Humanity did not become the dominant species on Earth just by being smart - we become the dominant species because we are smart AND utterly ruthless. Almost all of our weapons are limited to the surface of the Earth, we haven't developed orbital weapons of any kind. So if an alien ship just hovered above us raining death and destruction, we wouldn't be able to do much.

When questions about the possibility of extraterrestrial life are brought up, I always argue that God couldn't possibly have created the universe just for us (yes, I'm a christian and I'm proud of it), it's just too damn big. And if there are other civilizations, they might be more advanced then us, and they might be about as advanced as us, or they might be less advanced. I also imagine that God has been to their worlds too, and watches over them.

The myths of wiping out life, removing the crust, etc, are just that--myths. Every nuke ever built all detonated at once wouldn't be enough to wipe out even the state of TX. The economic effects of war would be as they always are.

@protoall While we struggle to get off of our planet and go to the moon or Mars, an alien race may easily travel millions of light years to reach Earth. So they would obviously have superior transportation and we would assume that they had superior combat capabilities as well.
Almost all of our weapons are limited to the surface of the Earth, we haven't developed orbital weapons of any kind. So if an alien ship just hovered above us raining death and destruction, we wouldn't be able to do much.
