thank you so much, my mustang has been downshifting weird for years because of this and i just went and did what you said, its fixed,it had some pull on it and it would downshift abruptly, what i mean by downshift is when i go to stop after going 55 or higher, couldn't believe it was this simple, thanks again.
Hi, Im putting a AOD in a 68 mustang.. does the electric plug have to be plugged up? or is that just for the overdrive? If it does have to be hooked up, how can that be done? Please respond soon. Thank you
@extreme383 The AOD has no electrical connections to the overdrive or any other internal component. I would say, the plug your talking about is the neutral safety and backup light switch. You will need to wire the safety switch into your cars starter system.
Seeing that this is about a 5 year old video they have updated the nylon bushing part shown on the first linkage that the cable goes through. You can order this part from 50resto.com part #7303A for all my fellow Mustang guys out there! Happy downshifting!
@Restaurant25 That 50resto brass and clip part is really on old Ford replacement part used in a short run recall from the late 80's to replace the high failure rate black bushing. It brass version works fine and so does the new nylon bushing that 50resto also sells (same as the Ford E0AZ-7F330-A) used in the video.
@BadShoeProductions Sounds good, I'm actually getting the brass bushing tomorrow. I hate how it just bogs down in 2nd after it shifts. That cable does more than I thought it ever would. Example at how it makes the transmission shift. I've noticed a difference with it disconnected, but yea thanks for the video. I'm sure it helps out alot of people with this problem.
Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately the mechanic is not sure what the part is. Chilton's shows some nuts and a cotter pin holding the cable to the shifter, which it would appear to me any shop would have, but Ford faxed the shop a diagram showing something completely different, like a barrel the cable would go through. Your video shows a plastic doo-hickey at the shifter end that doesn't look like either. Just trying to figure out what's suppose to be there and what to call it.
@danpetitpas What are you working on, the TV or shifter cable. The shifter cable is not in the video at all. The video only shows the TV cable which has nothing to do with the shifter.
I wonder if you can help me. The shifter on my 88 Mustang with the 5.0L engine came loose and my mechanic tried to fix it. He said a clip had rotted off that held the shifter cable to the shifter. He called everywhere and couldn't find this clip. He rigged something up, but said it was a temporary fix. Chilton's shows some nuts and a cotter pin holding it on. A diagram he got from Ford shows something different. Where can I get this clip? Thanks.
I could really use some help with my mustang tranny..it shifts great through first and second but just stays in second ...no matter how much or little throttle..any ideas? anybody? I have tried to mess with the TV cable to no avail..please help..
my car didnt have a tv bushing and i drove on it for a few months.....it started slipping and i found i needed a bushing, so i put one in. now its slipping a little again...do u think i need to rebuild the whole transmission or just replace a torque converter or something?
@BadShoeProductions thanks a bunch. i overhauled the transmission and now my 88 grand marquis gets much better gas milage and rides like a charm. however do u know where the speedometer cable goes? u do not know how to locate it? it slipped off the trans and now my speedometer doesnt work
BadShoeProductions - help me! OK - solve this one: I broke the plastic gommet/end piece that hooks the TV cable to the throttle body on the TRUCK version..(ie double butterfly valves) where can I find this plastic piece or a replacement and can it be put on WIHTOUT reinstalling a whole new TV cable? I just broke the damn plastic end piece, theres gotta be a way right??
@djhivesdotcom Frankly, the cable is no longer available from Ford so a junkyard is about the only place to find one. I don't know of any repair end parts.
