Well, there certainly is a powerful market for realistic vampires such as Mr. Barlow in the original Salem's Lot; because that's what people want to see. But the current state of affairs in Hollywood won't allow for it. Definitely worth the 3 hours although you will still miss some bits like with every adaptation .

i don think Stephenie Meyer intened to screw up vampire lore. she had an idea and wrote a book. simple as that. I totally agree. I was 5 when the original Salem's Lot came out, and was in my late teens when I finally read the book and Vampires were the only things that ever scared the shit out of me. Stephanie Meyer and others like her have totally ruined that. (Kind of glad from what people are saying that i haven't seen the remake)

This is a very underrated remake, in my opinion. It can't touch the classic original, of course, but it's still a pretty creepy adaptation of King's novel and shows us the classic bloodsucking variety of vampires as the vicious, evil creatures of the dark that they are.

Not a remake but a re-adaptation like PJ's Lord of the Rings movies which are more faithful to Tolkein's novels than Bakshi's. Not all vampires suck blood you know, there are some that suck energy or youth or souls instead like the Asian vampires do.

Stephanie Meyers is smart enough to exploit the vampire theme to appeal to women that want to read about romance, however unrealistic it is. Well, i think there is nothing wrong with vampires beeing beautiful or similar to humans. Thats because i think vampires should reflect the dark side of the human desires. For example, in my opinion it is possible for a vampire to "love", but it would be the dark counterpart of true love, possesive, ruthless, egoistic, destructive and so on.

While one could argue that the "Dracula"-type vampire story has become cliche, I've never been able to buy into the whole idea of vampires as lead characters like that. The 1979 version was ridiculous, Ben looked NOTHING like how he's described in the book, and the effects look terrible. Maybe they were good then, but it definately needed an update. This vampire movie remake is better than the 1979 one, and FAR, FAR better than the Twilight sissie vampires. Hauer's portrayal owns the Twilight boy's any time and is quite better than Reggie Nalder's... the 1979 Barlow was so ugly it sort of didn't scare me anymore... too hideous to scare me. However I realize this is just my viewpoint and I won't complain about other opinions, i.e. that Nalder was the best Barlow or something.
