  • What the name of the song in the background please tell me do they have a cd this is a style of singing that is being forgotten MANY OF THE OLD SONGS AND DANCES ARE BEING FORGOTTEN BUT YOU GUYS ARE THE BOMB OF KEEPING THE SPIRIT ALIVE

  • what the name of the song in the background please do they have a cd

  • The first part didn't really get it but something NEW 8 ) well i think the old way is still better sorry to say but it was nice..............

  • first dance is an awsome awsome awsome piece of work...i have the eye for details and the first dance is Art!...

  • awesome work girls - looking forward to many more!!

  • nice one cuz hehe

  • nope didnt get it. =(

  • ooo but have you tried the rodeo burger from b.k, i had 4today heheehhee

  • I know Maryjane was a beautiful girl but she was only manage to engage to the samoan culture and leaarn the siva when she moved back to Samoa in 1997 because she consult me for some tips. nI know she was influenced by Peter Tamasese and Cecilia Keil with their contemporary style.

  • With all due respect nanaifanua, this is not your dance or choreography to claim.....the second half of the dance was composed by myself with actions that i have grown up with as i was born and raised in Samoa...i am afakasi but i am also a proud samoan, i was not taught by the queen, however i have lived my life performing the siva samoa prior to moving here to nz...my intention is not to copy or offend as many of you have expressed but simply to express myself and love for my culture....

  • @masisamoa08 Nice one....fully know where you're coming from.

  • @masisamoa08 Just use the block button thats what I did.....or disable comments hehehe, theres always gonna be haters lol, if we listened to them we'd never be able to do anything.

  • theres nothing wrong for being original and creative Sharleen. You can always compose youre own masterpiece instead of cologning other peoples actions and ideas because using other peoples idea is not a good thing. And dont forget do my siva with justice.

  • i understand everyone has an opinion to be heard but also try to understand that you nanaifanua are making assumptions that are no where near the facts, and i won't list my achievements or blow my own trumpet to justify my creativity or originality...regardless of who your mentor was, doesn't gve you the rite to claim every Samoan dance yours or to claim you have any superiority over anyone regardless what year they "consulted" with u or lived in Samoa....

  • I am very disappointed to see my siva taking to this level. Im a choreographer and a dancer. I used to dance for the teachers dance group back in Samoa before I came to NZ.. And this is one thing I cant stand since i moved out of Samoa is to see my siva being exploited and manipulated by overseas born samoan or any other race. One of my greatest mentor and a teacher was the queen of Samoa" Queen Salamasina Malietoa".

  • Wow! I very much enjoyed that. I'm 110% proud Samoan! I see nothing wrong with seeing Samoa contemporary sivas! It was BEAUTIFUL! Keep it up girls. Hope to see more soon. Sorry my name is Liz n i'm using my dad's login lol

  • So you are Samoan geographing Samoan siva with the title"Ura Tabu" ?? Tahitian group then..performing their contemp of Samoan siva.. Great inovationsa in the term of arts..just gotta work at costuming, reaaly detaches the concept and the composition, we can interpret..but not forget the foundation..keep watching your videos and maybe you'll see..(do applaud you for the idea) malo to the teines..almost there.

  • I am but one choreographer in the group...we are a group made up of Samoan, Cook Island, Maori and Palagi dancers..and this is but one of our many contemporary dances of the Pacific...this dance does look very different now as we continue to improve and develop ideas..the name Ura Tabu (ura-Cook island for Dance and Tabu as in Taboo) reflects the concept behind our work...we have dinner side entertainment as well as theatre work that delves a bit deeper than the norm of "postcard" dances....

  • well, what can I say.... I was a member of the Samoa Visitor Bureau Dance Group when Mary Jane became a Miss Samoa -.... the part 2 of the dance.. most moves were similar to Mary Jace's talent. Peace :)

  • Yup learnt it, danced it, performed it with MARY JANE.....i understood it and trust me they are different, once again we are not mimicking the manumea bird:)....in saying that, it is a Samoan Siva so yes they are similar in that sense....MJ has a unique and very distinguished style of dancing and choreographing that I respect and would not even try and to mimic or copy....but yeah peace:)

  • ammmmm...?????? the second siva was a Miss Samoa Mary Jane Talent Show- (Miss Samoa Competition in 1999-2000)... It was a creative dance... whatever they call it......

  • NO the second half of the dance is NOT Mary Janes talent show....not a single move is taken from that-watch it again...we are not mimicking birds. The music is the same and thats it. I Charlene Tedrow choreographed the second half of this dance. I was born and raised in Samoa, and have been involved in Samoan Siva for as long as can remember....thanks for everyones opnions, I will continue to choreograph regardless as I know my art, I know my culture and trust where it is taking me in life....

  • This is disgustinggg ! seriously . Samoa is perfect with there traditional dances. This is just a major fuck up.. and everyone should just shut the fuck about talking intelligent . Who do you people think you are telling someone else to talk proper .. Everyone can say what the fuck they like you gangas

  • These dancers of Ura Tabu are totally committed to this work, and art. The choreography presents a mix of traditional, contemporary and hybrid forms. This mix and match approach could creates a fresh mark on the dance scene in N,Z. These women offer a point of difference. They are not afraid to show us their love of their people united through time and geographic distance, and their sacred relationship to nature and cultural practice.

