Great song, good recording from that period, thanks for posting. Need to bring back some acid tests, everything is too corporate factory ready made. I sure missed those early blues / Pigpen influenced songs.
god i always loved cold rain and snow, especialy the early versions! i love how pig pen plays the organ in cold rain in snow, just pure epicness.this reminds me of driving to my grandparents with my dad when i was five, my dad out on a 66 show and we jammed the whole way there
Pig Pen was all they needed as an organist. Too bad they kind of diminished his role in the years to come but his performances on the live shows was always a highlight of their sets.
It's from Grateful Dead Live at Fillmore Auditorium on 1966-11-19. Also aweful is "pain in my heart' and specially ' The same thing'. For me the best show was
Live at Carousel Ballroom on 1968-02-14, This show has been commercially released as "Road Trips Vol 2.2" Unlucky for me, because I always listened to this show by streaming with archive.org. It's difficult to buy cd's in Holland from GD. Special the old one's.

After I tripped twice i found out I allways liked to be treated like i was left with snow!!!! why did you, girl, go? did you know something i should've known? or was it me left to an evening all alone? Why great woman why did you decide to go? Was i nothing, or just another means to an end?
How come the LP Version stars off with well she's Coming down the stairs combing back her yellow hair ? DId the Dead reverse the song for their Debut?
Really like this sound, the organ is great. This is garage punk to me! Love those vintage instruments! thanx for posting, I'll search for more 60's dead.
@JasonTryp Ive got an album of the Grateful Dead preforming at Avalon on my iphone witch all the songs they did and also got a Warlocks album before they called them selfs the Grateful Dead and its rreally good
You could say Pigpen was underrated--along with Weir--all right! Both of them were virtually fired around 67-8 for not pulling their weight in the band. I'm not a professional musician, but I can't see that any of the others were any greater shakes at this time.
The two overcame their devastating on-the-job Performance Reviews by verbal promises and follow-through--but also by just continuing to show up at the gigs anyway!
@iunnodiapeys Exactly. They both promised to work harder and do better at the "Performance Review", but it's not clear to me whether the band then said, OK, we'll give you another chance to turn it around, OR if it was more a case of them just turning up to play anyway even though it wasn't clear they were wanted. In the end, though they were accepted back into the band however it happened.
Yeah! Right! Pig did have that whirling swirling thing going on. Love it .Worked great - he was waaay underrated as a musician. Mostly known for his vocals, ya know?
This is my favorite song and version of CR&S. Phil Lesh was my biggest inspiration. Saw him at the Grand Ballroom in '67, and he just blew me away. Not sure if many know, but I've read that he is a natural born perfect pitch. Very handy for a bass player. Those low notes are hard to hear when you are playing live on stage.
It's from Fillmore Auditorium on November 19, 1966 wit a bluesy Pigpen and with the psychedelic playing style of Jerry. Oh my god, there 're still amazing great. Pain in my heart.
Now this is how I remember the tune when I saw them three times one weekend in MI in 1967. Twice at the Grande and down in Ann Arbor free in the park. Phil Lesh absolutley mesmerized me the entire time.
i hate it slow. i love these early ones so much.

The Grateful Dead could have (and maybe should have) stopped after about 1967.They were amazing, up to that time.

sounds like bill graham at the begining. is it? was the filmore around in 66?
kapila013 2 years ago
I'm sure it is Bill Graham and if it's not the Filmore then it's another venue that Graham ran before that, perhaps the Avalon.

Nothing like the Dead, especially with Pigpen. No one repleaced his style.

Pig utterly rocked the organ on the studio version of Cream Puff War.
Pithecanthropus2483 2 years ago
Hey, I agree. Why they brought in other musicians on organ/keyboards during Pigpen's lifetime baffles me.
