated.
@DeltaSigChi4 Actually, I believe his point was that he despises religious fanatics. Two people will say god declared war. Fanatics, and people who don't want to shoulder blame. So I suppose you just proved his point, that fanatics generally aren't good people?
@666makes1happydevil Yes, as an atheist, I am definitely a religious fanatic. In fact, I think you might have won the debate with more empirical evidence than (S)peedster124 in even less characters than him. Impressive.
@DeltaSigChi4 It's clear to me that your intention is to put forth the war in Iraq as proof of American religious fundamentalism. You have obviously allowed your anti-war opinion, which I ironically share, to cloud your reason.