  • ...again its just a re-interpretation ...one group doing a dance like this isnt going to endanger our culture okay its a different perspective however weird it is ...dnt worry we alright in NZ ...we more than alright lol

  • hi,i've become fascinated with this video and the comments. i'm only half samoan and haven't been raised samoan at all, but reading these comments i just think...whoasers...ouch...sadly i don't know enough about samoan culture or dance myself to have an indepth opinion (i am trying to learn tho) but reading your comment,i would agree with you.i would hope that samoan culture is still gonna be quite safe after this!

  • and i think that when a culture really becomes endangered is when the language and tradioitions are not passed down from your parents. i can honestly say that that has been my experience and it's no good.

  • @fonsy45 : DIDO

  • DUMB!!!! really this is a slap in da face to the samoan culture!!!! you are all ugly and CAN NOT DANCE!!!! u stupid girls!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Dumb is a pretty uneducated word dont you think phatsaoman53? Rather amateur in fact!! Why don't you try to expand your mind as well as your vocabulary??? Try to appreciate the fact that fa'a Samoa is expanding and moving with modern times. This group accentuates that.... To respond to this creativity as 'ugly & dumb,' simply describes the type of person you are. It's embarrassing to know there are fellow Samoans like you out there who are actually putting our own people down. Now thats ugly!

  • @phatsamoan53 its contemporary..

  • Hated the 1st dance. 2nd dance was good though.... Is this Mary Jane's ausiva? The 2nd dance was the same song she won her title to. Was pretty good back then and their moves are similar... Anyway, malo lava le sa'asa'a. Faifai a lelei. :-)

  • I think these dancers are so beautiful to watch, but its also disturbinhg.

This isn't hip hop where you can change it up, you say ur pushing boundaries, I say you're crossing it.

These females seem masculine & the way they dance on their toes makes them seem somewhat cocky.

To honestly respect ur culture, you'd actually have to learn it.

Have you? If you have, it sure doesn't show it.

Wanna be artistic? Paint a picture.

  • I think masculinity has been misinterpreting for mana? Whats wrong with an all female group who actually have stage presence?

  • can they have stage presence with more Grace? Theyir form seems arrogant to me, but that's just my opinion.

Don't get me wrong though, they are beautiful dancers, it's the dance I don't like.

  • so i reckon we cna do things like this because there is no danger of losing our culture or traditions. But i think we can always interpret Samoan siva in many ways like this without losing the pure essence and tradition of the siva ?? aww not here to cause trouble **shelters myself from attacks ** lol ,,Peace and much luv

  • i like this...very expressive ....it feels pre colonial ..the siva aitu - an expressive siva of spirits in which i reckon they are trying to express - probably could of been Samoan siva before the missionaries came ?? lol...and i agree with masisamoa08 we Samoans in NZ actualli have very strong roots in our culture ....hello we have Samoans doing great things over here. We have Samoan language offered in high schools as a subject Nationally. We have A National Samoan language week.

  • u just as dumb as these girls dancing!!!

  • must be from USA ..no further comment required

  • @lskgrad03 : HAHAHA!

  • oh my gosh..this is so embarrassing..I know your group is a new group, but why in the world would you guys want to do our culture dance like this..are one of you samoan to begin with..anyways,please dont embarrass us samoan by dancing like this..so,before you get all mad and jump into conclusions.this is just ridiculous.

  • hey to the haters who commented...you obviously dont know shit about new zealand...in new zealand we know our traditions and culture, however the world is changing and who the FUCK are you to tell this group that what they are doing is wrong...ive seen this group perform and i appreciate the steps they are taking to express the polynesian culture. so to the haters...know your shit before you say shit...and aaron, if i ever meet you...ima slap the shit out of you..keep your dollar you UFA AI KAE!

  • 1 - GROW UP and try to sound even a little bit intelligent in order for your comments to be taken seriously.

2 - I was raised in Samoa, so before you try and "take it to another level", perfect the dance first. So I'm pretty sure I'm an "expert" in MY culture.

3 - threats over the internet??? Really? Your dumb!

4 - You put your videos up here to be seen and commented on. Good or bad, you opened yourself up to criticism and as of yet, there are NO good comments.Your stupid, so yours is void.

  • kia Ora, We are 'Ura Tabu' a Contemporary Polynesian Dance Company. Our style of dance is based on old and new concepts of Polynesian Culture. We are looking to push the boundaries of our traditional backgrounds in a way that expresses our artistic minds. We greatly respect our cultural dances & they r our foundation. Our team of dancers are made up of traditional Polynesian dancers & 2gether we are moving forward, carrying our Polynesian heritage through 2day's modern society.

  • WTF..! What is going on down there in new zealand. You making up ur own shit?I don't know if I should put a dollar on u or slap the shit out of u.

  • nice art theater dancing but this aint remotely samoan!!! a little embarrassing that u would try to change up a whole culture's dance style, but im thinking u r making dance theater production. even the Polys watching look embarrassed for ur u guys blantly display of disrespect for the samoan dance.
