  • I'm taking this solo. :)

  • I know this may be blasphemous, but I prefer the flute conertos in G and D (they're catchier), the oboe concerto in C, and the flute and harp concerto in C (2nd movement of which gives the clarinet adagio a run for its money. This is still my fourth favorite classical wind concerto, though.

  • every time i watch this particular video i think of him playing this with the b-flat clarinet actually in his elbow

    weird...

  • Wow. Just wow... I'm playing the third movement of the concerto as my solo this year... And I'm pretty much picking my solo for next year that I'll also use to audition at colleges... And after listening to this, I think I've found it. Love love love this :)

  • Really wonderful !!!

  • Met him last semester! He plays on an R13 Tosca [right now]. I prefer my Prestige...

  • @girolle01 Does the R13 Tosca exist?

  • @traineemusician Ha. I just realized that its name doesn't include 'R13"...

  • This is awesome. I love the way he modulates the sounds on his clarinet for licks, even changing within the middle of a lick to get the subtle coloring going on. Absolutely brilliant.... it's like his clarinet is singing soul music!

  • This is the best that Mozart wrote.

  • Mr. Shifrin, you appear to be holding an extra clarinet.

  • what the HEY!?!? It cuts off at the end AT THE BEST PART!!!!! GRRRRR!!!!

  • Hearing this makes me unbelievably happy

  • this song rocks so fucking hard

  • Donnez moi la gaité, je ne devrai la refuser, entre futur et conditionnel la langue française est dure

  • Donnez moi la gaité, je ne devrai la refuser

  • To the five people who disliked this video. You honestly have no respect or taste in quality music.

  • Nice interpretation. But I think his basset clarinet has some tuning problems. The throat notes are rather flat. Otherwise excellent!

  • I like 2:46 - 3:27

  • He came to Interlochen this summer and played the entire concerto with the WYSO. It was amazing.

  • I'm trying to learn this so I can play it at a philharmonic audition. It's so awesome

  • oh if only I could spend a good 4000 on a pro clarinet for rich and clear tone :'(

  • @fmlygyfntc the clsrinet doesnt make the good player

  • @lykoulos

Indeed, however a good clarinet does help improve your sound. I noticed a huge difference when I bought my Buffet, especially in my throat tones and my altissimo register.

  • @lykoulos Not quite true, though I wish. A clarinetist is only as good as their instrument.

  • @lykoulos Not quite true, though I wish. A clarinetist is only as good as his or her instrument.

  • he's coming to interlochen this summer!

  • the bassett clarinet has such a beautiful tone. much different than my Bb its like between a bass and Bb right...becuase this is my first time hearing itof one what wonderful understanding i have of my instrument D:

  • My goal would be to play all three concerto's with an orchestra. Least I have the second one down, just two to go!

  • Wonderful piece. Why are the last few verses cut off?????

  • my friend said that if i want to listen to relaxing music (whilst studying) try mozart, i think this is the best calming music.

  • I play it on a Bb-clarinet and the articulation is really hard in a few spots. Is the articulation easier on an A-clarinet?

  • i so wanna play all 3 of these on tenor :]

  • Anyone have the full version of this piece, or this movement at least, that they can share? I'd greatly appreciate it if you did, really.

  • @NGKalas I mean the unedited one, where it reaches the actual end of the movement.

  • The piece that made me fall in love with classical. 1984. 'member it as if yesterday.

  • saw this guy live

  • Beautiful articulation- when I play the clarinet I know this is something I have to work on because I tend to slur everything too much and leave out the subtle anunciation of the notes that need to stand out. Also lovely dynamics- nice and modulated throughout I think. Just lovely :)

This is making me want to play my clarinet A LOT and my piano but they're at home, three hours away :(

Does someone want to lend me a crane?? hahahahaa

  • also im fine with starting the recording where the clarinet comes in but i dont like how they cut the movement off before it ended

  • i love this piece, im playing it next year as my all-state audition. i like how he started all the trills on the note above, thats how my teacher is having me do it. Only one thing, normally in mozarts pieces after a big crescendo the last not of the phrase is normally softer, this guy didnt do that, but still a very good piece

  • Im playing this solo for solo & ensemble, it's really fun :) It's about six pages long. My other friend is playing Rondo. Next year I plan on playing movement 2, and 3 of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, oh and I also plan on making it to the Texas All-State band. Im going to try extremely hard.

