Gotta agree, amazing lesson from joe. What in the world is so bad about inspiring the kid?!? Negativity on this comment thread is ridiculous and like ppl already said - If you're a guitarist and you paid attention to this - YOU WALKED AWAY WITH NEW KNOWLEDGE!!!!
OMB !!! what a great video! Tal will have this to watch & PRACTICE from. Even if he didn't "get it" @the time, he will be able to watch this over & over & over & pick up things as he grows as a Musician. Mr. Bonamassa is a very busy guy & Tal was in the right place @the right time to be able to have this happen. THANK YOU JOE for inspiring & teaching our young people !! :-)
Would you please give me some good blues/country song that I could learn? I'm 16 and would love to get more inspiration. I've looked myself, but I can't really find any songs that inspire me more than the ones I've already learnt. All I want is more :)
@OptoOcto Trust me, I'm a novice player. You might want to look into one of Joe's tab books that he has out. There are two of them: Joe Bonamassa "Play It Like It Is" and Joe Bonamassa "Blues Deluxe Tab Book". That would be a very good start for you. :)
@ericjohnsonroxx Could not agree more. I see Joe B. on March 2nd, 2011. When he gets some o his super fast riffs going I totally hear Eric Johnson al a "A Via Musicom", etc going on.
FWIW I thought it was a great little info session....I have been playing 35 years and I got something very valuable from it...and I bet the kid did too. A student needs to be challenged, and he probably just blasted off a few riffs to show the kid "what could be". No guitarist can resist playing a great guitar, even for a few seconds.
I think its fairly obvious that the kid's taken in more than, well what most of us can fathom.. That said, if I could say something 2 Tallan man thru this comments page. It would be tht its v.imp he finds, builds, follows & Enjoys his own pace with music in general.. Every guitar/instrument is different, and that's only a multiplier to the already infinite possibilities that are soo clearly within reach.. He musnt play out of spite or if he Has to. Only whn he needs 2! He's got the time.. Peace!
Don't listen to the negativity Joe, I don't know why they are. Obviously you had very little time, and you did a great job considering that, and even if you had more time, it's one of those very important lessons that every guitar player should know IMO! See you at Carre oct 6th! :D
I'm not getting the negativity. How many people in Joe's position would even give a kid the time of day? Joe is nothing if not a really cool guy who would not give short shrift to anybody. I was privileged to see Joe the other night in Cincy. Absolutely blew me and everyone else there a way. Best show I have ever seen.
@dwcarkuff Yes, agreed! You realize it wasn't that long ago that Joe was in Tallan's shoes, and watching absorbing, getting lost in practice, and playing with greats like Danny Gatton, and BB King. They took time for Joe, Joe will take time for Tallan and others I'm sure. God bless them both!
You know, I 'd like to make a comment about this since I recorded it. I spoke with Joe two weeks ago and he felt bad about the negative comments on this video. Really, this was filmed after his guitar clinic and before his show at night. It was a spur of the moment thing and really, Joe and Dave Pate were about to leave when Carl, Tallan's dad, asked Joe to show him something. It was not intended to be a "lesson". Both Tallan and Joe are friends of mine and both are great, kind guys!
@Blues71 I think people are confused because they don't realize what Joe is doing. Joe is a busy man and he knows the affect that his virtuosity will have on Tallan's eager mind. Young kids don't get discouraged. This experience probably built so many more possibilities in Tallan's mind the average person couldn't comprehend. Tallan will be a great guitarist and Joe is speaking to him on their level. Don't expect the 'average' viewer to understand their connection. Lesson: Joe is inspiring him.
