The 88mm FlaK gun has its origins from the first world war. Intended to be used as an anti aircraft gun again in the second world war, it was discovered that it made a damn fine anti tank gun. One of the most versatile artillery pieces of the war.

Typical brilliant move regarding the use of armor to lure the British into a trap. Those "big guns" were most likely 88's. One of the most feared and respected artillery guns in WWII. Thanks RT for another great interview.

@MrDavkoz Rommel was the inventor of these ambushes I think-----putting up 88 guns in a suitable area,well behind the front.. An attack on the British line in force,this attack will be destroyed,the Germans will turn and run------and any commander knows that a fleeing enemy is no1 chance of succesfull counter-attack,ofc using armour..Pity the German troops that makes the inatial attack,they dont know the grand plan----they just attack,as ordered..

That had to be hard for all parties involved that was part of a tank crew. Brutal inside tempertures, cursed sand everywhere, fleas, & death.
