I love this idea, think about all those moms out there who could really deal with the kids not having to worry about driving. Also, there would be an end to DUI's in the USA, if that's not worth having these cars moving on our American roads I don't know what is.
It would be cool to watch a DVD with a snack at hand all the way home from work or even take a nap. Now that would be a dream come true for most hard working Americans.
We all need to push to get this car on the road and fast.
I don't drive. It's pretty much ruined my life, so I hope one day before I am dead, and I still have a little bit of life left in me, these things come out so maybe I can finally start to live a little. *cue in violin* :-(
@togab0y Aw, come on, man/woman/boy/girl/sir/ma'am/any other way you would like being addressed! I made a dumb joke about a similarly geeky television show. I could have said it was "fake and gay" or any number of other, usually misspelled slurs. Let me have my idiotic fun. Please? If you want a real opinion, I don't see the point of Google making self-driven cars. In fact, I see no point in self-driven cars, but saying all of that isn't any fun.
@Hadreleii Can I have your addy so I can send you that tardis, so that the rest of us can have this wonderful new self driving car. Think about an end to DUI's and allowing those people who worked a overnight shift to nap on their way home with out falling alseep behind the wheel and kill others on the road.
Think about the greater good these car could do and stop thinking about yourself.
You know you can also drive this car if you choose so it works both ways;
@greatshebear Believe me; I know I've made a stupid joke. It is indeed a stupid joke that sounds very self-centered, though I didn't mean it in that way. Self-driving cars have their merits, but they do make me a little leery having technology drive something, even if drunk drivers are just as much of a hazard. I really hope that, if this ever becomes the norm, people still know how to drive in case something goes wrong. I apologize for offending you.
@Hadreleii No problem. Its just that I've been joking about having a car like this for years and here it is.
I agree people should know how to drive even if these car do know how to drive themselves.
As far as it becomeing a normal way of gettng around town, I sure hope it does.
One day I will be too damn old to drive myself around and it would be great to know that my car can be programed to take me where I want to go without having to depend on anyone else.
I want to see it doing platooning, 1 google car in the lead doing what it normally does, 3 or 4 google cars tailgating really close together, as close as possible, if the tires are good then their instant reaction times should allow just a few inches between them.
finally human invented robot now a auto drivin car? human life's now soooo lazy i think in the future robotics will rule the world.anyway two word left.... KNIGHT RIDARRR!
And now to promote the year 2214... The Google Walkitself! Never walk again let the google walk-it bot do it for you... americas gonna turn into that wall-e movie
hackers will need a connection to the car its self, if all it does with its connection if it has one is send and receive information to global positioning satellites with an encrypted connection i don't see a fear in hackers, i how ever see a fear in corrupt memory causing the system to crash and component failure. You would also need a few backup systems and systems that check the current system in use for errors.
Here is my Brother in Turkey/Ankara. He invented Intelligent Gear Box Driverless Train. Take a look. "you need close the gap between the w's when you paste on address bar. and select English.
Apparently, the choice was made because of the fuel efficiency of Toyota Prius. A Prius would provide way more mpg on highway than most other cars, allowing Google authorities to conduct the test for longer time periods.
So i guess the Terminator movies were real. Google is Skynet, and is now building self controlled robots. Can't imagine how the world will turn to in a couple of years, with Google.
I'm ecstatic that the technology has finally reached this level of sophistication, but I can't help but fear that someday, when driverless cars are commonplace, governments will probably make them mandatory, and insurance companies will charge you out the ass if you make the choice to NOT utilize the driverless option. A lot of people take therapeutic enjoyment from driving, and I hope they don't get left in the lurch.
A very good option in my opinion would be to let people drive, but as soon as the computer detects that a crash is within seconds away it would take over.
I want it to be 100% fully auto driver and no man required at all so that we can use it
1)To send just car for laundry, dropping and picking kids for school, getting groceries etc .We need not go
2) remove all controls such as brake padel, steering, excel, gare rad, glass etc and should accomodate more than 8 persons to sleep in 2 levels .inside it shud look like room and contains engine, controller and wheels
that technology is clearly flawed. it wasnt even in the middle of the lane. it was swerving around. screw google for endangering innocent drivers with this unready technology
@ShadeRange2007 You can easily program enough safety into it that it would slow down and not crash if there is a malfunction. This technology is very feasible. There is a group at my university that is working on a blind driver car. This stuff is great.
christ, if people keep at like they are today, the future of driver less car will go the way of the futuristic dream atomic American of the 50s and 60s...the way of the dodo bird.
if we keep on bitching about this, the gov will kill this innovation with so much red tape!
if we let google have their ways among other companies, drivers will be mostly obsolete in 50 years!
Yes, but how will they be writing us tickets? The most important purpose of ticketing is to take our money. With these cars cities budgets will starve! LOL.
Call me crazy, but I completely trust these cars. You know the lawsuits Google'd face if they weren't completely safe? These things are being invented by geniuses, and they're the way of the future. The only accident that's come of these cars is a human driver rear ending one at a stop light.
We will probably never become contained blobs of protoplasm administered to by AI devices. Maybe it's inevitable. Now you can get really toasted and not have to worry about being dangerous. It's just some groundbreaking new stuff. Who knows what'll come of it?
It would be all fine and dandy until someone hacks your car or something and sends you barreling into a wall or pylon at 100mph. Also you could have a malfunction like with the electronic accelerator on Toyotas, wouldn't that be just hunky dory. Guess it would be good for assassinations access the driver controls via satellite and send the cars occupants to a fiery death... Do I don't think I want an automatic driver.
@hiiamtwyg I doubt you have the cognitive capacity, to even begin to do so. Why do I say that? Because clearly you do even have enough intelligence to grasp even the most basic of concepts. Read my reply to skybluesky I had to explain it out for him too.
Do you people even comprehend what you read? Yes I know I had one type on the last sentence but shesh.......
@skybluesky No, don't you ever ask questions instead of taking things at face value. I think I raised valid concerns... Would the system be vulnerable to hacker attacks? Three valid points that went way above your head apparently, you were to focused on the rhetoric instead of the content of my last post.
@captinseperoth There are a wide range of things that could cause problems with this type of technology. Electromagnetic interference, Geomagnetic storms, Solar Flares, Damaged circuitry from the normal heating and cooling of your car or humidity, are just a few things that can cause electronic components to go bad or become damaged and malfunction. I repair electronics, a damaged resistor or a blown capacitor and they quit working right it doesn't take much.
