I was wondering if your Will Rogers Jr. and if you are that would be so great to know because I am a cousin of Will Rogers.I was told by my mom,Mary Lou.I found out alot of stuff on ancestry about the famous Will Rogers. If your not than sorry. Thanks Kim
This is TOTALLY wrong. I know LOTS of farmers and ranchers who have gone broke without borrowing. In fact making a living on a farm is almost impossible these days. So why do you think that only the corporate farmers are making it while producing an inferior product to the family farmers? I believe it is that they have an army of lobbyists with buckets of money to buy the CORPORATE SOCIALISM which rules America today. RAISE taxes on corporations and the rich. They get all the breaks now.
You do know that Rogers was a Democrat, right? You do this one a lot apparently, it's even in the "trailer", but I don't see any of his radio addresses about unemployment and how it's more important than the deficit (Bacon, Beans, and Limousines, October 1931). Just sayin'.
@granitehills2t Are you actually suggesting that Democrats aren't Americans?!? Don't tell me you actually believe that giant, steaming, load of bull****. It seems to me like YOU would rather that our country was run by a single party, like Russia. Are you a communist or an? because only communists want to suppress other political parties by calling them "un-patriotic". Maybe you don't care about the country -- because otherwise you would never suggest such a lie.
@terabyte30 Democrats want to destroy capitalism and implement European style socialism. Your president is all for that idea. Every policy of his has been a stepping stone to that. Healthcare, nationalized auto and banks right up to raising the debt limit. JFK would not recognize your shit party either. Sadly though, Republicans are bought and paid for by corporate interests. I am sorry you dont understand. TEA.
@granitehills2t Oh, I understand. I understand that you want a single party autocracy -- a military dictatorship in which only Tea Baggers rule and the sick, downtrodden poor are cast out & left for dead. As a Democrat and a patriotic American, it's my job to make sure that I vote against tea bagging agendas. Remember the quote that's on the Statue of Liberty? "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." I'm sorry that you don't understand that. COFFEE.
@terabyte30 Yeah thats what I said. You are so bright. (Note *sarcasm*). Your president is seeking the end of America exceptionalism. I am Libertarian and have no aspirations for a military take over or whatever shit you pulled out of your ass. You might want to disinfect your hands after such a disgusting display. Will Rogers speaks of the negative effects of debt. He agrees with the tea party on that. There is a big difference between Democrat- 1925 and the Democommies of today.
@terabyte30 Also, may I suggest you dont use homophobic slurs such as "Teabagger". You must exercise tolerance of other people's sexual preferences. You'd think a "democrat" would know that.
@granitehills2t Hey - newsflash, smart guy (note *sarcasm*) he's YOUR President too, unless you're not an American, and I'm suspecting you're not. If anyone's "display" is disgusting, it's yours for even suggesting that half the American political system are "un-American" - your words, not mine. It absolutely makes me laugh out loud that *you're* getting upset about a perceived "slur" against gay people.
@terabyte30 "Teabagging", while not exclusive to the homosexual community is a homophobic slur. Just as "fudge-packing" and "ass pounding" are homophobic slurs, they are acts possible for heterosexuals to perform. I would suggest you apologize to your local GLAD chapter for your bigotted behavior.
@granitehills2t Umm... wrong. You obviously have no idea what "teabagging" actually means. And just because something is *possible* for homosexual people to perform doesn't mean it's *exclusive* to homosexuals. I suggest YOU apologize to your local GLAD chapter for assuming it is. That's profiling and obviously you are the bigot here.
@granitehills2t Also - I have no idea what your sex life is like, but if you had one you *might* know that no one ever EVER said teabagging is something only gay people do. That just shows me how YOU think, as a person. Sad. As far as what Will Rogers believed, watch "Bacon, Beans and Limousinges" before you say anything else intolerant. There's NO difference at all between his Democratic party and the American Patriotic Democrats of today.
@granitehills2t As Will Rogers said, "There's not really but ONE problem before the whole country at this time. It's not the balancing of the budget.... It's not the silver question. The only problem that confronts this country today is at least 7,000,000 people are out of work. That’s our only problem. It's to see that every man that wants to is able to work, is allowed to find a place to go to work, and also to arrange some way of getting a more equal distribution of the wealth in country."
@granitehills2t Will Rogers was right. There ain't NO OTHER PROBLEM than getting people back to work and, as he said, "if you can't give ‘em a job why the next best thing you can do is see that they have food and the necessities of life". That's what President Obama has been trying to do. And if that takes spending a little extra money to get us back on our feet, well that's what it takes. I do think he loves this country. Why would ANYONE subject themselves to being president if they didn't?
@terabyte30 Uhhh, Rogers said employment was more important than debt. OBAMA's UNEMPLOYMENT rate continues to rise!!!! HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT and HIGH DEBT!! Rogers was clearly frustrated at that time, but his other musings clearly define his opposition to debt. At least FDR had "shovel-ready" jobs. Obama pays corporations and lobbyists with "stimulus". Obama will not stop spending money. I am not sure that he cares and the Democrats root him on. Thus, I believe Anti-American.
