in the manga obito gave his eye as a present for kakashi becoming jounin.obito didn't give him a present so when obito got crushed under a rock he offered his shaingan eye cus hes whole left side was crushed. zetsu saved tobi by nurturing him and renamed him to tobi so he could join the akatsku. tobi wears his mask cus no one wants to see a huge gaping whole instead of an eye. if you don't believe me check it your self. tobi also abosred some of madara's power.
