  • JIM WINS NORA TROPHY. JOE THE FIDDLER

  • I used to watch these often on TV!

  • I remember seeing a bit -- might've been on the Tonight Show, which would've been confusing since Tom looks so much like Johnny Carson -- where Dick said "Take it!" and Tom said "No!" And Dick does 2 minutes on how Tom had to take it. Dick: "So what is he obligated to do?" Tom: "Take it." Dick: "Thank you!" Tom: "If they feel like it!"

And for the record, I used to like Dick best, but considering the way he treated Tom onstage, I changed my mind.

  • is that John Williams!?

  • @sax0ph0neher0 My God it is!

  • Naked Bacon!!!! Yay!!!!

  • Tom people didn't come here to hear us argue. Some of them did.

  • This episode of the Boston Pops on PBS was the first show we ever recorded on VHS. You see, back in my day, we didn't have any fancy "YouTube" or "Internet". If you wanted to remember something for all time, you had to sit down, grab a big hunk of plastic with some flimsy film inside, and record it yourself, consarnit! THAT'S THE WAY IT WAS AND WE LIKED IT!!! WE LOVED IT!!!

Seriously, though, this is great stuff.

  • Tom Smothers reminds me of Tosh.0.

  • @chrissylm37 Daniel Tosh could learn a lot from the Smothers Brothers

  • "5-7-1-3"!

  • lol,they were great eh

  • I'm 23, my Dad played this LP for me when I was a kid. Needless to say I think I'm a pretty cool guy these days 8)

  • what i wouldnt give for a dvd of this.

  • This is the amazing timing that only siblings can have. Perfect!

  • jesus, this stuff us painfyll to watch.,

  • This kind of entertainment really shows why the Academy Awards stinks. The Smothers Brothers can act, sing, play music, and tell jokes. People like James Franco and Ann Hathaway are actors, not entertainers. They don't know how to entertain a live audience. Unfortunately, they represent new Hollywood, who cannot entertain without being within a very controlled situation -- with writers, directors, sound mixers, editors, and cinematographers to make them appear better than they really are.

  • Absolutely brilliant timing - they've been doin' it for nearly 50 years now - and here they look as good as they did on the old Sullivan show in the 60s. Their comedy is timeless - their love for one another is obvious, and for what they do and did, I for one, will always be grateful... Thanks boys. And btw, Tommy? I'll bet your mom actually liked YOU best, what'dya think of that?

  • oh god, how did he know it was the third time.. that took me a second..

But see, he thought the first two times were 'naked bacon', so it makes sense.

  • That WAS a compliment..... was as surprised as anyone!

  • "If I could live my life over again I would take it, I just don't have the time." Too damn funny.

  • Thumbs up if you came here after watching that Simpsons episode

  • i used to be in the dueling pirate show at the MGM, tommy's son loved our show and tommy invited our cast to see them at the sahara. i was so flattered i thought i would puke. i saw them everytime they performed for the next 2 nights and even though the premise was the same, the show was always different. we got to hang out backstage and i became pretty good friends with them. they are incredible people and talented beyond words...and two of the most down to earth performers i have ever met.

  • i loved the show when i was a kid. remember being upset when "THE MAN" cancelled them !

  • They started out as a 'serious' folkie act, then found their wings as screwball comedians. Their father, believe it or not, was an Army general. My parents hated them, which automatically made them favorites of mine. I only wish that they would have gone on Saturday Night Live, and played the Bush Brothers, George and Jeb. That would have been totally insane. MAY THE SIBLING REVELRY GO ON FOREVER!

  • @thisismyidgdi I think you meant 5:13, but yes the look is hilarious.

"Tom, people did not come here to hear us argue"

    "Some of them did..."

  • My fave one... this one and Micheal Row the boat ashore =D

  • Tommy's eyes at 6:13 are pure comic genious. Let some today be that funny with just their eyes.

  • Great fun love it..

  • Classic comedy... gotta love it!

  • I miss the brothers.

  • some of em did,,,,,,,,,,, love it

  • still makes me laugh

  • The REAL annoying orange.

  • Tommy looks like Gw Bush!Dick looks like curious George!

  • Those two were/are brilliant!!! Love this video, I laughed and enjoyed the song so much.

