  • I started sewing when I was 8 years old so its great to see you guys getting involved so young! A couple of pointers for you: use a table for cutting and to make a circle skirt out of one piece of fabric: as long as your fabric is big enough - fold it into quarters (or eighths) then you only have to draw a quarter (or eighth) circle for the hem and waist. And remember, cut the waist smaller in circumference to start with, you can always cut it larger after fitting but you can't make it smaller.

  • this was kind of funny .

  • Glad to see so young and so talented girl. And even better to see actually the making of a skirt even I didnt know this. Had been searching for a while. It's good when some not so perfect person does it cuz this way you get notice of the flaws of the process as well. Question is I wana make a full length skirt how do I make length longer of the circle even the widest cloth comes doesnt fit full length?

  • I love everything about this video - you are amazing!!! Do you live anywhere near NY and want to teach me how sew well o_o I seriously want to learn and you seem awesome : )

  • I have to say I've been looking for tutorials on how to make dresses and your's is the one that would work the best for me. All of the other ones require a mannequin or a dress form, but your's is easy and it's just the look I'm looking for.

  • Hmmm

  • that was lame!

  • i didn't see the drawing...

  • What is the measuring tool you used for tracing the donut shape called?? Please message me back.

  • Barlow Girls! Yay!

  • Nice job... very nice job... It is obvious to me you've practiced a lot. I love to sew and I love making things like that. :) Very nice...

  • cherry donut.......hehehehe

  • lol you need to make these vids alone tbh.. the other girls seemed to want alot of attention and its not good for a youtube video :P well done tho

  • i tried this and it is very pretty

  • aw this is a really cute video :) people should be less harsh on your sister; she is a kid, after all.

  • You are the answer to my prayer. Thank you so much. You are the best :-))

  • No offence but your sis is very annoying and likes so much attention it very distracting. Very unprofessional. It would be better if you could keep her out of the video.

  • cool video , I am learning how to make a dress , it is realy hard. I love your dress though lol. Also please write to me. thankz x

  • ugh.

  • thank you for your idea. i didnt ever think to do the doughnut thing. :)

  • nice try....

  • Thanks a ton for the video! This will totally help with a sailor themed dress that I will be making ^_^

  • u dont really need ro draw the full circle.. it would be easier if u fold the material into 4 part n then u cut it based on the drawings that was fold into 4 same part..

  • interested in learning to sew

    work with me

    jan,ssewingworkshop on face book

  • they style of skirt is called "full". in other words its a full skirt sweet heart.

  • the drawing is just looks like a donut.a big circle with a smaller one in the middle.

  • Can you please tell me what material you used to make that?

  • erm yah id wear that with underwear whil dancing...lol

  • Pretty useful =) Next time film without the window BEHIND you, it's like watching a talking silhouette.

  • its good but im a little confused at the part where you draw those circles. someone care to explain??? >.>

  • I loved your tutorial but please get better camera people next time. I was so in to what you where doing but the camera people just annoyed the heck outta me.

  • @GurlShonny - oh I think it's funny. Adds to the interest :-)

  • @GurlShonny Oh, I loved them :-)

  • no it dosent its just u... fizzitup

  • This is great. How would you sew the skirt to the top?

  • ahhmmm is it just me or can i not see the drawing

  • I can't see the drawing either.

  • This is soo cute:P it totally reminds me of the movies I made as a kid:P hehe

  • haha this was cute

    good job! i enjoyed watching

  • had fun watching this and learnt something lol Thanks guys - this was informative and entertaining :-)

  • you guys are really cute!!!

    :)

anyways, thankyou... i'm definitely gonna try that out.

  • cute i might try this might

  • use chalk instead of a sharpie next itme

  • hahahahaha

  • this vid takes 4 eva 2 load!

  • hey thats a great way to make the skirt of the dress thank!!

also do you use special scissors to cut the fabric and don't you hem the bottom?? or do you just be very neat.. hahah not excatly my strong point in fashion 0_o

    please write back!

  • hehe... I don't think it has anything to do with the scissors; it's the type of fabric you use and... how neat you are.

trust me, I ended up trimming the thing way more than I'd thought I would, but I think it's easier than hemming.

  • don't forget hemming room! lol

but I'm so glad I found this, I have to make a skirt jacket for a ball gown and obviously it needs to be big enough to fit a hoop skirt and petticoat underneath.

  • what if you dont have much fabric to work with? like just enough for the dress? p.s. love barlowgirl!

  • I want to do that!

  • Hey that's Barlow Girl playing in the background!

  • I LOVE THIS IDEA !!!

  • Comment removed

  • Kristen lol :D

  • ok... you have natural flare !

I hope you go to College for fashion, you will do well !

  • oh thank you =]

actually, I'm thinking about going into design or something like it (probably dealing with web design) ... and that's pretty close!

  • my name is kristin..lol..