@yogithecamel Yogi, you hit the nail right on the head!! Tallan has always been a sponge with a thirst for knowledge. I've watched him watch other performers and then several months or a year down the road, he will incorporate something from that performer into his playing. Sometimes it's ever so subtle, but trust me, he never forgets! ;) He's now 11 years old and I saw him and his new band play this past Saturday night. I would have hated to follow him on the card that night! Tremendous!!!! ;)
I'm not a guitarplayer (I'm a bassist) but I think that you need to be a guitarplayer to understand what joe's saying and don't underestimate T-Man, he's good and knows a lot about this stuff. also I think Joe is just being enthousiastic and goes really fast because he's exited and has little time. I know I am when I'm talking about bassguitars with people who wouldn't reconize one. (excuse me for my bad english...excited and dutch ;))
That little lad understands the lesson he's being given, and so do I (although I am nowhere near as good as the young 'un); guitar scales work in box or "block" patterns and shifting smoothly between one block and another is the point here- Joe is teaching the lad how to sound smooth wherever he happens to be on the fretboard... i wish i was shown that when i was 9.... anyone criticizing that lesson doesnt play guitar or is blinded by Joe's speed
I don't think there was an issue with the lesson. Why should Joe tell him exactly how to play something? He will learn. I think Joe probably told Tallan what he felt was important to understand. The basic gist of the lesson was for Tallan to go home and learn to play every key in every position of the guitar that way he can play his solos more fluid instead of sticking with the standard "5 positions of the pentatonic scale" Joe's blocks were centered around the root of that particular key.
Tallen is just lookin' at Joe like a gleaming eye lobster lol and his age (or for my age that matter) why wouldn't he?. Joe is a skillful player, but not so much when it comes to teaching -- and why should he be, he never had to teach to supplement his income.
"being able to play in the key of F no matter what fret you are at" makes perfectly good sense. from there the kid or anyone else can start to learn where each F note is on the fretboard and take it from there.
Question: IS joe just running through pentatonic shapes? He's obviously not playing full major/minor scales, so i was wondering if anyone could hear what exactly he's doing. Sounds like pentatonic/eric johnson?
joe is right though, learn your fret board and you know what to do. the second you learn where each and every single note is on the fret board, then you can build speed, i don't think joe is showing off, he's just showing, keep it up, always something to learn.
No one is better qualified to give advice to T-Man than Joe. A prodigy himself, playing with BB King at age 12, Joe is one of the greatest ever. If we'd had You Tube 20 years ago, you'd have heard of him before this. Don't dis Joe B. Phenomenal! If the kid can grow up to be half as good as Joe, he'll go far.
this kids aptitude for guitar would allow him to understand what joe is saying. Only a guitar noob would say that joe is going to fast. Tallen seems to be very accomplished on guitar for his age.
@vincentvan2 Hahaha I picked up guitar and within a year and a bit scored a scholarship into the AGI (Australian Guitar Institute). To put it simply, I know my shit. You obviously have no clue about music or guitar or even teaching for that matter. What Joe is saying might be easy for an older, advanced player to comprehend, but not Tallan, he's too young at this stage and would just be intrigued due to Joe's speed. Think before you speak.
@ovomusic Yeah, but he does make a point. You shouldn't only play in one position since players that do that tend to be very static in developing where they're going in a solo. Probably very hard to ingest that if your teacher's amazing playing is distracting the entire time though.
I've known Tallan for a few years now. He studies hard in school as well as practices guitar. He's played with some of the greatest guitarists that I've seen including the great Joe Bonamassa. Maybe Tallan didn't understand everything, but he is like a little sponge and took what Joe told him and wil use it. I've seen him do that time and again. Please keep in mind he's only 10 years old now and also keep in mind that Joe is one of, if not THE, top players in the world today.Let's stay positive.
hm, im a self taught guitarist...and i now see that the way i learned myself to go all over the guitar....is just about the same "method" that Joe uses...boy! was that a confidence boost xD
Hahah he shoudl talk more and play less. Really, that kid is really young, he should just play some simple licks to prove his point he doesn't need to shred up the entire fretboard :P Keep it simple
Why would he do that? It sounds better when you have more options sometimes, you feel more free and can handle things better when transposing and what not. You know what I mean? No reason to stop learning or learn less
wow what a horrible lesson joe is great but shredding some blues stuff and say "theres a block here... and here... and here.." doesnt teach him anything is more like "see kid Im awesome" more than anything lol
@decadence18 i disagree, if you play guitar the lingo is easily understandble and relatable. Block is a term i would definitely use to describe what he is trying to get across
@decadence18 I bet the T Man pick up the guitar and played back everything he just showed him note for note. really humble like it was no big deal lol. seriously I bet he got more than you think.
@decadence18 you would be suprised at what people can pic up. i have leart many things on guitar just watching and listening! it doesnt matter if he just sat there and played, as long as he took the time to just show him one thing and stuck with it, wich he did.
