Oh what wonderful memories this music brings back to me. THIS is music directly from the souls of the magnificent artists that produced this piece. Such reverence for the passing of Bill Evans simply flows here. Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us. Music IS the language of the soul and heart without question in my mind.
I was 22 wen i first heard MR. Metheny and havent stopped since. i would listen to this beautiful masterpiece laying on my bed and i always felt a certain kind of peace. I'm 28 now and i wish my generation would listen to this instead of the crap they play on the radio witch gives you no inspiration what so ever.
I had this on vinyl LP back in the early 1980s and was touched with the way 'September Fifteenth' was composed in tribute to the late Bill Evans who died Sept 15th 1980. Lyle Mays & Pat Metheny were both in awe of Bill Evans who played things from the heart like none other. You can hear the respect and references to Bill Evans "message" in this track. It's a truly wonderful example of Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays together capturing the ethereal soul of the much missed Bill Evans.
@feathersnpaws May I make a suggestion? There is so much on youtube by him. Listening to the Youtube Mix for Pat Metheny would be good, but here's one of my favourites. :) Are you going with me?
@feathersnpaws I envy you ... you are embarking on a great journey ... pat metheny is my favourite artist and when discovering his works it was the best music trip ever !
quando ascolto questa musica credo che pat oltre ad essere un grande musicista ed avere una vena artistica illimitata ,capisco che innanzitutto sia un uomo dal grande cuore sensibile.grazie pat forever.
Think this is my favorite piece by Pat. So full of longing yet a touch of frolic, much like a bubbling spring running thru it, intelligent solitude, reflection, such a wonderful combination of evocative piano, and guitar that is so soulful, to be remembered in this way is stunning.Thank you for posting this for us to be with.
I wish I had the words to discribe how this song makes me feel. Maybe there aren't any such words. I only know that listening to this brings me to an elevated consciousness. A place of peace. Spiritual.
The sheer beauty and deep sense of peace blended with that hint of bittersweet melancholy this tune can evoke is unreal. Whenever I hear it, time and space do not exist anynmore. I came across this gem when watching for the first time Fandango which became one of my favourite movies ever. Thanks for posting.
Soulful tune, melancholic but positive/hopeful at the same time, by two master musicians. I've read somewhere that this tune was written in memory of Bill Evans. I discovered Pat Metheny (and Lyle) in 1997 and i'm glad that i did. I've been to 7 concerts in Copenhagen since then. His (their) music goes right to my heart, the soundtrack of my life, and life in general i think.
first time that I heard this song was when I saw the picture Fandango....now...25 years later...I listen this....yet and I dream...(sorry for my English)
I found this album in the library at a time over 25 years ago when my life was coming apart. I will always thank Pat, Lyle and the rest of the group for helping to put me back together. Whatever they do, they do with such wonderful heart. Love to them all.

This music is for true free sprits that don't need lyrics imposed on them. You all know who you are. I do some of my best design work to this music. Art and architecture are different expressions of the same original inspiration of the soul. A noted Architect said that architecture is "frozen music" in it's mathematical rythems and repetitive elements. Enjoy the art!
@mikkalasabir The true expression of art comes from recognizing the beauty of all creation ... We have a unique opportunity to experience this and share this blessing one to another through our talents. I as well enjoy this music to be quiet , to hear the voice of inspiration ! What a talented artist to allow his genius
to mature to this exponential plateau ... Thanks to Pat Metheny , and artist alike!

I haven't read all the posts, just the first several, and thought it would be appropriate to mention that this piece was written in memory and honor of jazz pianist, Bill Evans, who died on 09/15. I would encourage anyone who appreciates great music to check out Bill Evans and they would have a deeper appreciation of what Pat and Lyle created.

can't understand it - Sept 15 is 1 of my faves and I listen to a lot of PM and LM but every time I hear this passage of the piece these bits jar in my ear ...
so .... are they intentional or not ....???
or maybe intentionally left in to the recording out of a sense of artisitic purity ... ???
According to Lyle Mays himself, commenting on this tune in an audio interview (a Pat Metheny podcast - see Pat's web site), the part from about 4:18 on - Lyle on piano; later, Pat joins him again - was completely improvised! So I think that Lyle's mind was focused on choice of notes, articulation, harmonic progression etc. instead of flawless pianistic execution (as in the world of classical music).
First heard it one late night in my car in the meadows. I was lonely and scared, and, yes, out of myself. Believe me these guys helped me to find some strings I wasn't able to touch by myself.
This song has always spoken to my soul... it carries secrets only I will know, a shared conversation with the ghost of my youth, and the specter of my future. Thanks Pat for creating a central song to the soundtrack of my life....
God bless you for posting this classic...I remember when I 1st bought this in the late 70's.This is magnificent....won't hear this from today's musical types.
Most beautiful duet ever. The way they perform their harmonies is awesome. Flawless performance, perfect expression. One can hear this piece every day and find new colors every time.
every time i hear this song, i remember leaving my old school. As I am crying right now, I remember when i was hugging my best friends. Beautiful song though
One of my favorite songs!!!!!!

I'm favoriting this song because
1. I've been addicted to Nujabes sample of the song ("A Day by Supreme Atmosphere") for the past week using it to study for midterms,
2. The song itself is beautifully composed & performed (and this is such an understatement that I should be shot), and
3. It is the birthdate of my all-time favorite anime/manga character. <3
Wonderful song... I need to look into more Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays music.

Actually, I'm referring to the part from 5:15 on. Just beautiful improvised (!) playing by both Lyle and Pat.

Do you not mean 5:18...

LMAO. It's improv FFS; of course there's going to be some notes that don't perfectly (or perceive to) jive.

Great music but it's funny to read comments about how the music was a reflection of the listener's life and how it spoke to them. Silly.

Silly?
The music does just that though : )

i dont understad how thats silly .
music helps people express themselves in ways words and actions cannot .
jus listening to this kind of music can help someone get through a day.
it has for me plenty of times,

First heard it one late night in my car in the meadows. I was lonely and scared, and, yes, out of myself. Believe me these guys helped me to find some strings I wasn't able to touch by myself.
They were my first friends. I still listen them.

This song has always spoken to my soul... it carries secrets only I will know, a shared conversation with the ghost of my youth, and the specter of my future. Thanks Pat for creating a central song to the soundtrack of my life....
