The only thing I can really take away from this speech that might be concrete is the Military going green. Considering our military is the number consumer of oil, it means that reserves will be much greater.
This also has implications if any renewable energy breakthroughs should occur during this transition because normally certain military technologies make it into the public market. In that manner at least we get some form of alternative energy. Just how the for-profits dont ruin it.

But that means there would have been a space for a new car company to spring ahead (and hire more people). Every government solution creates a bigger problem. ALL banks that were 'bailed out' are bankrupt. They are being floated only by Fed loaning them money at 0 and they are turning around to the Treasury for bonds at 2-3%, and once interest rates go above that (and they will) it's over - more bailouts.

The debts of the company were unsustainable, it needed to be liquidated on the market, and I am sure the factories/tools supply chains would have been picked up by other companies CHEAPER while bond holders would have lost SOME money, maybe half, at least the company could be made profitable in the market
@timesplitters333 Instead the actual investors were wiped out, while the unsustainable company was simply nationalised, which means it was a bail out for the auto-union, nothing else, but then there was no restructuring and the debt is still there, the company is completely not viable as a profitable business. Gov't sold the shares to more suckers, of-course there is no difference between Treasury bonds and GM bonds now - all of it is on tax payers shoulders.

Horrible speech by President Obama. He was completely denying the facts of our current economic envirorement and pretended that everything was great and people who doubted America's greatness didn't know what they were talking about.
It's almost like the guy is living in a fantasy world. He didn't talk about any cuts, lowering taxes or pulling the troops home, all he did was mention more ways the federal government could spend money that it doesn't have.

@timesplitters333 GM is bankrupt, the property of theGM bond holders was confiscated, the proceeds were moved into the pockets of the unions, and the entire US automotive industry is now much weaker and GM will go bankrupt again.
ALL banks that were 'bailed out' are bankrupt. They are being floated only by Fed loaning them money at 0 and they are turning around to the Treasury for bonds at 2-3%, and once interest rates go above that (and they will) it's over - more bailouts.

@timesplitters333 False choice. The important company was destroyed by destroying the real investors in it, the company of-course needed to be restructured. Yes, restructured. The debts of the company were unsustainable, it needed to be liquidated on the market, and I am sure the factories/tools supply chains would have been picked up by other companies CHEAPER while bond holders would have lost SOME money, maybe half, at least the company could be made profitable in the market

@timesplitters333 Instead the actual investors were wiped out, while the unsustainable company was simply nationalised, which means it was a bail out for the auto-union, nothing else, but then there was no restructuring and the debt is still there, the company is completely not viable as a profitable business. Gov't sold the shares to more suckers, of-course there is no difference between Treasury bonds and GM bonds now - all of it is on tax payers shoulders.

@timesplitters333 GM is bankrupt under all of that non-liquidated real debt, and the silly people who picked up the new bonds are simply equating the GM bonds with government bonds, and it's true, but both of those types of bonds are worth about the same as paper, just wait a tiny bit for the interest rates to come up and it's in progress. Iran and India are trading oil for gold, China and Russia are using rubbles and renminby soon USD will no longer be 'reserve' currency.

@timesplitters333 USA is in much worse shape than even Greece, after all, Greek debt is tiny, not much bigger than debt of almost any STATE in US, and there is no Germany to bail out US, only Fed, and once nobody wants US dollars, then nobody wants US bonds, and it will unravel.
