there is alot of distortion in the movie...1)buddha was born in nepal not the 'ancient kingdom of india' which was always a soverign country and is 2) the little buddha found in nepal in a stupa named raju....if he is a nepali he must have spoken the nepali language not hindi. 3) the people in bhaktapur and kathmandu speak newari and nepali language not hindi 4) the major weakness is the birthpalce of buddha is lumbini (nepal) which is never mentioned in the movie................

I remember reading about this movie years ago, when it was just released. Somewhere someone said that River Phoenix was supposed to play the part of Siddharta, but of course he passed away so they offered it to Keanu Reeves later. But I'm not sure if that is true actually. Anyway, he's doing oké. And the scenery is amazing!
