Pretty much a standard hold for a pick, with the exception of his finger sticking it a bit more below the pick? So when he does his 'pings' its finger/nail first then the pick? Strange but maybe that's how he gets that sound...
I'm going to be optimistic and say that in my perfect world, 117,000 of the 118, 500 views were people hoping this was either a joke or another State Farm Insurance commercial.
@goodoldbill joe satriani, eric clapton, john petrucci, eddie van halen, dave mustaine, and that is the top of my mind just like 5 seconds or less so he is not the last
@goodoldbill I don't know about that. There are plenty of guitar heros. Joe Bonamassa, John Frusciante, Slash, John Mayer.....like them or not, they are all worshipped by young guitarists.
Hes an incredible player, but his technique seems utterly excruciating. His wrist is always at flexed at an angle and his thumb is bent at the joint, and he plays really fucking hard. Sounds great though
I think this is hilarious because I come from Norway and in norwegian pick ( pikk ) is a name for dick or Penis....... This is how I hold my pick! :D:D:D
@frankyo8 I think its just a 1mm Dunlop pick. I got a pack of his Hybrid strings a while back and they came with some 'Zakk Wylde' picks that were that size.
@gojirason it's more about holding it right, i've never had guitar lessons and i was holding it wrong for about a year and a half when i saw some videos, changed my picking style and saw a huge improvement immidiately..
@GreaterAnticipation holding a pick isl like holding a penicl, you dont even really need to think so scientifically and all about it, its common sense
@gojirason I personally don't think so. You still have to think about how you're holding your pick and each grip will be beneficial for a particular technique. When I play, my grip changes when I'm strumming, tremolo picking, or hybrid picking. Each grip is unique. If I were holding the pick wrongly while I strum, then my playing is going to sound bad and sloppy. Holding the pick is properly is far more important than people think it is.
Never seen Zakk play with a Dunlop ultex sharp cause that's def. what he's got in his hand here...interesting..thought he only used the tortex standards.
@torogami2 man,but marty friedman have his own style to play and as he sayed that he plays that way because he likes the sound more clean, unfortunately he also sayed that have a risk of spoil and it can make mistakes sometimes but anyways you never see him making mistakes when playing, thats more difficult.
@torogami2 Just goes to show you how unimportant holding the pick is, it's all about comfort. By the way, Marty Friedman is about 1,000 times better than Wylde
Call me crazy but I don't really like gibson guitars. The strings are too close together. Which makes certain things easier, but is less comfortable in my opinion.
@Tinfoil93 I get what you mean. I'm an Ibanez guy myself but I never necesarilly had a problem with Gibson string spacing. I was never a fan of the neck angles associated with Gibson guitars due to the tune-o-matic bridges. I also prefer a thin neck. I mean, my favorite guitar (and my current Prestige) is an Ibanez S series so you can't get further from a Les Paul than that... but it's really all preference. Guitars are great because there are so many options.
@dante4d his picking technique is actually a lot like yngwie's, and yngwie's is a lot like django reinhardt's. this type of picking action actually predates the electric guitar. in this video zakk says it's mostly wrist, but a lot of it is from forearm rotation (think of turning a doorknob).
@sadmachine I never examined Yngwie's or Django's picking hand, but Yngwie seems similar, yea. With mostly wrist I think he meant something like "I don't play like Jeff Hanneman from Slayer, who uses like whole body to play 16th notes at 250BPM".
@didgeman987 he doesn't cut his nails on that hand because he does chicken pickin', which means that at times he'll play with both the pick as well as his fingers. It's a hybrid form of playing he learned, I think, from Alvin Lee and he's used it pretty much his whole career. A great early example of this is the solo in "Devil's Daughter" from Ozzy's CD No Rest for The Wicked.
mi finger hurts when i hold the pick, because i broke my nail awfully when i was younger... i mean i doesnt really hurt but its like uncomfortable. when i grab it with my left hand it feels like haven. what should i do grab it with the middle finger or go to doc or .....??
@michelsinay try curving your pointer finger in more and then putting the pick where your first knuckle is and your thumb on top of it so your nail is pointing inward towards your palm ? :)
thanks Cody! i hold it with my middle finger now!! the van halen way and it works just fine! thanks to zakk wylde. who would have thougth that him himself would teach me to hold the pick
I play like the Steve Morse with both index and middle gripping the pick. Would it be a problem particularly with sweep picking? PS: I use the side of my thumb for pinch harmonics
im gonna try his way wen i get off work tonite.i also usually use my thumb for pinch harmonics. And i usually hold the pick with my thumb, index and middle finger-unless im picking thrash like slayer then i have no choice but to hold it the normal way!
@playingwithshotguns Ahah i only do pinch harmonics just with the pick, it requires more sensibility in the way of the timing between the picking note and the move in the string with the finger in your left hand--- tricky but it kinda cool to watch XD , i can't do them with my thumb .. but everyone has its style of "pinching" i guess :P
You have to hold your pick like you would hold your pecker in a soft session of masturbation. You would not want to dash either on the sidewalk even in pretended fit of rage. Teach by example.
