The reason why John Proctor said "God Is Dead" is because right he was getting tired of all the lies that those girls kept saying until the truth came out and then he said God is Dead. He didnt really mean it he was really angry that the wrong words came out so he had to say it. He couldnt confess because what he says is true one person cannot take your name in life. in other words no one can take your idendity in life so after he said all of that he was taken to be hanged i felt bad at the end.

When John Proctor makes his declaration of "God's Death", he means the people have killed the image of the real God and made up their own when he sees that the people of the village and the court have are willing to believe the testimonies of Abigail and the girls as opposed to the adults who have faithfully committed themselves to the Christian doctrine. In another part of the movie, they cheered as the innocent were wrongfully hanged (I wanted to cry at that part, with each cheer was a tear).

At first, Reverend Hale tried to reason with the court, but because Mary Warren was scared at the last minute, she betrayed the truth causing John to become the object of accusations. The Witch Trials has destroyed the Puritan people, since they all were only interested in killing Witches in their town instead of staying faithful to Christian doctrine. So John knowing all this screamed with pure anger and frustration, "I say GOD IS DEAD!!!"
