He's got a point about Michael Jackson records, I never really noticed but go put some headphones on and listen to ANY of his songs -- even streamed from a compressed YouTube vid they're sonically amazing....
I always wanted to get into recording but could never afford the school or the gear. I'm SO glad I never got into that business. Hardly anyone that spent their years and money on their recording career is making money. Not when Garageband or Logic is available. What used to cost millions of dollars in gear, studio space and hired engineers can be done on a laptop by a kid in his bedroom. And the software will only get more powerful.
As a home recording engineer, I am sure without a doubt that I will never stop learning. I am depending on that little flame inside me that knows it will always get better and easier. I appreciate this video in so many ways. Thank you for your insight. I always look to people like yourself who are experienced and are there to help us.
from what i have learned its not what you use but how you use it (considering producing) as far as artists and reputation.... it aint what you know but who you know..... why do you think lil wayne is famous? ive heard amazing songs from studios in Austin Texas that should have gotten radio play long before all of this other shit thats on the radio
The main issue is nobody is willing to pay for recording anymore. Everyone expects recording to be free, or close to it. Try to make a living when you get paid either nothing, or $5/hr which is essentially the same thing. Recording Engineering is a dead profession. Any money spent on those bogus 'recording institutes' is money flushed down the drain. You will never, ever, make any significant income from it. useless
Ouchies. Spend (IDK what?!?!? 50 grand?) End up spending a life time paying off the loan? Yikez! How about a little ambition, and intelligence to pursue your dream with what's available on the internet? Spend your 50K on equipment, and two years researching your dream. You'll surely come out ahead! At least you can sell the equipment if you change your mind. Can't sell your college degree. Key word is "initiative." I don't care what you do in life. If you don't have that. You're worthless.
I used to be a recording engineer. Used to. Here's why I don't do it anymore. $5/hr. Try to make a living at $5/hr. That's what it works out to once I factor in time I don't get paid a cent for but working anyway. I have 20 years experience, an even dozen gold albums, hundreds of credits. The truth is this: studios do NOT hire recording engineers. They are all freelance, and making pocket change. Live sound is the only place to make a buck, and it's a pittance.
I want to attend the art insitutes and take the audo prduction program they have there. It's not a recording engineer school, they teach a lot of diffrent art forms. And they teach all the standrads the recording industry recquires.
Totally agree with areuter727. Every town in North America with a population over, like, 50 people has a 'recording engineering institute'. They all follow the same pattern. They want TONS of YOUR money (because nobody can make any money actually making recordings anymore), there are no serious prerequisites (because they want your money), you get a worthless 'qualification' if you can call it that, then you find out there isn't a single job in the entire world for recording engineers.
Whatever you do, do not spend thousands on a recording school. I agree with @areuter727 I used to be a professional audio engineer as well. And I have heard some Bruce Swedien stories ...
Want to know where the money is in audio engineering?
Audio engineering schools. Yep. And software development for the home studio user. People would rather buy a few thousand dollars worth of gear than spend the same on recording in a studio. Everyone's listening on their sh*tty iPod earbuds anyway so does quality really matter much?
I am a paid engineer but I usually only have occasional weekend or weeknight gigs. Not much...it's a barren land.
People - The value of a recording engineer in today's job market is exactly this ZERO.
There are no longer any jobs for recording engineers, anywhere in the world, that pay enough to live (poorly) from. Nothing. Opening up your own studio will make you poor, and then what?. Studio time goes for $50/hr now. How the hell can you pay your gear, utilities, rent and have anything left over? Stay away from Recording Engineering unless you want to be broke and miserable.
So many young record producers today made their money in drug sales and then moved into the recording industry and have made millions. People like Cash money millionaires of Cash money records were able to funnel that money from drugs into a business. While decent people who have never broken the law have never been able to break into this industry. It has been my dream to own my own recording studio to make other people's dreams come true. @freedomatwhatprice Research Sun Studio in Memphis. You could build a studio like that for a very low investment. Some of the greatest music ever recorded came from tiny studios like this. @freedomatwhatprice You have to consider though that those people grew up in difficult conditions, and instead of wasting the money they made in the black market they invested into something legitimate which is the smart thing to do. It was a bad example. Should of known you wouldn't get it. My poin't was that I'm a freak of nature, by known standards, and ultimately I ended up with an offset of about 10 years between my mind and my acctual age. My ultimate point was that I've already learned 95% of it but everyone wants a fucking degree. It's all fucked up like you.
My advise would be to choose a different career path, I've tried everything for the last decade to break into this business and I can tell you that its reserved for the extreamly 'lucky' few, it will only make you depressed, as will trying to ever afford pro audio gear for a decent home studio.
Do different recording studios do it very much different from others? For example I have seen where they get the lead singer to sing the same song a bunch of times and then they keep the parts that sounded the best. But in addition to that do the also do a lot of voice editing? Or not?
The vocals is just one of many tracks recorded and rerecorded. They also record the guitars, drums, bass, keys, and anything else seperatly. Everything is recorded solely on seperate, "tracks." Then the editors come into play. They take everything and cut and mix what sounds best together and frankenstien the finished product together then it goes to mastering. This is why some great bands sound like shit when they play live. Every studio and editor can make a different product and sound.
Just put this on our blog. Music school is an option worth checking out. Check out free lesson clips and more about our 'Real Application Training' DVD
this was a really useful video. i'm in high school and i have a home studio set up and i have taught myself how to write and record music quite well and I plan on going to college to further my knowledge in the subject. i'll definitely keep everyhing you said in mind
i think everytin is as important as the ova in the right blend n use of it lik addin an EQ then Compressor u may need to go bak to the other to tweek it. anuva gd fing to do is just do it record as many fings as u can n learn on the way
Wow! That was a great discussion. I really want to learn how to record. I have a nice DP studio, but I can't afford a private music/technical school (like Digital Expressions in Emeryville CA). I've been surveying books and DVDs that are available. Any advice?
i think you have not understood the topic! the man in this video is talking about sound engineers! what are you talking about? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
In analog consoles, it is completely true. In digital, it is present but not to a point where it matters. Any turn of an EQ knob changes the phase. Say you're lazy and you don't want to adjust the mic placement and you start cranking EQ knobs, you're going to have a phase shift.
He's so right on the money. Bruce Swedien's recordings are incredibly transparent considering their age and the level of both analog & digital sounds used.
More people need to give Michael Jackson his props, he hears things that no one can hear or pay attention to. Bruce Swedien brings it all out beautifully.
I studied audio engineering at an academy. There's lots of duties.. whether it's mixing, setting up equipment, talking to artists, or whatever. But if you want to record at home, it's relatively easy. Just get an AD converter interface, microphones, keyboard, guitar, Audio Editing software, MIDI software and you can make music right away :)
Having musical experience does help quite a lot. It's not a necessity but it helps. About 1/3 of the guys in my class played instruments.
Doing a course can be expensive. Depends on what avenue you want to get into when you've finished s well - 1 year of studying for the basic recording of artists as opposed to 3 years (Masters Degree) performing acoustic treatment on large buildings.
this guy is amazing

