She was ROBBED..there are no form breaks in this routine you delusional liars toes are pointed legs glued together..You can not deduct because of the way her body was made like her bow legs...
It's interesting to see how there are far fewer glaring errors or falls in these finals compared to now when the gymnasts are encouraged to risk executing overly complex routines badly rather than a simpler routine cleanly.
I have to say dawes was always coming up short in the olympics in '92 and '96 i think because her style of gymnastics was so... american, And there where no american judges on the panel, all international and they really cared about pointed toes straight legs, which unfortanetley for dawes bowed legs, was difficult for her. Dawes style is more national championship instead of olympics. Don't get me wrong she is an amazing athlete but i really think the judges deducted on things that werent fair
Wow, I couldn't agree with you more! Her style was very "American" but for whatever reason it didn't translate well on an international stage....at times. Her routines (although the release moves were huge), were usually a bit conservative.
Dawes was robbed here. It seems stupid she was so overscored for worse routine in team finals, yet underscored here. It is like there was an agenda at play.
@serenakicksass I agree. She should've at least scored a 9.825. Bi Wenjing was okay, but had a noticeable mistake. Bi should've only gotten a 9.8 or 9.812. It should've been GOLD- Khorkina. SILVER- Chow. BRONZE- Dawes.
Judging is a little more critical at this stage because it is the finals, even if it was better than the optional routine. Still, even though Wenjing and Chow tied for silver, they did not award a bronze medal. Dawes came in fourth.
ITA. I notice Tim doesn't call the over-arch on the handstand just before Dawes's Hindorff. As you say she doesn't hit her handstands (although the judges seemed to ignore the flaw under that code), I too like some fans seem to hear her hit the low bar with her feet. And I think Dom could have pointed her toes a bit better.
Dominique Dawes was magnificent in her floor exercise...and totally impressive on the uneven bars!...she was simply amazing to watch....much love to her trainers, her family, and friends to give us a page in history to admire and be thoroughly entertained by; for as long as there is a TV on the planet!
The final results were 1)Khorkina, 9.85 2)Bi, 9.837 2)Chow, 9.837 4)Dawes, 9.800 5)Kochetkova, 9.787 5)Podkopayeva, 9.787 5)Amanar, 9.787 8)Milosovici, 9.75 Dawes performed 4th in the lineup after Pods, Milo & Kochetkova. Why does Dominique only score slightly higher than the 1st three who didn't even stick their dismounts? Second, how difficult is the hindorff, 1.5 pirouette/bail to handstand combo? There's so much mixed info here on where in the top 4 she should've placed?
Well the deduction judges supposably took for a small hop on any event except vault was a myth. I doubt the last 4 gymnasts you listed were deducted anything for a small hop and probably scored the same as they would have anyway.
well for starters, she clipped her foot on the low bar after her uprise. secondly, she had a loose back in a couple of her handstands, which were deductions, as well.
However, that landing was perfect. Not only stuck, but completely sold with the head thrown back and presented like it was part of the routine! Regardless, one of the best to ever do it, and her routines NEVER looked like the ones being thrown by EVERYONE else. Go Dawes!
I'm her biggest fan, and I can certainly admit that this wasn't her best performance. However, I couldn't get past Amy Chow's form being rewarded simply because she threw a lot of messy stalders. I thought Dom would've gotten bronze behing Bi's silver and Khork's gold.
@Jude74 khorkina and chow didn't have form brakes. or maybe i am mistaken? Can you please tell me where you saw form brakes and i will watch their routines over, because maybe i missed something
@luv4cookie1 Khorkina hits the low bar with her feet right before her release move, only one judge caught it and that judges score was dropped. Chow gets crooked on her second stalder on the low bar, and then the obvious form and steps on the dismount (probably somewhat overlooked because of the extreme difficulty).
I would have had it: Dawes gold, Khorkina silver, Kochetkova bronze. Chow had such messy form and was overscored due to difficulty. Wenjing was just one amazing move, the Gaylord, th rest was mediocre. Dawes and Kochetkova were both robbed.
If I remember correctly Dawes was first up on bars in the event finals. Scores tend to rise later on. If she wasn't one of the first ones up the score would have been higher.
oh wait im wrong Dina Kotchetkova was 3rd and dawes was 4th...and i dont believe scores get higher as the final goes on...she gotta 9.8!!!!!!!!! and was in the lead after this routine...sorry if i sound too harsh
You didn't sound too harsh. It's been over ten years and I was getting mixed up with Dawes being first on the vault and just thought it was the bars. Dawes was still in an early spot. Gymnasts always want to be one of the last ones up because scores do tend to rise later on. This is why in team competition they always use their best gymnast last. Unfortunately in and event final, you may not get the spot you wanted.

Chow deserved a share of gold with Khorkina and Dawes and Bi deserved to share bronze.
metsdudenj 6 months ago
Chow and Khorkina were better, her form isn't great here, and the routine was original but lacked a bit of pizzaz.
On the plus side her releases are always super high and it was a fabulous dismount.

i wonder if the only reason she scored lower on this routine then it the TF&AA [even with the stuck landing] because she missed a few handstands

This routine had a lot of form breaks. More so then Khorkina and Chow. I thought it was third maybe fourth best of the EF.
