John Lennon and Paul McCartney wished they had written this song....but if they had it would have been Paul's, the melody is almost overwhelmingly beautiful.
@rcarpenter1963 You're right, though I personally prefer John, this is reminiscent of those haunting yet catchy, powerfully melodic Paul compositions.
Is there a vid somewhere/anywhere of The Kinks performing "End of the Season"? If so then somebody/anybody please upload it soon - that IMO was also a classic song and my personal favorite. Thank you :)
Ray and Dave Davies are the bees knees! They so love what they do and it shows. I adore their 'far out' clothes in this clip and I love how Dave loses the glasses half way through the song. The Kinks are legends.
songs like that song from charlie and the chocolate factory when those squirrels throw that b*itchy rich girl down the furnace. Of course that song sucked and this is beautiful.
Waterloo Sunset. Terence Stamp, Julie Christie. The essence of London circa '67. The Kinks, Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Move, Scott Walker. It was THE place to be with THEIR music. And if you could get to San Fransisco that summer, you might as well say you had a very full life.
it must have something to do with the setting sun of Napoleonic white supremacy and the endless struggle to this day against the after the end of the world planet of the monkeys dystopia
Ah, the wonderful amazing Ray Davies and The Kinks. Just the best. When you look at the quality songs the Kinks produced you just have to be in awe of this group. Phenomenal! Waterloo Sunset.....just let it pour over you. The Jimi Hendrix Experience's The Wind Cries Mary has the same effect. Truly wonderful musicians came from this time.
Excellente` !!!! This is such a fantastic song and now to see this superb video with it makes it all that much better. Thanx for the upload. I appreciate the time and effort you put into your channel. !! Keep it up ! Bummer how it ends tho. [ I know, don't dwell on the negative. hahahaha !!! ] Peace Up ! ♥
I remember as a little child in my shack in Mississippi eating catfish and listening to The Kinks on Shin-dig, one of the greatest RnR bands in the world.
Thank you 60spopgold for posting this. The film is amazingly clear,as if it were just yesterday when this was recorded. Was it just yesterday when we all first heard this song? It is timeless.
Anyone in the music industry will tell you the golden era was the 60's.The legacy was so rich it filtered into the70's, and 80's.Then we were blessed with only the ocassional gem. In any month of the 60's or 70's, hall of famers dominated the charts in succession, selling millions of records in weeks. The well was so deep, theres nothing left. Feel free to use this in class, kids, I guarantee you'll get an A
@shadyalan1-I'd say one of the best, but not a categorical "best". There are songs I would rather listen to on "Something Else by the Kinks", like "Harry Rag", "Two Sisters" and "Funny Face".
My personal encounter with the Kinks (or lets say a member of the Kinks) happened in 1971. One day at my local at the railway station in East Croydon (Southern London Region), when I was enjoying my pint of Bitter, suddenly the door flung open and in came Ray Davies! He stood right next to me at the bar, so I had the chance of talking to him for a while. He even missed another train, because we were having such a nice chat. Good old Ray! I’ll never forget this moment! Dave
@0rganizer You lucky person ! I saw the Kinks at the old Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Texas in about '79....what a night...Got to shake hands with Ray after their last encore, of many...no one wanted them to leave. They are THE most under-rated group ever in my opinion. The number of artists that acknowledge their influence is staggering....it would take hours to list.
@clyde8her You're right, they are the most under-rated group ever, but they will be present in people's minds 'Till The End Of The Day'! God bless you, Clyde! Dave
@toondan Thanks for your response. Most people don't realize that the "fuzztone" sound of much of psychedelic music of the late '60's and '70's was brought about by Dave Davies who put slits with a razor in the cones of his speakers which gave it that "You Really Got Me" sound. Companies were soon producing "Fuzzboxes" to create that sound. They were groundbreakers of the enth degree. Glad you appreciate their contributions.
If there were prescience in the songwriting community - even in the heady days of 1967 - they'd have paused ever so briefly, and doffed their hats at the appearance of what is quite possibly the most inspired and gorgeous pop song ever released. A song so sublime that, frankly any clip would just distract from it (especially when it includes Dave with a Gibson Flying V, normally associated with... less subtle styles) But thanks: any Kinks clip welcome.
Cheers Duncan.. I always thought it was about the Southbank n all that area . . Used to pass it enough on our way back home to Tooting Broadway on the old 88 from Trafalgar after a club or two . . . Some People!
@noxidnala Waterloo is a district of London, England, and part of the London Borough of Lambeth. It is situated 1 mile (1.6 km) east of Charing Cross. The area is part of a business improvement district known as Waterloo Quarter, which includes The Cut and the Old Vic and Young Vic theatres, including some sections in the London Borough of Southwark. noxidnal you are a half-witted twit and you don't have a clue what this song is about. (Up yours).
Superlative. Dave actually answered my email trying to express how great his "Kinked" record is and the psychological aspects of what I call Little Brother Syndrome. It's a prized posession, that's how empty my life is. He agreed that one must keep an eye on big brother. I now share an inside joke with Dave Davies, founding member of the legendary Kinks (bask in my glow). The man struck me as humerous, humble and all about the music, just the way you would want him to be. Rock on, lad...
They were and sill are great sad they have got old like we all have always thought Dave was the most talented with his flying V and never got the full recognition he deserved for his work
This takes me back to my childhood. I think I was seven or eight when this song was out. Outstanding memories from then. Thank you so much for posting!
I remember hearing this in the early 80's and thinking about Terry and Julie now being old (from a teenage viewpoint hearing a song from long ago)....A story of Terry and Julie and London from late 1960's to now needs to be told
@ncm1965 it's about Terrence Stamp & Julie Christie, can't remember the full story about their liaison, but still a haunting lovesong & one of my favorite records (that means vinyl) of all time.
Thanks SixtiesPopGold! This is a masterpiece. So much to love. Don't forget though that Dave's guitar and the harmonies takes the song from greatest to greatestest.
Beautiful song and it had to be cut short at the end because Ray and Dave where feuding again. This time about who would get the best window gaze or glaze of Napoleonic desert receipt. Silly jokes - be glazed-over you don't know me.

It will be waterloo sunset on us all if the new changes come.
WHY WE DON'T LIKE THE NEW YOUTUBE:
1 BECAUSE it limits the freedom of creativity.
2 BECAUSE it is impossible to fully customize the channels, and now all look almost the same.
3 It will be tougher to communicate with friends.
4 BECAUSE it is not necessary to change what already works well.
youtube should recognize their failures and listen to their customers.