  • this actually was sooo pretty!

    good job!

you looked so good on it on part 2!!

oh but how do you make the straps

for the dress? how do you stitch it on?

  • wow this video is so helpful! i want to make a dress, but it has short sleeves.. is there a way i can do that\?

  • i give u credit for that

  • cool thank u very much please add more

  • HEyy, for the circle skirt part, how did you make the compuss thing. im trying to make a dress but have no idea how to make the compuss! please help me out.!

    xxx

  • I think I just used a ribbon or string or something that I measured to the right length. I safety pinned one end to the place where I would have the center, and held a pecil to the other end (or if you have a thick enough ribbon etc, cut a small slit and stick the pencil through)

It's kind of primitive, but it works as long as the cloth stays spread out enough.

  • ummm....will the skirt still puff out a bit when you spin if you use fabric cotton?

  • The skirt will spin out no matter what you use. I actually did use a cotton blend for this, so no worries!

  • what the hell???

  • ^^ I love the look of a circle skirt

does the bottom part of the skirt unravell a bit without hemming it? ...Hemming a circle would deffinetly be a feat for myself...

  • It REALLY depends on what fabric you use. If you use the kind of material used in t-shirts (or even used a couple of like XXL t-shirts to cut up and piece together for this... i have done that...) or fleece (which for this i woundn't really reccommend) then it won't fray. I'd say your best bet is a cotton or polyester knit (like t-shirts, again) and mine hasn't frayed yet!

  • Oh good!

My brain + circle hemming + sewing machine + minimum velocity of the hem would probably = bleeding fingers.

    It has happened before...

  • COOL! ur so good!

  • it would be easier if you folded you piece of fabric in half i think

  • this is not how you make a skirt...

    but awesome!!!

    haha

    good work!!

  • then how do you make a skirt?

  • cooolll girls....

  • amazing i love !! can you make like some more stuff too?

  • Thankks for replying :)

And did you sew it together or what? :S :L

Lovee the dress at the end x

  • umm i sewed the top to the bottom, and sewed the sleeves on... oh and i sewed up the back of the top but other than that no sewing required!! (unless you use a really fray-y fabric, but i don't like those. then you have to hem it =P)

and thanks! it was so much fun making it, and it just makes it that much more fun to have it turn out well at the end =]

  • Thanks again :L

have you got a my space, facebook, msn..?

Ermm and yeah you now the way yo explaind how to do the radious thing:L

Well today we learnt how to do it and i got a new sewing machine from my sister :D

    Write back x

  • youre welcome!!

mm yeah i have a myspace, i don't use it that often (hence, like 10 friends...) but feel free to add me (nutterbutterfly22)

and that's so funny you learned it around now (i'm assuming in school) after you watched the video =P

  • Hey i Added you on Myspace :D

My names Chelsea and im wearing black shorts and back top with white blouse thing in my pik, just to let you know b'coz it will show up when you next sign onto it :D

Same i never really go on it much b'coz its to hard to use :S :L

    id rather use bebo x

Talk to you through myspace x

  • Hey x

I love the way the dress has turned out at the end :D

    But i have a question?

How did you do the algeba thing?

Like how did you measure your waits then do the ratio thing?

  • thank you =]

and for the algebra thing... yeah. so like if x is the measurement of your waist, and y is how long you want the skirt to be, then to find out how to make the BIG circle, you just do x divided by 2 times pi (x/2pi), then add y, and that's the radius. to find out how big to make the LITTLE, you just divide x by 2 times pi. it's easier when you can actually do the "pi" and "divided" signs, but maybe i'll do a whole video on that... hmmm... jk. i dont like math that much.

  • well, I didn't know you had to use algebra to sew!=) so I can estimate that the radius of the big circle is approximately 7times more of the smaller circle?

  • see, it really depends on a) how large your waist is compared to how long your legs are and b) how short you want the skirt.

that's the beauty of it, you can change it around to make it a miniskirt, or an ankle lenght skirt if you REALLY want that =]

  • Hah..thnx! I've bought myself some cloth! gona try it soon! yay..are u gonna put up more sewing vids?lemme noe..=)

  • xD I love you!

This reminds me so much of physics...

My physics teacher will probably get a laugh out of me knowing what the minimum velocity that you would have to be travelling in order to go around (upside down w/o falling) the outside hem of my brand new skirt...

    <3

  • horrible video

  • ugh, that is just rude you person!

  • haha wow megan. thanks. YT never alerts me when comments like this come in, idk why. they send me an email for every other comment...

  • YAY! I am hoping that this helps me in making a dress for a cosplay that I am doing. Cute vid, and thanks!

  • The dress thing on the paper, doesnt show up ''/ .

  • sorry about that =]

it basically looks like a donut. concentric circles, if you know what those are, with the space between colored in

  • Ohh right. Cool :)

    Thanks for replying (Y)

  • sugoi!! thats so koool nice music ^^
