Another #1 hit for Stevie Wonder on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 177 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also went to #9 on the Top 40 charts. And to the wanna-be's of today: Take note; this is how it's done.
This was the national anthem as far as I was concerned back when it was released. I am screamin right now. I totally love this song. Thanks for posting!!! !!! !!!
we don't need music like this to be manufactured today - they'd only mess it up. i can't listen to broadcasted music, can you? music died in 1983 - after a long, steady decline... coincidentally with James Jamerson's passing... had he lived, he'd probably have little to do... the only bright light was Stevie Ray Vaughan, but...
i don't listen to any new music - but i can smell it... anyway, i can listen to Misters Wonder & Jamerson anytime on CD - over and over for the next 20 yrs... all American entertainment is now controlled by an elite group - but they have no talent... one must make their own music or organize local events. if you look at statistics, musician's pay is lower than a Walmart greeter's salary... sales are at an all time low... music has become a hobby... entertain yourselves...
@Cantormatis : Yeap, I'm with you!!! What I like to do sometimes is switch the balance on my stereo to the one side that has only the bass, the bass drum, and the tamborine. For me, that really get's down with the "get down"! I call it "Southern Porch Funk" !
Critics consider Stevie's work from the seventies as his "classic period." And I guess it was. But his first singles from the sixties will always be my favorites.
Yes God broke the mold. So soulful....pure musical royalty and last of a kind. Start showing this man and all our great legends love, respect and appreciation everyday yall.
Only a few days ago I've got the original Stevie LP "For Once..." in mint quality! Do you want to know how I feel about it after so many years? Incredible. I have this record since 1970 but only as a german pressing - thanks for the black heritage of your country of beautiful soul music from Motown. My mind will cruising now again back to a time, when this kind of music was a passion and art...Love it still after 40 years.Never the crap of today comperes.
A teenage Stevie Wonder doing one of my faves from the year i was born!!!!Man i bet Mom&Dad were gettin their groove on!!!!!Turbulent times of my birth but the best musc ever, including many white artists.
When I was 15 I heard this song the very first time in Berlin in a pool from a transistor radio. I watched my first lady with golden blond long hair. It was summer and Stevie hit the charts with this tune. Now I'm 57 and it's like it was...great tune, I never became tired of hearing it for so long years and the bassline of J.J. still touches my heart . His singing brings back beautiful memories.Want to have music like this today...
I had a little transistor radio too! I used to listen to WSAI as a kid and they played a lot of Stevie's music! Those were definitely the good old days!
1360 AM WSAI I could usually pick them up on my transistor radio when I was a young'un in Dayton Ohio in the late 60's early 70's. Thanks for the memories!
No doubt! He made it sound so effortless and yet so complicated at the same time. I've really never been one to hear bass until I started listening to Stevie's music, and learned how much of a difference it makes to the over all performance.
I remember being a kid when Motown was at its peak, even in my mom's station wagon with the 1 speaker in the dashboard the bass used to always stand out, lol...Always admired James' bass but only recently started trying to play some, humbling and educational at the same time! Thanks for posting
I was born in '77 and I love this music! The bass lines of Stevie's songs in this era of Motown were outstanding. J.J. was the best in the era;matched with Stevie's vocals, unbelievable combo!
Stevie and James Jamerson - now that was inspiration in my youth in Washington D.C.. It was no woncer I wanted to be a soul band since I sang and played the saxophone. I certainly steered my group in that direction demanding more from all of us musically.
1968... what a year! Best music came out that year on so many fronts: Motown, R&B, rock, soul, pop. History will look back and regard 1968 as a confluence of genius.
I have not heard this song in a long time, Stevie is an amazing singer, this is fantastic arrangement, the Funk Brothers, James, Papa Zito, the Detroit Symphony are all in there just kicking down, the result is great music.
Holy Crap, what a bubbling little bass line!! Jamerson was at the top of his game when he laid down this track and probably with little effort. As a bassist, it's pure pleasure to reproduce those 16th-note bass fills. But NO ONE can play it like Jamerson.
listening to J Jamerson on this track is the closest I get to spiritual.
Melody, groove, effortlessly light yet rock solid. i've been listening to this track for years and it floors me every time. what a f###ing genius he was. RIP James
One of the great mini symphonies Stevie wrote that clocked in at under 2:59. There were dozens of them! Wonder and John Lennon were both gifted at writing from the POV of jealous lovers. ;-)
That James Jamerson bassline is wicked. The tambourine and the "papa zita"(as they called it) drum role on the change is awesome. Full orchestration. No one can make music like this now. Stevie is truly a genius..Syreeta sounds sweet on the background.
People can and are making music like this now...its just that the music industry is such that such music can never see the light of day now...our culture is too decadent
I think stevie's version is better. The musicality is more funky and the guitar and bass players are killin from start to finish. Mix in Stevie's great voice and organ playing and you got a classic...
And the Andantes are singing their asses of in the background
