I think you guys are missing the point... its not about who is singing it. Janelle was trying to paint a picture. There was a reason why this song was placed as #14. Thats why she asked for everyone to listen to the cd from begining to end. There's really a magic in it all.
people really need to learn to listen to complete albums, especially with this killer gal, she knows what she's about and has a very clear vision for her sound. love it
I think this song's really about a love that's alive only because people expect it to be, not because the two people in the relationship are actually smitten with each other.
It won't let me post the link, but check out Janelle's live version of this song (look to the right with all the related vids: "Janelle Monae Make the Bus & Wondaland Live At...") then you can hear it sung solely by Janelle.
I'm not really a fan of Janelle Monae's music (though I love her, she's a very smart and talented person) but I do love this song, but that's probably because I'm a big fan of Of Montreal. I can't get enough of this song.
@lovley7000 She's there, she just has the amazing ability to imitate Kevin's voice. The part at :30 is all Janelle, she sings the "I've got a terrible fixation..." parts, and she does a lot of the background singing behind Kevin.
This is the only one i didn't like when i first heard it.....BUT i crave the whole cd.....and after playing it 50 times or so, i cant get the entire cd including this jam out of my mind..........and that's a good thing!
@kdito Vocals are ONLY one instrument! Why don't people get that?! When producers like Timbaland & David Guetta release music they often have no personal vocals featured on the albums. Janella co-wrote and co-produced the album, she may just have chosen to give a greater part of the vocal performance to someone else
@HKsWorld Sure, but that doesn't really have much to do with this song. Not only does she not do much singing on it but of Montreal (aka Kevin Barnes) also did all the producing and writing and played all the instruments. Literally the only contribution Monae made to this song is her handful of vocal parts. Which is unusual since on the entire rest of the album she plays sings writes produces and so on.
@HKsWorld She did. Except for this song, which was written and produced by Kevin Barnes alone, just like everything by of Montreal. If you look up of Montreal you'll find all of their songs sound just like this one (well, not "just like" of course, but their style is pretty consistant). If I'm not mistaken this track was a cast-off from their "False Priest" album, which includes two other songs featuring Monae's vocals ("Enemy Gene" being the main one).
@BARRUMUNDII That's exactly what I was thinking. how much does she sing in this song. It's pretty much all of Montreal. But, it's all good. love them both a lot. ;-)
This song is definitely a grower, but it's great...
SN: Could the "terrible fixation" = her wanting to go back to "Wondaland"?

LOL! @ "I saw you spit on London just like you were a Peter Pan!"
&
"I'm standing over you eating Juicy Fruits until it gets in your eye... yeah-heah!"
Wth do these lines even mean?? I LOVE this song!
Braenchild1 1 year ago 5
@Braenchild1
She is probably saying the person she is talking about is childish by comparing him to Peter Pan.
"I'm standing over you eating Juice Fruits..." is probably talking about how she is trying to annoy the person to get them to leave.
The whole song sounds like it is about a guy that she hates as a person but can't stop fantasizing about. It has pretty wacky lyrics though.

Certain parts of this song sound just like David Bowie!

It is mostly of Montreal, but she does perform it by herself live. I mean, I think she wrote most of the song and music.

@jackcanthink Kevin Barnes from Of Montreal wrote the entire song.
