@WavelengthPrime Wow that's dumb. Gavin is one of the most musical drummers in the world. Obviously Maitland is a great drummer too, but he's not in the band anymore. If you liked his choices for parts more than Gavin's that's fine, even though I don't think it's possible to improve on any drum part Gavin has ever put to any song with P.T. However, saying anyone has "so much more of a musical mind" than arguably the most musical drummer on the planet is beyond stupid.
@headz51230 No idea. The guy gave some nice input in earlier albums. Lightbulb Sun for example. He simply has a different style. So called 'fans' should shut the fuck up.
@LucicPower You're a tool. For what PT was creating at the time, Chris was perfect. They are both great drummers that are suited for different styles. As PT became heavier, Harrison was a clearly better choice, but for the more psychedelic stuff, Maitland was the one. The ignorance of some people.
@znoahmarhoadskill I'm not denying that he couldn't do anything, but for the psychedelia and simplicity that PT had during the early years, Maitland was perfect. And if that guy below wants to get even technical on this particular song's drumming, if you have the Star's Die Delirium Years CD's, and you look in the pamphlet, Steven Wilson told him specifically to have an extremely simple drum beat, thus to accentuate the guitar and lyrical aspects of it. Plus he's up there, and we're not.
@NyteblitZ I totally agree with you, and I'm a drummer. I actually prefer Chris' drumming to Gavin's when Gavin plays old PT stuff. Something about how Chris feels the songs just appeals more to me, and he really knows the songs inside and out. I listened to Gavin on the new Anesthetize DVD playing old PT tunes that Chris was originally on, and Gavin just over-played in my opinion. Chris knew how to keep it simple, but make it interesting when needed. ie: dislocated day.
@pinkfloydfan417 Yeah I agree on the over-playing part. On a comparison of the two, the one that comes to mind is Shes moved on. Chris has a great feel for the music, but I don't think he would have been really suited for the more heavy/progressive stuff, but who knows.
I don't mind live photography. It is an art form within its self and certainly captures truely epic live moments. However mobile photography is absolutely pointless, you'll get really poor quality pictures even with a high spec camera phone. I had a person next to me at a PT show and they were clicking away at their mobile phones and almost distroyed my enjoyment of the show.
@raginghormonez no, Maitland was great and still is... he had that psychedelic sound pt was lookin for at that time.... now that they´re after some heavier sound they´ve got the perfect drummer to fit that style.... but that doesen´t mean maitland´s work was worse that garrison´s
I love PT and the musicianship behind it..but i'm a bit scared that they're full of themselves or at least Steven specially since the last show i saw when "they" requested that no photography of any kind should take place during their set..i know if i had fans i would love it if my fans were taking pics of myself and the band..what kind of shit is that?
they think it's distracting and disrespectful to have a bunch of cameras in their faces while they're trying to play their music for people. it makes sense. they're not full of themselves i just think steven wilson takes himself very seriously haha
@eviilgrin: I understand what you mean but there's a why behind their decision, from what I've heard in the past someone taped them and sold the videos.
Wish i could play slide only about half as good as Steven does in that solo section. What kind of wider looking slide is that he uses? Maybe that has something to do with the ease of sustain he gets, thus making it easier to play without having to use a finger as a capo above the slide.
Yeah they're still a band. Although Steven Wilson is involved in a load of other projects and a solo project as well, so I don't know when they're playing or recording again.
The new album coming out 22nd of September, called "The Incident". They've recorded it and will be touring the US in september and Europe in October. Here you are :)
Chris Maitland is a GREAT drummer, I love his style and creativity. Gavin Harrison is just a perfect and very very fine drummer, but Chris is a fantastic drummer....
yes it is lol, most people are too thick to realize what music actually is (my definition is - a collective of related sounds which evoke an emotion" does "bitch get low" or "go shorty" evoke an emotion?? and another sad fact of the human race is that they seem to listen to music because of tonality, well i mean if they heard any classical music in a different tone, say electric violins with distortion it wld suddenly be a bad song, its saddening, music is the most misunderstood thing in history
haha i like your examples. yeah american music is altogether ridiculous. almost all of my friends are into underoath and other screamo bands. in my opinion, screamo is by far the worst style of music. it's simple, all sounds the same, and is just obnoxious. the way they sing too. its like they are crying. and the screamers don't even know how to sing to begin with. that's why they scream. well they are always bitching about something. lol, rap shouldn't even be classified as music.
I wouldn't say Opeth is screamo. they actually have some tunes i like, although I'm not really into harsh vocals.... screamo is like underoath, atreyu, and other crap like that.
Akerfeldt grunts, that's not screamo. Grunting is typical for death metal. Screamo is used in bands like Rise Against and The Used (more hardcore punk).
i'm into classical, prog, and classic rock. I can play several instruments too. I wish porcupine tree would like.. show up in history as one of the most creative bands out there. there stuff is like mad fun to play, and so relaxing to listen to.
Chris Maitland was so much more of a musical mind.

It's not even an actual slide. It's a modified napkin ring that Steven made when he was fifteen. He considers it his most valued guitar possession.