Thanx - I found one in a junk yard last week, sitting right there looking at me... it was like magic. It was sitting on the passenger seat in perfect condition, brakets and all... I couldnt have had a better day. I installed it like YOU said - not loose - not tense, and the truck runs PERFECT - fank you!
Im in the process of designing a aftermarket cable myself - I cannot believe the crater of a hole for this market.
PS - fyi the plast end from a Jeep Cherokee fits perfectly on the AOD TB. However theres no room to cut that cable and fashion a new cable stop - I cut my cable, put on the jeep end piece (plastic) and the cable ended up being too short! DOH! great vids!
@BadShoeProductions so i have in my possession a factory TV cable for an 88 f-150 Custom, and do you know anywhere i can retrieve installation instructions?
what kinds of adjustments to the TV cable need to be made if the car has a harsh, or late downshift? my mustang started having this symptom after an engine replacement. if i coast to a slower speed the engine will shift properly, but if i brake, it seems like the transmission doesnt have enough time to downshift and it shifts harshly, this only seems to happen from 2 to 1, right before the car is at a stop. i think the problem is TV cable related since it started after the new engine
@tippman2k01 If the cable is too tight, the upshift will be late and harsh. A loose cable will cause early-soft shifts and if too loose, slipping and possible clutch damage. If the cable becomes unhooked from the throttle linkages, very often, the clutches will burn up.
From one tech to another, this is just fantastic. I am really good at electrical diagnosis, but Automatic transmissions are Voodoo to me. Are these as critical as the TV cables on GM vehicles? Can the TV cable be used to tailor WOT upshift points? I would like WOT upshifts to occur at about 3,600 RPM instead of 4,000 on my F-150 because I have a 300ci six, which is not a rev happy engine.
@dborrelli74 The TV cable is not used for WOT shift points. Mods to the governor and/or valve body is needed for WOT adjustment. I have no idea about GM tranny adjustments.
hey can this be the reason my gas pedal is so far in(deep) ...i checked my throttle valve cable and it has a zip tie inplace of the bushing .....any help? ..i just want my gas pedal back where it should be ..its hard to drive like this with the pedal so far in
I have a ford 93 club wagon with an AOD and I got to say it sux. nothin but trouble. and I can seem to find an adjustment for any internal clutch or band any body got a clue as to why this thing would slip ?
so i have resently put a aod in my 1990 f150 xlt lariet that had an e40d...the pump stoped working but any ways is that the same adjusment for a 351w bcz its working but its taking a while for it to go into gear as soon as u start it after leaving it for a while...i was thinking it was the filter but it could just be the tv cable
@BadShoeProductions so ive been told that the clutch bands may be dried up a bit bcz the trans sat for probley 2 weeks with no fluid what so ever.....so i was told to run some transmedic through it and it will work fine
I have two cars, a 1992 Crown Victoria and a 1992 Grand Marquis. My Vic's AODE is slipping at 3/4 to full throttle at higher rpm. I did a filter, torque converter drain, and new atf, which did not help it. I parted out my Grand Marquis for a demo car, and the motor and trans worked great on that car, the car itself had issues. The grand marquis was made in late 1991 so it has the AOD. Both cars have the 4.6L. HERE IS MY QUESTION: Will I be able to bolt the AOD into the Crown Victoria?
@aboomanation Not likely, the AOD and that 4.6L will have a small block bolt pattern and the other AODE/4.6L should have the newer 7 bolt mod. bolt pattern which is different.
