I'm using 'xwinwrap'. It's a software that accomplishes the same thing that Vista's DreamScene does: to have an animated wallpaper in your background.
Once installed type:
xwinwrap -ni -argb -fs -s -st -sp -nf -b -- /usr/lib/xscreensaver/glmatrix -window-id WID
Replace 'glmatrix' for your favorite wallpaper or video.
