the axe is good in-game, but in real life, stuck the axe in a zombie skull and see if you can take it out before being ripped to shreds.

Well you wouldn't hack the axe into the zombie's skull, you would hack it into his neck and decapitate him. But axe still wouldn't be a good weapon in real life as it's pretty heavy for a melee weapon and its attack speed is slow.

A machete, cutlass or medium length sword/knife would make a far better choice for melee.

No, those are Hazmat Suit Infected. They're supposed to be CEDA agents working to help try and prevent the spread of the infection, but failed and became infected themselves. Lucky for them though, cuz of their suits they can run through fire and take incendiary shots with no problem.