i have a 96 vic 4.6 i cut my cats off and it sounds like a mustang 2 months later it started to drive funny it felt like the motor was straining so i took it to the dealership and they changed my maf sensor it did fix the straining problem i got the power back but now when it hits third gear it bogs and looses some power and fourth gear bogs even more if i get on the gas it still bogs so i let up off the gas and get on it and it picks up speed then it bogs back down
What would cause my 91 Mustang GT AOD not want to shift right from 4 to 3 and 3 to 2 when coming to a stop. If I try to come to a stop with the gear selector in OD then the RPMs bogg way down to around 500rpms and stays there for a couple secs then when the car finally stops it disengages and kicks the rpm up to 1k then back to normal idle.
i have a 90 crown vic and it is not shifting into 3rd gear, the motor just revs when i hit about 40 and i would have to wait until the speed goes down and it goes back into second before the transmission engages again. this is the second transmission i put into the car, first original did the same thing and i am wondering if it is the cable your talking about or the actual transmission.
Well, the direct clutch or inner shaft is gone so it's overhaul time. Yes, a TV cable not being adjusted can cause a low pressure shift which can burn out a clutch.
I have no idea, you'll have to take a look or go to a repair shop to diag. the problem. Sometimes two Torx head screws that hold the cable lever to the shift tube come loose causing a poor park engagement.
What is the maximum RPM to hold a shift for by tightening the TV cable, using a stock AOD and 302 motor? Would a shift point of 3500 RPM be outside of the optimum power band? Thank you.
Normally, the TV adjustment will not change WOT shift rpm. Most stock valve body/governors will allow 4K upshifts. Higher WOT upshifts can be made if mods are done to the valve body and gonernor.
Is there any benefit to using this method rather than allowing the self adjusting function of the cable locking mechanism to take up the cable slack automatically by holding the TV control lever against it's idle stop position in neutral? Thank you.
hello i bought a b&m shifter for my 89 mustang and i cant remove the gear lever from the transmission, is there a certain way that i have to remove it?
Where do I find the video on rebuilding the Ford AOD that you mention? I have an '84 Mustang GT 5.0 with shift problems. Already tried TV rod adjustment and I'd like to see if it can be fixed in the valve body instead of replacing the trans.
I have a 93 mustang, AOD. Since I bought it Aug 2008, shifting from P to D. would take up to 10 seconds to engage. Since then has gotten worse. Deployed now so I dont use the car, but would like insight to fix it. Last drive, it wouldnt shift into any forward gear and just revved. Then once I reved it hard and it caught, hard, then a few miles away same thing. Sounded like a slip and lost forward drive. Had to drive home in reverse. was only 1/2 mile away. please help.
hey man can you help me figure something out???? i have a 1988 5.0L Ford Bronco with a AOD transmission on it. The 4x4 works fine. The problem with my AOD transmission is that it wont shift out of 1st gear!! i dont know what the problem is...could it be this??????
My AOD is older model, and does not use TV cable... it oses mechanic link rod connected to carb. Do you think i can fabricate a rod for my AOD and carb?? using copper pipe...? can connect it directly point to point (carb-trans)??
Actually i'm using my car (LTD LX) and i have fixed the transmission shift controller in one position... Fixed in one position could damage my trans???
Setting the TV lever in a single position is not the way to go. Carbs were used on many early AOD trucks and Crown Vic's. The problem is with the carb link. Some aftermarket companies make those links. The adjustment is pretty much the same as an EFI. With a closed thottle, the rod should not have tension or looseness.
Thank you so much. The mechanics at Aamco messed this step up when they rebuilt my 91 Thunderbird's AOD trans, and I kept bringing the car back because I just knew that something was wrong. A friend of mine told me to adjust the throttle cable, and I looked up your video. The car runs so much smoother with that cable adjusted properly.
