sensei,...arigatou gozaimasu for your lesson,..you know i learned more i mean a lot from this video than my previous lesson...its super cool!sugoi!...
neway,..i have a very big trouble when it comes to partcles...i get confused theres so many of them and sometimes with same function how can i diferencitae them..?can u give me some tips?please......???lab yah and thank you...always take care so that you can make lots of fantastic video...kk?^_^
@mocrokechba thank you! it's anata o ai shite iru (^_^) or ai shite iru or daisuke desu, actually i'm not too sure on the kast one but the first 2 for sure (^_^) [x]
"shichi" is more used than "nana", because "nana" is easier to pronounce! Also, when you say "7" with other numbers or words together(not individually), some people might think you are saying "ichi", so it's a little bit confusing.
I like how you always take people's advice on board. I tend to get scared of making mistakes and go all shy so I think I should follow in the steps of yourself and others to just go ahead and talk more and not be afraid of stuffing up! :)
Yeah that's right! I wasn't taught this phrase unfortunately but drewbningen has posted a video response explaining this. Thank you very much for telling me also! It's great you're learning japanese too, it's does sound like our classes are at the same stage doesn't it? Brilliant! I need all the help I can get! *chuckle* ^_^
Great pronunciation of my name, and thanks for the shout! Most people don't even know where to start - it's actually a Finnish word (means pygmy goat).
Beware - you and Henry-san are saying "Matta rai shuu", not "Mata rai shuu". I'll see if I can post another video soon...
*sigh* ooh i see now! I guess i got too excited about learning a new phrase that I didn't actually learn it *blush* so sorry about that! I've added an annotation in the video, thank you for picking up on it! ^_^ [x]
By the way, you could tone down the "I" on suuji (数字). And the R on Rei should sound (am I bossy enough yet?) somewhat intermediary between the Western R and L. I think it's common for native English speakers to have trouble with the Japanese R-like sound... it takes time too, so don't worry!
Being a native Portuguese speaker, the difference between my R and L sounds is precisely where you put your tongue. If you do both (or none) it sounds like perfect Japanese... not an easy feat though, at least not for me.
Love how you put your sunny personality into your videos! :] It kind of brings fresh breath of air into the jvlogging community! keep up the great videos!
igloo, I'm not a sempai, but i lived in Nihon for a year. I went to Kobe University, and one of the first things I learned was how to pronounce the F sound. The Japanese soften the F because it is not a natural sound to them. example: You might order coffee at the shop. A Japanese girl would pronounce it 'ko hee'. It is understood in all dialects. Please ask your prof about the pronunciation. O, I love Japan. I wISH I could go back.
I think it's important to know why most of the time "shi" (4) and "shichi" (7) aren't used. It's because "Shi" also means death in japanese. Of course it's not the same kanji but it's the same pronunciation. So it's better to use "yon" and "nana" as much as possible (well of course as u mentioned there are exceptions like year 2007 is ni sen shichi nen) :) Oh also telephone number is written "denwa bangou" the "u" is there to make the "o" sound longer. Your pronunciation is correct though. ^^
I love your lessons. Thanks to you I am actually learning Japanese ;-) keep it up!

Hi Maki and Leigh!!
Both "nisen shichi nen" and "nisen nana nen" are correct. Actually, "nisen nana nen" is more used! I hear (or heard) it often!
"nana" is easier to pronounce and understand! If you say "nisen shichi nen", it might sound "2001" sometimes :P

I've always felt like some R-sounds are similar to a rolled-R of some other languages, or simply with a hint of a D in there... Your opinion?
alecjahn 2 years ago
Being a native Portuguese speaker, the difference between my R and L sounds is precisely where you put your tongue. If you do both (or none) it sounds like perfect Japanese... not an easy feat though, at least not for me.
furetosan 2 years ago
Oddly enough I thought about it a little more and literally placing my tongue in between the physical L and R locations... seems to work damn well!

Yes I do find it difficult to pronounce these sounds in particular, thank you very much for the tips! ^_^ [x]

Here are some examples where people say "ni sen nana nen". Search for:
"2007年 日本ダービー ウオッカ 四位洋文", and pay attention at 00:09
"2007年冬 最新コスプレ人気TOP10(Cosplay ranking in winter ,2007)", and pay attention at 00:11

You can also say:
nana nen = seven years
nana nen kan = for seven years

You should hang up a thin white sheet in front of your light is you want to dull it down a bit. I think it might help :)
