It's sad that this had to happen to a respectable black man, but saying that the officer is a racist is crazy. Everyday officers have to deal with irate citizens and act appropriately. The officer was just reacting to a loud and irate citizen that wouldn't calm down. I listened to Henry Gates's audio of the incident and heard no mention of the officer acting like a racist. It was just another black man using the race card just to get his way. Racism will never die if we are this sensitive.

I dont like, trust or need cops! The police are generally not out for the good of the community at large but arrive like bad news to posture as heros yet serve their own interests. I can remember them bringing drugs into my community in the 70s, taking bribes in the eighties, attacking and killing citizens in the 90s and now arresting (many) people on their own door steps and its 2009 (this has happened to others).

Cambridge is a rather racist place from my experience. I am just glad the cop did not shoot him as NYPD often does in these matters.
How come the issue was not dropped once the ID and license was provided? The cops could have asked campus security since the university owns the home.
I think the Cambridge Police Dept needs to review the way they conduct themselves. As for Gates he should have remained calm in his home.

First, If you were a suspect, AND A OFFICER FOLLOWED you inside your house and then you provided "proof" of residency to end suspicion, An officer will not ask you to come outside for your safety!!! Second, If he failed to provide proof, why werent burgulary charges added?? This officer is highly respected, helps teach the new officers about race relations (after being REQUESTED to do so by a black officer).
When called to a crime in progress the officer has to maintain complete control, be highly suspicious of ANYONE, until the situation is completly resolved. The "professor" initially refused to cooperate with the officer, and in fact was beligerant. When the cops show up YOU DO WHAT THE COPS SAY IMEDIATLY NO QUESTIONS ASKED. Then get his badge #.

Refusing to prove his identify as requested was the best way to end at the police station.

Gates mishandled the situation.
1st he should have stayed inside but by the door in view of potential witnesses.
2nd he should have quietly shown his ID, then warmly thanked the policeman for his diligence, shaked his hand and say goodbye as if clueless.
If the policeman was just doing his job, he would have left pleased.
If he was being racist, he'd have left livid.
Either way a win win situation for Gates. Instead he is being portrayed as a bozo and his documentary is gonna flop.

Your right. I realize this was during the day. The neighbor should have known who it was unless they have terrible eyesight. One thing I will mention and that is the professor was not in a good mood.