  • Smothers Brothers are legendary!

  • Wonderful, happy, lighthearted entertainment. We need that again. flufrules

  • saw this on the simpsons LoL

  • heard ya the third time

  • Years ago on the Oscars, 'substitutes' were on stage to present the nominated song. For example, in 1955 Dean Martin sang "Three Coins in a Fountain" whereas it was someone else (four Aces or Frank Sinatra) who recorded it for the movie. All that to say in the early 1960's these 2 sang Nat King Cole's and Stubby Hayes' hit "Cat Ballou". Of course they did it in their own style, complete with the signature 'mother always liked you best' line. Would love to see it again sometime.

  • Naked Bacon!

  • As so many others did, noted them on the recently broadcast Simpsons episode, but was well aware of them before. I then picked up "Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," by David Bianculli, which I highly recommend, at my library. These guys, and Tom in particular, really pushed the envelope. The real Tommy Smothers could not be more different from his stage persona. I believe I saw the live broadcast of their comeback specials - on CBS, of all places!

  • I'm reading that book right now, oddly enough, and LOVING every syllable. I've loved their music and schtick since I was a tadpole but owing to Bianculi's exceptionally informative and witty book, Tommy Smothers has become a hero to me.

  • haha man! i saw them on the simpsons, i dig this!!! lol

  • lol thats why i looked for them ¨brother where bart thou¨right? :P

  • @SebastianB18 yeah! they were funny on the simpsons! lol

  • Man I'm glad they were on The Simpsons. However saturated I am with cheap laughs, being a present-dayer, this still resonates more.

  • This whole thread is way too civil and polite - come on people, this is the You Tube comment section, where you get into flame wars over things like the color of their suits. Now step it up - should at least see a Nazi reference in the next dozen posts

  • umm...Darn it?

I've seen this routine several times and each version is different. Tommy and Dick have such great timing AND their musicianship is still top-notch.

  • Uh, what in the world are you talking about? You didn't even take it.

  • This is one of their classic bits. What a joy to watch again.

  • Saw them at the Keswick .......They were Great!

  • Yeah, I just saw them on the Simpsons and couldn't help but find out more on them. I laughed so hard! "I don't know what naked bacon is but I don't want to take it!" lol How have I never heard of them? ??

  • I feel very fortunate to have seen them in person AND gotten to meet them after the show. Wonderful entertainers and warm friendly people.

  • Take it

  • lol, im too young to know who smothers brothers were, but i saw the on the simpsons, so i wanted to know more. lol

    their not bad

  • glad you took the time to try and find out, they've and interesting story and history. You might try looking them up on wikipedia if you haven't already.

  • hey same here man, i heard this song on the ending credits of the simpsons so i found it on here. cool coincidence.

  • Same.

  • Same

  • In the simpsons they always have good music, two weeks before, a good one was:

Donovan - Season of the Witch

  • LOLZ THESE GUYS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @toujames too young is just an excuse, not being well rounded is it actually.

  • Comment removed

  • @toujames spank a gopher feeeet do do do do gopher feet!!!

  • Comment removed

  • if i could live my life over again i would take it, i just dont have the time...hahaha

  • Great Post!!! Dad used to love this show. This is the only skit I ever remember. Thanks for posting!! Original!!!

  • To this day Tom still acts a bit slow in front of the camera, but I remember seeing him in an interview when he was dead serious (I don't recall what it was about now). He allowed his piercing intellect to show and the transformation was almost frightening.

  • Perfect example of why the Smothers Brothers were, are, and always will be, great.

These guys had the biggest balls on TV back in the 60's and 70's and they paid for it . If they had just been a variety-type act, they would have been great enough in the annals of entertainment. But they stood up to the censors and told it like it was and got cancelled for it.

They aren't just funny. The Smothers Brothers are groundbreaking pioneers. Look them up. It's worth it.

  • @kosherspeare i agree but they did not get cancelled...they got fired...big difference

  • @kosherspeare I used to watch them in the 60s and 70s, they were hilarious! They were the Abbott & Costello of their day. I didn't realize that they had "issues" with the censors, they always seemed to be dignified in their act. What were the censors after them about?

