I never bothered buying a horse on my playthrough. I heard it helped avoid giants, but getting your butt kicked by those mammoth herders is a key part of the game. You should show a 'typical' low level encounter against them. There is a camp near Whiterun.
@lmcnabney I know right. The first time I wandered into a "gentle" giant camp the first giant smacked me so hard the game had loaded the load screen before my body even started falling back DOWN.
The second time I ran into a giant I accidentally kited the dragon I was fighting into one. It killed the dragon, then killed me while I was over-weighted by the dragon's loot.
I saw what I think is the horse. It appeared to be grazing, and his head popped up a sec. From about 12:39 (on the mid left of the screen) to about 12:40 (mid right). Though I could be wrong.
@plquattro I agree, I believe I saw it too...and spent a lot of time laughing with my son and yelling at Aaron "You're horse is right there, you idiot!"
He's not kidding when he says he has a crap sense of direction. He walked in roughly a two foot circle and managed to lose his horse...and try to ride Rudolph instead.

The Horse is very probably still alive ... they tend to run away.

@Korelterramalcaor Just fast travel to a stable. If you horse is still alive it will appear there.
