The original commander that proposed the expedition , the Marquis de Santa Cruz., Spain's best and most experienced sea commander died months before the battle. Tha man chosen by the king to replace Santa Cruz was the Duke of Medina Sidonia , a land commander that had never fought a battle at sea before. A terrible mistake by King Phillip II. This fact is not mentioned much , but im sure that it had a lot to do with the Spanish defeat.

According to the most recent US census the majority of Hispanic America consider themselves White. I am not Spanish but of Spanish descent. My experience is that our Spanish cousins are not bigots. The Spanish fleet sheltered in the Netherlands & northern France and did not dare sail back through the English channel because of the threat of the English Navy. They also hoped that the English Catholics would help them but they sided with their own countrymen. Those Spanish Galleons that sailed round Scotland also thought that they could get new supplies from the Scots. Instead the Scots also slaughtered many of of the Spanish sailors.

Disease also played its role in 1741, I don't deny it.

Let's point out also that the Spanish Armada was badly led. The original commander that proposed the expedition , the Marquis de Santa Cruz., Spain's best and most experienced sea commander died months before the battle. Tha man chosen by the king to replace Santa Cruz was the Duke of Medina Sidonia , a land commander that had never fought a battle at sea before. A terrible mistake by King Phillip II. This fact is not mentioned much , but im sure that it had a lot to do with the Spanish defeat.

Britain is a second tier power that should never been compared to Espana. Only Rome belongs in the realm of the Spanish.
In 1588, the English wisely avoiding fighting the Armada for they would have been destroyed. Only one Spanish ship was lost in combat. It was God's will that England not become another Spanish colony. But for the Prostestant wind, England would have been conquered within a month of Spanish Marines hitting the beaches.

According to the most recent US census the majority of Hispanic America consider themselves White. I am not Spanish but of Spanish descent. My experience is that our Spanish cousins are not bigots. There are exceptions to every rule, but as a general rule I have found Spaniard to be fine lot. I have traveled extensively in LatAm and what I have found is that many mulatoes and mestizos consider themselves part of "la banda blanca"

Also, if they went to most places in the world that marvel white skin (say China, Japan, Or India) they wouldn't be considered white. No US American in their right mind would call a mestizo or mulatto white. It's funny that they are white on paper but outside of the census they are not. Also, the segregation in latin america proves that there is a defined ideea of race.

There are countries such as China and India that growing that stress english. And contrary to popular belief, most ''hispanics'' can and do speak english. You are correct that English is the second language of the world. But Spanish as you noted is the second language in the US. It is also the second language in Brazil. As Asians choose a third language I believe that Spanish and Portuguese will be clear choices because of the emerging economic might of resource rich LatAm.
I sent my kids to Germans language school. Today they wish it had been Spanish. One is now fluent in Spanish and another wishes to master it.

@JollyRodders What I was trying to convey is that if someone speaks a second language in most parts of the world it is likely to be English thanks to the USA. Spanish is the second language in Brazil and the US. In Asia, Spanish and Portuguese are the most popular languages after English.
In Europe, it is hard to say what is the most popular language after English. I can see German for Central and Eastern Europe.

There is a major difference between the English Protestant conquest and enslavement of non-Whites and the Spanish Catholic process. Although some English and Spanish had the same tendency for evil, the Spanish crown and the Catholic church encouraged intermarriage and prevented to break-up of slave families. @tizona101 Having read through all the posts from Brits and Spaniards, others too, I can only conclude that sometimes the Spanish navy has won some great battles against us, and equally we've done the same to you. For many years the Spanish were the most powerful empire and afterwards it was the British. I suppose both Spanish and British should be equally proud of their navies, as it seems both were incredibly good. Neither navies were easy to beat in any battle, they were all hard fought.

You sunk your own ships, and then pretended to surrender at Cartagena. When you came up the English channel, we sunk your ships for you, and didn't bother pretending to surrender. We didn't have to.
At Cartagena the English took the battle to the Spaniards in their own city, they came ashore and fought on land. The only Spanish that came onto English soil where those that were shipwrecked by their inability to sail through a storm.

The Spanish fleet sheltered in the Netherlands & northern France and did not dare sail back through the English channel because of the threat of the English Navy. They also hoped that the English Catholics would help them but they sided with their own countrymen. Those Spanish Galleons that sailed round Scotland also thought that they could get new supplies from the Scots. Instead the Scots also slaughtered many of of the Spanish sailors.

A Haitian kid I knew years ago told me that when Haiti was fighting for independence from France it was a really SPOOKY scene as Haitian voodoo priests were throwing hurricanes at the French fleets and even when some French soldiers landed the vudun masters were throwing zombies at them.
It may sound dumb but the segwey is that the English are known for WITCHCRAFT and maybe did similar things. And remember the Old Testament speaks on god doing stuff like that for the Jews. So who knows?
