American Medical schools produce less than 20,000 new doctors each year, yet the hospitals in US need 70,000 new doctors every year. 50,000 MDs are recruited from foreign countries. These foreign MDs are cream of the crop from all over the world. For Teri Hatcher to say such things in the script fits the role of an ignorant, desperate Housewife. Also, I think the main issue in this scene was that Susan doubted the doctor had a real diploma. The Phillipines is reknown for crime involving the dishing out of fake diplomas, passports, designer clothing etc.
But even if this wasn't the case, it is still understandable somebody wouldn't particularly trust a doctor with a diploma from an underdeveloped country with high crime rates and such.
How was this racist? Yes it might be a bit insensitive and stereotypical, but it's only because many people view the Philippines COUNTRY (not the race) as poor and underdeveloped (currently a NIC), with high poverty and illiteracy rates. Therefore you would assume that the education isn't particularly good due to a lack of funding, and therefore a diploma from an institution there would not be as prestigious as one from Harvard, Yale etc.

@violetnorton I think the real reason why Filipinos (and the government) complained is because that joke has an economic effect for the medical profession of Filipinos (whose the US/Canada relies on), not because Filipinos were hurt by the stereotype joke.
Filipinos discriminate too. If they have to protest against such comedy line from a single DH scene, there must be a reason outside of being hurt. And I think that that reason is because it is a threat to their profession.

American Medical schools produce less than 20,000 new doctors each year, yet the hospitals in US need 70,000 new doctors every year. 50,000 MDs are recruited from foreign countries. These foreign MDs are cream of the crop from all over the world. For Teri Hatcher to say such things in the script fits the role of an ignorant, desperate Housewife. Until we fix our medical school system, we expect to see 5 out of 7 doctors in our country are from foreign medical schools. Fix our medical schools!

Also, I think the main issue in this scene was that Susan doubted the doctor had a real diploma. The Phillipines is reknown for crime involving the dishing out of fake diplomas, passports, designer clothing etc.
But even if this wasn't the case, it is still understandable somebody wouldn't particularly trust a doctor with a diploma from an underdeveloped country with high crime rates and such.

How was this racist? Yes it might be a bit insensitive and stereotypical, but it's only because many people view the Philippines COUNTRY (not the race) as poor and underdeveloped (currently a NIC), with high poverty and illiteracy rates. Therefore you would assume that the education isn't particularly good due to a lack of funding, and therefore a diploma from an institution there would not be as prestigious as one from Harvard, Yale etc.
