I know this may be blasphemous, but I prefer the flute conertos in G and D (they're catchier), the oboe concerto in C, and the flute and harp concerto in C (2nd movement of which gives the clarinet adagio a run for its money. This is still my fourth favorite classical wind concerto, though.
Wow. Just wow... I'm playing the third movement of the concerto as my solo this year... And I'm pretty much picking my solo for next year that I'll also use to audition at colleges... And after listening to this, I think I've found it. Love love love this :)
This is awesome. I love the way he modulates the sounds on his clarinet for licks, even changing within the middle of a lick to get the subtle coloring going on. Absolutely brilliant.... it's like his clarinet is singing soul music!
Indeed, however a good clarinet does help improve your sound. I noticed a huge difference when I bought my Buffet, especially in my throat tones and my altissimo register.
the bassett clarinet has such a beautiful tone. much different than my Bb its like between a bass and Bb right...becuase this is my first time hearing itof one what wonderful understanding i have of my instrument D:
Beautiful articulation- when I play the clarinet I know this is something I have to work on because I tend to slur everything too much and leave out the subtle anunciation of the notes that need to stand out. Also lovely dynamics- nice and modulated throughout I think. Just lovely :)
This is making me want to play my clarinet A LOT and my piano but they're at home, three hours away :(
i love this piece, im playing it next year as my all-state audition. i like how he started all the trills on the note above, thats how my teacher is having me do it. Only one thing, normally in mozarts pieces after a big crescendo the last not of the phrase is normally softer, this guy didnt do that, but still a very good piece
Im playing this solo for solo & ensemble, it's really fun :) It's about six pages long. My other friend is playing Rondo. Next year I plan on playing movement 2, and 3 of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, oh and I also plan on making it to the Texas All-State band. Im going to try extremely hard.
Love the tempo! I think articulation is very best- (I think), phrasing- beutiful, orchestra very temper (very important for me). Thanks for this posting!
A while back, my clarinet teacher did something amusing with this piece and his Bb clarinet.
He had the chance of playing this with his orchestra, but he had no access to an clarinet in A. So he pulled all of the pieces of his clarinet about a third of the way. And viola! Clarinet in A! Of course, the tone was a bit off, but nonetheless, it satisfied the listeners.
@leSeide perhaps they transpose the orchestra part depending on what instrument the soloist is using? i'm not sure but i have a feeling it would be that way instead
@leSeide I disagree. If it's difficult or unrealistic (especially price-wise) for one to obtain an A clarinet, then it's not too hard to transpose the orchestral part up a semitone.
I did this just so I could play along to it in my score-writing software (just the second movement, so far), even though I'll probably never play it with a real orchestra.
Shifrin's interpretation of the Mozart on bassett clarinet has always been one of my favorites. I put his version up to share it with the world. Glad you like it. Thanks for your comment.
This is an incredibly tasteful version of this sublime concerto, which shows that Mr. Shifrin is a musician of first order. But, why did you cut the beautiful orchestra introduction?!!! Could you post this movement in its complete version, please!
If I compare this to my performance of this movement, I could say that his way of connecting phrases are much better. I am sure that demands more air. Right now I am really working on improving my tone. I put that performance with piano accompaniment on youtube so you can check it out.
I do agree in the remerciements from Mr. Stanley Haye Smith, age 12, as this is the original and true version of the work, being for basset clarinet. And it is rare that someone has the good criteria and/or the possibility to post a whole work in u.tube; so, thank you very much. (Oh and I long to be able to hear a whole work of classical music in one post, not divided by movements in different posts...)
I have found Beethoven's symphonies with Karajan all in one single post! at least nrs. 6 , 7 & 8 . With 33 minutes uninterrupted, excellent recording & sound. Kind regards.
Thanks for putting all Mozart's Clarinet Concerto on Google video with the Basset Clarinet. I've always wanted to hear all of it with the Basset Clarinet because the Basset Clarinet lines make a lot of ways that take a long time to explain and I might use up all my comment space. Thanks again
I'm taking this solo. :)

Nice interpretation. But I think his basset clarinet has some tuning problems. The throat notes are rather flat. Otherwise excellent!

@lykoulos Not quite true, though I wish. A clarinetist is only as good as their instrument.

Is it supposed to be played on a bassett?
I'm playing it on my Bb Clarinet.
CrysisCore20 2 years ago
Yes, the concerto was originally written for an A bassett clarinet.
It is perfectly ok to play it on a Bb clarinet, however if accompanied by an orchestra, Playing it on a normal A clarinet would be necessary.