@granitehills2t Over 4 million jobs were lost during the Bush administration, before President Obama even took office. He inherited one hell of a mess from Bush. Obama has been fighting tooth and nail to do what it takes to get Americans back to work, but large corporations are sitting pretty on their massive insane tax breaks thanks to Republican spending through the tax code, and see no reason to hire right now. It's the Republican Congress, rich people, and corporations who are Un-American.
@terabyte30 Obama is as big corporation as Bush. GE is just one example of that. Obama himself admitted that the "shovel-ready" jobs were a joke. The stimulus has done nothing. OBAMA will not cut spending and has yet to end the war in Iraq and created a new war in Libya. Predator drones and bombs cost money. He will not stop spending, and when the Dems had both houses they spent even more money.
@granitehills2t God, don't you people ever let up? It's the same old whine over and over and over "Blah blah blah Obama spending" blah blah. Ok - what's he spending on exactly? WHAT is he "spending"? On the American people? On trying to stimulate the economy? On Afghanistan, cleaning up what Bush couldn't? What is he spending that Bush didn't spend a million times over? Bush inherited a balanced budget and ran us into the ground, and you're blaming Obama for that?!?
@terabyte30 If you are looking for me to defend Bush, I wont. He is as responcible for our problems as anyone, but that does not mean Obama is right. What can Obama cut you ask? Oh perhaps bring the boys home from Iraq, and Libya. He can get the federal government out of the student loan business and all lending together. He could veto any pork barrel spending. End subsidies for Brazilian Petrobras oil. Fix all entitlements, and that means to make social security a "lock box" again.
@terabyte30 And to continue. Cut Department of Education, focusing on No Child Left Behind. Cut programs in the Pentagon, especially outdated military contracts. Department of Energy? Cut in half. Streamline the USDA, Game and Fish, and NASA. End Planned Parenthood at Federal Level. Eliminate Obama care. End all overseas spending and focus only on American problems. Once the budget is balanced and on the right track you could bring some spending back, but not until the country is fixed.
I wandered through a Goodwill, and found a copy of Will Rogers' Illiterate Digest. It appears to be the true first edition, and rare, but not commanding much money. I'm about 100 pages into it. I was so happy I turned to the younger person behind me at the cash to tell him what I'd found, AND HE KNEW WHO WILL ROGERS WAS too.
Hey man, thanks alot for this- I'm a die hard American and it's amazing to me that wisdom of Will Rogers is so often overlooked in guiding this land of ours.
Terrific... thanks for dropping a comment. Nice to have a blood relative of my hero pay me a visit. Sadly Will is dropping through the cracks of history. You would think it would be so with how pertinent his comments are to today's events but the public has very little sense of history and few know who he was. Best to you and your Dad. Ciao!
In either the most recent or second most recent issue of Harper's there are bit from an address Will Rogers when someone mistakenly put him in front of what is believed to have been a conference full of bankers. Let us say that he was somewhat frosty to them, upbraiding them in no uncertain terms for their pilferage.
I haven't seen the Harper's article but if this is the speech that starts out "Ladies and gentlemen, honored guests, loansharks and interest hounds. I've addressed every form of organized graft in the U.S. except for congress, so naturally it's a pleasure for me to appear before the biggest." That speech was one he gave to the banker's convention in 1922. Actually they had invited him and he roasted them just as he did in subsequent years when they kept asking him back. Thanks for your comment.
The one I have is close, and may be a repeat engagement for the same folks. Mine is from 1923 and begins, "Loan sharks and interest hounds, I have addressed ever form of organized graft in the United States, excepting Congress, so it's naturally a pleasure for me to appear before the biggest."
It is included in The Papers of Will Rogers, Volume Four.
Interesting Zach. It is likely he delivered it in 1922 and it got documented in his papers in 1923. We're sort of both right most likely. It is definitely the same speech.
I think I'm going to read the excerpts from the Harper's article I have sometime soon on my channel, but I will continue to look for your (I'm sure) far superior rendition of the same.
Great sense of reality that Will Rogers, it was the time before the credit-cards(probably). Now you see everybody drawing their credit-card to buy whatever they want but is it backed by hard cash, even worse,do these folks check their accounts now and then? Guess not, that would be too scary, great Stuff,Vic.
There's only one guy talking sense in this country - Dr. Ron Paul. I'm going to send you a link to him talking about the bail out. I'm sure it will interest you. Thanks Victor. There are some of us in this country that aren't nuts. I'm sure much of Europe is scratching their heads wondering how we let ourselves get into this mess. We're a great country with a lot of good people but there is a reckoning coming if we don't learn from our history the lessons that Will Rogers understood so well.
I am so glad to hear from Will Rogers again since I last saw him last fall in Syracuse with the Retired Teachers Association of NY State. I hope to hear from him often! Thank you Archtopbrownie.
Yes, it is word for word Will Rogers. I haven't doctored it at all. But a couple of the later comments came from 1931 and 1934. It would be too confusing to explain all that but that is the model I used in writing my book. "On the Road with Will Rogers." I took what Will said on these subjects throughout his career and, as long as they were consistent, I pieced them together. Will rarely contradicted himself. Unlike many public figures today. Thanks for the good question.
