I think the best way to explain why time seems to accelerate is because when you're young, a year is a large percentage of your life. However, when you're in your 70s or 80s, that percentage is much smaller. You don't see a year as being a long time when you've experienced 70 of them.
I think time feels as though it accelerates more as time passes because memory degrades more and more as we age.
