@Speegs23, in my opinion, George Moscone and Harvey Milk deserve the kind words that were spoken at this memorial, especially as both Moscone and Milk left a legacy that includes furthering diversity among the city's leaders and in particular furthering the gay rights movement. What unfounded exaggerations are you seeing in these speeches? Also, I'm still not sure if you have anything against gay people, as you didn't exactly answer my question.
It is obvious he had an heir of self importance and self martyrdom to himself and I do not have empathy for a group that tries toy base one's entire identity on who they go to bed with as if they were worthy of special status and treatment.
he was a kook, a murdered kook, but that doesn't justify the train wreck of a life he led, it only provided further tragedy to a tragic existence.
@Speegs23, no person is ever perfect, but no one can deny the good that Harvey Milk did for the gay community or his charisma and courage as a leader of the community and the city. Moreover, gay people are worthy of not special but equal status and treatment, and it is a shame that many people still treat gay people as neither special or equal but inferior and subhuman just because of their sexual orientation.
Are you going to answer my question of if you have anything against gay people?
@Speegs23, I'm still not exactly sure where you stand on homosexuality, which is important for me to know to the point that I prefer clarity over nuance, but I do know arrogance when I see it.
Author Randy Shilts wrote in the Milk biography "Mayor of Castro Street" about Milk's numerous relationships with teenage boys and that Milk also advocated having multiple sexual relationships at one time
A wonderful tribute. Once again, a beautiful response to an outrage. I know this would eventually be told, and the 1984 documentary is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Mark Isham's musical score is hauntingly beautiful with the March down Market, and the trumpets playing during the clip at St. Mary's. We must remember the good that come out of this tragedy. I can only imagine the "eternal bleed" Moscone grown children must endure at knowing the end of their father. Learn from the story!
What an amazing video clip - thank you for putting together - so powerful and so important for every American to see. As a country we need to become more tolerant of eachother including those of us who were born gay, lesbian, bi sexual or transgendered. We waste too much time hating others and it needs to come to an end.
God Bless Harvey Milk and George Moscone - they are now Angels in heaven and ashamed that Prop 8 passed in California.
I normally allow comments to stay as long as they don't come from a place of profanity. That said, I consider the content of this video to warrant a little more respect, and after some careful thought, I will only allow respectful comments relating specifically to the subject matter (as opposed to back-n-forth bickering), and I will review comments for this video going forward. I hope you can understand.
Great video, would like to hear the full speeches by Stuart Milk, Jonathan Moscone and Harry Britt - these speeches will become history too!! THANK YOU SEAN CHAPIN1!!!!
I'm far too young to have ever known Milk or Moscone, but am proud for them. they died fighting for what they believe in. Prop 8 may have passed, but right now there are those fighting to revoke what is a most illegal act and make sure everybody is free.
I had never heard of Harvey Milk until a friend of mine turned me to the movie. I then went to sleep with the thoughts in mind, woke up this morning and researched this entire event. I, as a gay man, am better off today because of strong and brave people such as these. This isnt an issue of orientation, race, color or creed, this is an issue of equality in this Country. How can we invade other countries and claim to want to share our ideals....if we cant even hold them true here at home. Equlity
tyvm for sharing this, wish I'd been there. Almost shaking to see that Carol Silver was there and Willie Brown when White admitted they were also people he wanted to kill :S :(
Shame he got only "manslaughter" for killing two wonderful souls
I am a 38 year old gay man, I only learnt about Harvey last year whilst in San Francisco. Saw the film last night and I feel ashamed that I havent educated myself sooner to the fantastic efforts of people like Harvey. We now live in a society where there is legal acceptance and we have to remember the fight our gay older brothers fought for us. We should teach this at school. Harvey Milk makes me feel so proud.I reccommend all young gay and lesbien people see this film and take notes.
Thank you for posting this! I wasn't aware that it had happened (left the Bay Area almost 20 years ago). Those of us who worked in City Hall at the time of the shootings will never forget either of the two men, the incident, or the experience of watching the outpouring of grief from a devastated city. I'm glad that others remember as well, and can share their memories with those who were too young to have met George Moscone or Harvey Milk. They were both charismatic, exceptional men.
Hi MacToronto - I've posted the entire speeches for most of the speakers at the Memorial on my YouTube Channel. Each of the videos are titled "Moscone Milk Memorial 2008" followed by the speaker's name. Let me know if you have trouble finding them. Thanks!
Sean, my apologies for not taking the time to snoop around before I commented! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for sharing these superb moments. For the thousands who wished they could have been there to share in this event, my deepest thanks and good wishes to you!!
How proud my family is that my cousin Fred P. Hochberg, who made history by being the first openly gay person appointed as a Presidential Cabinet Member (Clinton Admin) and was former co-chair of the National Human Rights Campaign, was chosen by Obama to be one of the seven (so far) LGBT people who are part of the transition team that is helping our future President prepare to take charge of the federal government on his inauguration day.
Young people do know. I'm in middle school, and creating a website for a competition, "National History Day". My topic is Harvey Milk. I've found him to be a very inspirational figure, and I feel that he isn't dead. His spirit lives on through all of America, homosexual or not. :)
Everybody's free 2 feel good Everybody's free Brother & sister Together we'll make it through Some day a spirit will lift U & take U there I know U've been hurting but I've been waiting to B there 4 U & I'll be there just helping U out Whenever I can Oh Oh Everybody's free 2 feel good We R a family that should stand together as 1 Helping each other instead of just wasting time Now is the moment 2 reach out 2 someone Its all up to U When everyone's sharing their hope Then love will win through
Thank you SeanChapin... I'm moved to tears. I was at the Hastings Law Library and cafeteria when Milk/Moscone were shot, and a wave of shock moved through the room, and a number of us headed over to City Hall just when DiFi announced what had happened. It was more terrible than words can convey, and I'm starting to weep uncontrollably as I post this... Thank you again for posting these events...
Bless them both, they MADE a "difference"
I remember that day as if it was yesterday.
RIP Harvey & George

@Speegs23, do you have anything against gay people?

i have great discernment for hubris and conjecture and find it intellectually dubious.

SeanChapin1 2 years ago
I've been quite clear, you need to read.
Speegs23 2 years ago
@Speegs23, being crystal clear means answering a question with a yes or a no so as to no create any confusion.
SeanChapin1 2 years ago
Learn to read, intelligent people have nuanced answers.
You are trying to simply paint people in broad strokes which ironically exposes a prejudice within you.
if you can't clearly read what is written you're going to have a lot of difficulty putting forth a well reasoned argument on any position.

You should know it, since you practice it so readily.
Any thoughtful mind should be able to read quite clearly what is written nothing is in code or spelled out without clarity.
