Dear Daniel, This is wonderful. The middle section (starting at about 2:06) is almost painfully beautiful:). During my performing days as a baritone some 20 years ago, I tried to acquire sufficient technique to perform this cycle. Ultimately, a paralyzed vocal cord killed my head voice and (by extension) my technique. But YOU sing "Vier ernste gesange" so well that hearing your performance gives me great vicarious satisfaction:) -- PLEASE keep singing! Best wishes, Steve
Part of the success of the pieces had to do with the accompanist....who sadly is over in England now...:-( But it was a joy to do these, and I come back to them again and again whenever I feel I need to "remember" how to really sing well....thank you for all your kind comments...so sorry that you had those vocal issues.
I am working on these pieces right now (n the lower key), preparing for a recital next semester. I can really identify with your comment on these pieces reminding you how to really sing. I feel like these pieces have really taught me alot about my voice and singing in general.
Lovely! I've been listening to the pieces mentioned in the brilliant Swafford Brahms biography and quite sad to have reached the end. Your rich beautiful voice brings alive this poignant set of songs. Thanks for posting!
The pianist is a good friend of ours who, along with her husband, are about to go over to England to study early music, and damn are we going to miss them. She's even a better singer than she is a pianist, so look out for her in the very near future.
I really did enjoy singing this, probably moreso than anything I've done....thanks so much for the kind words!!!
Robin did a phenomenal job, and she was delighted to get back to some serious playing on Brahms' behalf...it was a pure joy all around. Thanks yet again!!!

Great recording of this cycle! I chose yours over the other ones on youtube for no particular reason, and it really was a treat. Good pianist too!

I thought for the last one that I'd mix in some nice pics of something other than death and Brahms...hehehe.

Great voice and the pianist was great also. Hope you enjoyed doing this as much as we have enjoyed listening today.

Those four were really wonderful. Brahms sure knew what he was doing...not only for the singer but for the pianist. Great work and bravo once more!