  • @woodbutcherjohn Being against the vietnam war

  • @Belindashort That was a pretty common theme among the variety shows of that era, there must be more to it than that.

  • @woodbutcherjohn They were way ahead of their time. Viewers loved them, but they went beyond the boundaries that shows like "Laugh-In" and "Sonny and Cher" wouldn't. They didn't just poke gentle fun at the government, the war, and the Nixon/Agnew team, they trashed them. Not just satirically, but honestly. They'd be considered tame by today's standards-but they were outspoken in a way that was new at the time. And when they were told to shut up, they spoke up. They're still hilarious.

  • I have an album of their skits from the 60's. Cabbage; Pumas; My Old Man, etc. My brother-in-law and I are always reciting bits of it.

  • lmao!!!

omg tom is amazing!! xD :]

  • These guys were among the few who could make my father laugh. I never could understand why when I was 9. Now I get it.

  • i was so lucky i got to meet those two when I was 13, I also got to meet Sherri Lewis and Lambchop! yay.

  • We need modern acts in the vein of The Smothers Brothers and Homer and Jethro. Today's acts can't even come close to them.

  • Has anyone spotted their rendition of the impossible dream around youtube?

  • Hahaha~!

"If I could live my life over again, I would take it. I just don't have the time..!"

    <3

  • See you at the Honeywell Center!

  • Yeaaaaaa Tommy and Dicky Smothers!!!!

  • hahahahahahahaha...john williams

  • Great routine!

  • Rikki is right and I apologize to the smothers brothers for not recognizing their full talent

  • Indeed they are master's of comedy as max said. But too few people really appreciate their musical ability, because of that. Their harmonies rival the Everly Brothers or just about anyone else from the era, or since and Tommy was literally a master on the guitar. That is the beauty. There were no lapses in their presentations. Excellent comedy and excellent music. One of the most entertaining groups, duos ever. Salute guys.

  • these guys are masters of comedy.they still perform!

  • I heard you the third time you said it!! 'Well, how could you hear it the third time if you only heard it once ??' he he he

    TAKE IT !!!

  • This is the most complex funny thing I've every seen... and if you watch all of them you see alot of call back comedy.

  • Very true. Pumas come up frequently.

  • Is the Pumas in the cravasses skit anywhere on You Tube?

  • Yes. It's the first video in the Related box next to this video.

  • the best of sibling bickering :) love it

  • LMAO!!

  • Take it.....

  • Wow. That's a lot of republicans in the audience.

  • not in Boston!

  • LOL!

  • These people didn't come here to hear us argue.

    Some of them did.

  • for most of us that's the ONLY reason why! LOL

  • This reminds me of in living color when they made fun of them, lol

  • A mi me ENCANTAN! Vivan los Smothers Brothers!

  • a welsh man wrote this song

  • I'm so glad that I was born in the fifties. The guys made laugh so hard.

  • LOL! A danish Group called Linje 3 copied this !!

  • Man you have no culture. It's better than the crap they call comedy these days.

  • THEN DON'T WATCH THEM, IDIOT!!!!!!!

  • tooo bad your life SUCKS.

  • have anything friggin' intelligent to say?

  • In during the mid 80's I video taped this episode of "Evening at the Pops". Both my dad and myself enjoyed. My dad cried to tears. A few years later my video got taped over. I made several attempts, over several years trying to procure this tape. I had no luck doing so. This evening, I stumbled across these videos of yours. I do not have to words to articulate my happiness. I can only say thanks. Thanks.

  • They are as good musicians as they are comedians. And what timing, wow!

  • They still are- I saw them two years back and we were just rolling in the aisles. Brilliant.

  • this was on pbs back in the mid 80s.

  • Can this concert be purchased on DVD?

  • I'm pretty sure that if you look on places like E-bay you could find a copy of this, if not you should try contacting PBS I'm sure they were selling copy's of the show, or at least that's what I've always known them to do.

  • Naked and Bacon doesn't sound like "Take it"

    Try

  • Great post! It's a blast seeing that. One of the Smothers classics.

  • Hilarious!

  • Oh that was funny!

  • An old routine...but always funny - regardless of the decade (!)

  • Thank you so much!

  • These guys are so funny!