EQ EQ EQ EQ EQ... So very important! I cannot believe he didn't mention it.

EQ isn't so important if your mic placement is good
tylersherrill7 2 years ago
Mic placement is important, but EQ is still very important.
DeadBabyJesus 2 years ago
Mic placement is key. Only use the EQ if you absolutely have to. Messing with the EQ can bring about phase problems.

Absolutely wrong.

In analog consoles, it is completely true. In digital, it is present but not to a point where it matters. Any turn of an EQ knob changes the phase. Say you're lazy and you don't want to adjust the mic placement and you start cranking EQ knobs, you're going to have a phase shift.

Cool videos in your favorites, as well.

No, it's absolutely correct....
EQ causes phase shifting... Especially in midrange frequencies in the heart of your sound...

He's so right on the money. Bruce Swedien's recordings are incredibly transparent considering their age and the level of both analog & digital sounds used.

More people need to give Michael Jackson his props, he hears things that no one can hear or pay attention to. Bruce Swedien brings it all out beautifully.

I have an interest in music so I was wondering what all the duties of an Audio Engineer consist of?
SEAL07 3 years ago
did anyone respond do this question you asked? i was wondering the same thing
hobogun 3 years ago
I studied audio engineering at an academy. There's lots of duties.. whether it's mixing, setting up equipment, talking to artists, or whatever. But if you want to record at home, it's relatively easy. Just get an AD converter interface, microphones, keyboard, guitar, Audio Editing software, MIDI software and you can make music right away :)

Do you need to know any musical experience to get in? eg playing the piano/guitar
cos i only know a lil!
BUT i absolutely love music and was thinking doing a music technology course...
do you think its a good idea ot take the course?
RockStarKimiko88 2 years ago
Having musical experience does help quite a lot. It's not a necessity but it helps. About 1/3 of the guys in my class played instruments.
Doing a course can be expensive. Depends on what avenue you want to get into when you've finished s well - 1 year of studying for the basic recording of artists as opposed to 3 years (Masters Degree) performing acoustic treatment on large buildings.