I think I might buy your video because the transmission still isn't fixed correctly, and Aamco refuses to admit that my problems are transmission related.
Learning from a PROFESSIONAL ROCKS! I have a 1971 Bronco and I bought it with a 93 302 EFI with a four speed, I then bought a AOD had it rebuild w/ a wide range gear set and advance adapters to a dana 20 transfer case, however I am having some install problems, I have a Art car shifter and now I need a tv cable and i cant find a stock, Lokar i called and they say i would need there shifter cable, braket, throtle linkage, and kickdown cable! I just want a stock kickdown cable!
hey i tried that on my 90 fox and it felt like the trans was slipping. then i tried to tighten it more and it was worse then i tried to put a lil more slack into the cable and then i tested the car. it starts out fine and then it still has trouble shifting into 2nd. i'm so close but i don't want to burn up the tranny
If you tighten the cable and the trans slips worse then it sounds like overhaul time. Tightening the cable should make it shift later and firmer. Anytime an AOD starts slipping, for what ever reason, it's most likely damaged.
AOD is a decent trans I dont know what they were thinking when the smallest clutchpack makes a jump from 2nd to 3rd plus lockup in one whack, I am glad that the 4R70W was redesigned to change that shift schedule.
Yeah so all that stuff about having a friend step on the pedal for wide open throttle and marking it is not the right way. Also I've noticed that where it connects to the tranny that little arm is different mine is straight and not curved like that one could that be a problem or could someone have put the wrong one on it?
There's many ways to make this adjustment and I talk about them in the full version of this dvd. However this video clip shows the way it was done at the plant and the linkage is setup for this method. The linkage arm shape can be different from car to car. A straight one is common on truck models.
i really thank you for this for awhile i could not figure out why my mustang would not shift into OD and shops were talking about rebuilding the transmission because believe it or not alot of transmission shops don't know how to adjust the TV cable. I did it myself after watching this and she now shifts quite well Thanks brother
Something similar to the truck TV cable. '86 for the Crown Vic, Town Car, Grand Marquis, and Mustang etc. had a set up like the truck intake shown. One of their weird years. No bushing used. I would assume that it would be similar to that of a truck by means of adjusting it right?
That's correct, it's very much like the truck. I think I've seen that style having a spring loaded push button to release and adjust the cable's outer housing.
I just bought an oem cable for the 86 Mustang 302 TBI. It is factory number E6ZZ7F042A. It is specific for the 86 AOD and I assume it is only because of the intake bracket not being compatible with the adjuster. I need the bracket for the trans and intake if you have one for this year. Floyd
Man... WHat will happen if the AOD transmission has NOT the cable??? I have problems with my aod transmission... it doesn shift to 2nd,3rd and 4th.... ONLY run on 1st and R... aod NEEDS that cable to shift to 2nd 3rd an 4?????
Ken, Thanks so much for your TV cable video. I burnt up one AOD already within 20 miles. New engine had 3/8" difference in the setting. The popular Ford AT book didn't mention how to adjust the truck style cable or how VERY important adjustment is. Nice video! Thanks...Kimmer6
Thanks! You just saved me a bunch of money. I thought the 1-2 valve was sticking, but apparently after reinstalling the motor in my truck something shifted, allowing 1/4" slack in the cable. All's well now. Thanks, Man!
thank you so much, my mustang has been downshifting weird for years because of this and i just went and did what you said, its fixed,it had some pull on it and it would downshift abruptly, what i mean by downshift is when i go to stop after going 55 or higher, couldn't believe it was this simple, thanks again.

