I was at this performance I loved it and thought it very good. The only downside was it was like 3 hrs long with no intermission. I think thats why the reviewer didnt like it he couldnt sit still that long
i've never fully read this play, but we are studying the trial, and we have seen the play (dvd version) and the bloke is right when he says Berkoff does things too over the top at times.
However, he doesnt know the reason why Kafka never published his plays. He's not a very good theatre critic lol
This is typical Berkoff, and i can appreciate it. i just dont find the plot too thrilling
THIS PLAY IS AWSOME, Do you know how difficult it is to play. I am studying this play at the moment and the way gregor is played is basicly the ONLY way to portrey Gregor, and if that critic wants to say something bad abiut it i say make him show how he wants it done rather thn bitching on tv about it
While appreciating Baryshnikov's beautiful performance. What bothered me was Stewart Klein's critique of Steven Berkoff's direction. Fortunately the other TV reviews were raves. Like Pia Lindstrom & Joel Siegel. Calling it "Truly Art, an Astonishing Metamorphosis & Incredible Theatre"
This reviewer obviously doesn't get Berkoff's style - what a twat :))) The American cast seem to be doin a stirling job - n Gregor's movements are brilliant - this is a cast that deserve praise not derision from critics who say nothging and say it too loudly - bravo to the cast and crew :)
Thank you so much for your kind reply. -It is so sad that this is not easily available to those of us who would be greatly appreciative. -I believe holding back your (God given) talents is selfish, and a self-damaging act. -If what you say is true about Barishnikov, and his manager,... ... In my opinion, this was a career blunder. I know Barishnikow is a big success with out sharing this with us.. but,. I'm sorry to say this was my first experience (Metamorphosis) with him & my be my last.
The Broadway cast including Berkoff it's director were asked about making a film of the production. Everyone was on board but Barishnikov declined because of negative advice he got from his manager. So, alas the only footage available is what the Lincoln Center Library has in their archives.
I havnt seen this version of metamorphosis, but i had the pleasure of seeing the new version done by lyric and hamerstine... friggng amazing, almost bought me to tears
Berkoff is renown for his feisty temper for those who criticise his work; i.e. death threats to theatre critics. I'd love to know his response to Stewart Klein's review. Watch out Broadway TJ!!
does any1 know any theatre companies (UK only) that have been inspired by Steven Berkoffs work? and r touring or performing? or any of his shows that r being performed? x
Who's the rudeboy in glasses? He's on crack, this is amazing.

This guy obviously isn't acquainted with Berkoff's work. Love him or hate him i think his vision never falters.

Unbelievable that america allows fools like that to appear and review on national television.

That first critic has no clue what he's talking about. He just can't appreciate the alternative theatre that is Metamorphosis.

this critic is an idiot and has no idea about Berkoffs choices in style, the critic is a very ignorant and silly little man.

the critic is a typical american philistine.
