however, i reckon if the emperor becomes a warp god it could be a good thing. he might not become evil.

i mean each of the chaos gods aren't necessarily evil, its just that they are the physicalish representations of the various emotions of mortal. like Khorne represents violence and anger but also marshal pride and honour, and tzeentch represents hope and ambition. the emperors power may come from 'good' emotions rather than 'bad' ones,

AFAIK, militant monk orders - Teutons for instance - got copied and readjusted in the fantasy genre. That's the inspiration behind paladins. 'Course, paladins have a tendency to be roleplayed as Lawful Stupid instead of Lawful Good, so the concept greatly mutated after its invention. Warhammer (the original medieval-ish fantasy game) was then reinvented in a space setting => Wh40k.