Good video! Got the brass bushing and adjusted it, using this technique! Couldn't be happier with the results! Thanks for posting!

hello i bought a b&m shifter for my 89 mustang and i cant remove the gear lever from the transmission, is there a certain way that i have to remove it?
YoungRand 2 years ago
Pull the pan to remove a nut on the shaft and a holding pin under the pan gasket.

Where do I find the video on rebuilding the Ford AOD that you mention? I have an '84 Mustang GT 5.0 with shift problems. Already tried TV rod adjustment and I'd like to see if it can be fixed in the valve body instead of replacing the trans.

Just go to my web site seen on the video and listed in the clip's text for ordering info.

Check fluid level. If it's full, then I would say it's time for an overhaul.

hey man can you help me figure something out???? i have a 1988 5.0L Ford Bronco with a AOD transmission on it. The 4x4 works fine. The problem with my AOD transmission is that it wont shift out of 1st gear!! i dont know what the problem is...could it be this??????
supra0142 2 years ago
Just take a look at your TV cable and see. If it's still hooked up and hasn't been moved then you likely have other internal problems.

Hi... hope you can help me...
I have an AOD transmission in a 302ho
My AOD is older model, and does not use TV cable... it oses mechanic link rod connected to carb. Do you think i can fabricate a rod for my AOD and carb?? using copper pipe...? can connect it directly point to point (carb-trans)??
Actually i'm using my car (LTD LX) and i have fixed the transmission shift controller in one position... Fixed in one position could damage my trans???
Sorry for my bad english
yorchreloaded 2 years ago

Thanks for this video! Helped me a lot!

What's the name of that kit??? (cable + cable holders on trans and throttle valve) and whats the price?
yorchreloaded 2 years ago
It's no kit, just stock Ford parts from a Mustang and a truck. Can't get these cables from Ford anymore so you'll have to look in the junkyard.

Know anyone with a rebuild video?

Learning from a PROFESSIONAL ROCKS! I have a 1971 Bronco and I bought it with a 93 302 EFI with a four speed, I then bought a AOD had it rebuild w/ a wide range gear set and advance adapters to a dana 20 transfer case, however I am having some install problems, I have a Art car shifter and now I need a tv cable and i cant find a stock, Lokar i called and they say i would need there shifter cable, braket, throtle linkage, and kickdown cable! I just want a stock kickdown cable!
Tuffguy3939 3 years ago
I think some tranny parts suppliers have them but you may need to go to a wrecking yard to find one.
BadShoeProductions 3 years ago
hey i tried that on my 90 fox and it felt like the trans was slipping. then i tried to tighten it more and it was worse then i tried to put a lil more slack into the cable and then i tested the car. it starts out fine and then it still has trouble shifting into 2nd. i'm so close but i don't want to burn up the tranny
dirt1984 3 years ago
If you tighten the cable and the trans slips worse then it sounds like overhaul time. Tightening the cable should make it shift later and firmer. Anytime an AOD starts slipping, for what ever reason, it's most likely damaged.
BadShoeProductions 3 years ago
AOD is a decent trans I dont know what they were thinking when the smallest clutchpack makes a jump from 2nd to 3rd plus lockup in one whack, I am glad that the 4R70W was redesigned to change that shift schedule.

Outstanding! I'd buy this on DVD if I could find the source!

Just go to my web site link listed on the video clip for info.

Yeah so all that stuff about having a friend step on the pedal for wide open throttle and marking it is not the right way. Also I've noticed that where it connects to the tranny that little arm is different mine is straight and not curved like that one could that be a problem or could someone have put the wrong one on it?
blacktigerwu 3 years ago
There's many ways to make this adjustment and I talk about them in the full version of this dvd. However this video clip shows the way it was done at the plant and the linkage is setup for this method. The linkage arm shape can be different from car to car. A straight one is common on truck models.

i really thank you for this for awhile i could not figure out why my mustang would not shift into OD and shops were talking about rebuilding the transmission because believe it or not alot of transmission shops don't know how to adjust the TV cable. I did it myself after watching this and she now shifts quite well Thanks brother

I got a question for you. What about the 1986 year for the Crown Vic? They did not use the bushing.
Cortex122990 3 years ago
As far as I remember, the 86 CV is just like the other CV's and Mustangs which uses the same bushing. What have you seen on the 86?
BadShoeProductions 3 years ago
Something similar to the truck TV cable. '86 for the Crown Vic, Town Car, Grand Marquis, and Mustang etc. had a set up like the truck intake shown. One of their weird years. No bushing used. I would assume that it would be similar to that of a truck by means of adjusting it right?
Cortex122990 3 years ago
That's correct, it's very much like the truck. I think I've seen that style having a spring loaded push button to release and adjust the cable's outer housing.
BadShoeProductions 3 years ago
yeah the release clip is behind the throttle bracket. Thanks for confirming. :D
Cortex122990 3 years ago
I just bought an oem cable for the 86 Mustang 302 TBI. It is factory number E6ZZ7F042A. It is specific for the 86 AOD and I assume it is only because of the intake bracket not being compatible with the adjuster. I need the bracket for the trans and intake if you have one for this year. Floyd

I would say your local wrecking yard is your only hope.