  • i hope u make it, im playing this for my all-state audition next year

  • One of my favorites!

i am a clarinet player and i wanna learn to play something like this someday :)

    Wonderful Piece!

  • Love the tempo! I think articulation is very best- (I think), phrasing- beutiful, orchestra very temper (very important for me). Thanks for this posting!

  • love it. Thank you

  • wonderful

  • i looove his tone and technicality!! everything's so CLEAR! absolutely wonderful

  • VERY nice! i think i actually paid attention to my homework instead of singing haha

  • SOOO SEROULSY BEAUTIFUL, i wish i could play like that....hmmmm. still a master piece!

  • very beautiful

  • Is it supposed to be played on a bassett?

I'm playing it on my Bb Clarinet.

  • Yes, the concerto was originally written for an A bassett clarinet.

It is perfectly ok to play it on a Bb clarinet, however if accompanied by an orchestra, Playing it on a normal A clarinet would be necessary.

  • Thank you!

  • A while back, my clarinet teacher did something amusing with this piece and his Bb clarinet.

He had the chance of playing this with his orchestra, but he had no access to an clarinet in A. So he pulled all of the pieces of his clarinet about a third of the way. And viola! Clarinet in A! Of course, the tone was a bit off, but nonetheless, it satisfied the listeners.

  • yes i play it on a Bb but will swap to an A for performance, much easier than playing it in b major

  • @leSeide perhaps they transpose the orchestra part depending on what instrument the soloist is using? i'm not sure but i have a feeling it would be that way instead

  • @leSeide I disagree. If it's difficult or unrealistic (especially price-wise) for one to obtain an A clarinet, then it's not too hard to transpose the orchestral part up a semitone.

I did this just so I could play along to it in my score-writing software (just the second movement, so far), even though I'll probably never play it with a real orchestra.

  • I am listening this music long time.

This playing has ever green brightness.

  • David Shifrin has always been my inspiration. His tone is just so round and full and beautiful! I just want to be able to sound like him someday <3

  • Shifrin's interpretation of the Mozart on bassett clarinet has always been one of my favorites. I put his version up to share it with the world. Glad you like it. Thanks for your comment.

  • absolutely beautiful... i have been looking for this every where

  • Cool....

What great input. So glad we could get your opinion.

  • Why do people not have respect for beautiful music anymore?

  • @kowerski14 mozart is truly amazing, so you must not know what real and classical music is.

  • Wonderful!!!

  • why don't they have basset horns anymore they sound great from the sound of this concerto

  • Wonderful. Obviously Basset have outstanding sound!

  • can anyone send me the Sheet music(spartito-pentagramma)? please, you will make a happy man!!

    molto certo

  • This is an incredibly tasteful version of this sublime concerto, which shows that Mr. Shifrin is a musician of first order. But, why did you cut the beautiful orchestra introduction?!!! Could you post this movement in its complete version, please!

  • Ah, I would love to post the whole thing, however I am limited to ten minutes of video for some reason. Or at least I was when I created it.

  • this i why i love playing the clarinet

  • Mostly Mozart :) Nice name for an orchestra...

  • 7200!!!!!! I WIN!

  • If I compare this to my performance of this movement, I could say that his way of connecting phrases are much better. I am sure that demands more air. Right now I am really working on improving my tone. I put that performance with piano accompaniment on youtube so you can check it out.

  • you can't compare yourself to this guy.

  • That's assuming a lot.

  • What?

  • im onna play this for the audition for my school for adv. orchestra.

  • I do agree in the remerciements from Mr. Stanley Haye Smith, age 12, as this is the original and true version of the work, being for basset clarinet. And it is rare that someone has the good criteria and/or the possibility to post a whole work in u.tube; so, thank you very much. (Oh and I long to be able to hear a whole work of classical music in one post, not divided by movements in different posts...)

  • I have found Beethoven's symphonies with Karajan all in one single post! at least nrs. 6 , 7 & 8 . With 33 minutes uninterrupted, excellent recording & sound. Kind regards.

  • Thanks for putting all Mozart's Clarinet Concerto on Google video with the Basset Clarinet. I've always wanted to hear all of it with the Basset Clarinet because the Basset Clarinet lines make a lot of ways that take a long time to explain and I might use up all my comment space. Thanks again
