  • Judging by Gene's hair this is not long before MGPM premiered.

  • Most epic entrance ever. I got chills.

  • LOL Charles' reaction to Gary's imitation!!!! XD

  • We've fallen so far since.

  • How a bird got into CBS I'll never know!

  • He floated around everywhere he went.

  • the man knew how to make an entrance

  • i'm a 37 year old redneck, living in a trailer and I love charles nelson reily... there; I said it...

  • Why did Charles leave match game??

  • @pixi2nv

It's mentioned in another clip I might have posted, regarding what Charles will be dressed as for Halloween. Gene mentions that Charles is going to New York to do rehearsals for a play. Not sure if that means it was on Broadway, or what the title of the play was, but he was on hiatus for that reason.

  • @movienotes And Gary Burghoff filled in for him.

  • @movienotes I believe Charles was on Broadway appearing in Neil Simon's "God's Favorite". In 1976 he directed Julie Harris in "The Belle of Amherst"

  • @pixi2nv This I do know...Charles left Match Game briefly to go to New York to be in a broadway play...GSN is currently airing Match Game '75 and I'm waiting for the episode when he returns with the bird Harry.

  • @adamdicy Im watching too and the same question is running through me everyday.....WHEN'S CHARLES COMING BACK?!!!!!!!!!!

  • @crissrudd4554 Yeah, I hope it's soon too, cause I love to see the episode where he's lowered with Harry the hawk on his arm.

  • I actually just saw the episode where he left in 1974 on GSN today. Brett nearly cried!

  • RADAR O'REILLY!

    sorry.. random..

  • WE NEED SHOWS LIKE THIS ON TV NOW!!!!!

  • @BARNEYFATSWALT - agreed! But I doubt it would be as fun. These shows are "products of their time" in some ways and today everybody's way too post-modern to have fun.

  • Great imitation..

  • Charles, Brett, Richard, Betty, and Fannie were THE best!!!

  • Match game wouldn't work today because people have lost their sense of innocent flirting.

  • @maclovindotca Also, the chemistry of the panelists from the 70's would be missing today - that's why the other three remakes of the show failed miserably (especially the '98 version!)

  • @DENo1MatchGameFan - finding similar personalities and people who got along always helps. Given the nature of Hollywood, it's amazing Match Game ever got on the air and stayed on...

  • @HypnoToad72 Gotta give kudos to Mark Goodson for that one - he was a genius when he created most of his work!

  • lmao charles makes quite an entrance

  • charles sure makes an enterence

  • GAry Burghoff and Maclean Stevenson. They went from heros to zeros once they left MASH.

  • gary was great at impressions. too bad he left MASH to virtually never be heard from again

  • @ivegotalongdong Amen to that. From what I heard he left MASH in 1979 because he felt he could not bring anymore to the character of Radar. I think he also had had it with show business & was ready to walk away.

  • @ivegotalongdong Gary Burghoff left M*A*S*H on his own accord. Not only that,he left show business altogether at that point in time.

  • she got a shotgun for an easter egg hunt :)

thats what i would have said anyway :P

  • Charles Nelson Reilly must have been out of the closet by this time, and it's not as if he could have hid it anyway!

  • @landrykkb I don't think Charles was ever in the closet any more than Paul Lynde was.

  • Before CNR arrives, we get a preview of what the Match Game 98 panel would look like 23 years later, albeit with three on top and two on bottom

  • I love this show. This is also one of my favorite moments.

  • Agreed, and you never hear about it much anymore. I think because people can live longer with the disease. My uncle died in 2005 & managed to stay alive with it for about 12-13 years, not taking any medications for it until it was almost at the end.

  • I wonder did Chuck get standing ovation on this, his first episode back?

  • There has never been a gameshow as fun as this. Especially not now.

  • @barkon so true...such freedom... and great times.... u cant be uptight and watch this show, cuz it wont last long...you shuold be lose and feelin good in no time!

original match game is really omethin special...

  • @barkon --I agree, I loved this show---used to watch it when I came home from school everyday! Brett and Charles were wonderful.......

  • ROFLMAO @ 4:12, hahahahahahaha

  • Yeah, I was not sure if Charles was going to kill Gary for that. :)

  • Brett says Yay for Iowa! YAY FOR IOWA!

  • On May 25, 2007, Reilly died at his home of complications from pneumonia.

  • uhm... no he didn't. He died of pneumonia.

  • Technically no one dies of AIDS ... they die of the diseases AIDS allows to flourish in the body, including pneumonia.

  • I think you must be mistaken with your mother.

  • Charles Nelson Reilly is hilarious

  • Gary sure does an impresssion of Charles well! LOL

  • He also did a mean Johnny Olson impression as well!

  • It's really sad that people can't wait to mention how gay someone is and don't say a word about their talents.

  • @dressbenblue - must be a lot of people looking for a date..

  • Damn, what a list! LMAO!

  • @yomamadontdanz I never even heard rumors about Bert Convy's sexual orientation before.

  • Now THAT'S an entrance :D

  • Not sure why he's making the jokes about Arizona, but I love his delivery on "He died a natural death. Over Arizona"

  • we never got anything like this on the uk blankety blank - that was crap compared to this

  • R.I.P. Gene Rayburn, Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Madlyn Rhue.

  • @mylesspike119 We all gotta die sometime. As someone famous once said. Almost everyone dies from something.

  • I loved CNR in the movie "Cannon ball run".

Charles was best known for his work on the match game though. He wasen't in a lot of motion pictures but he had a lot of hollywood friends. One of Charles good friends was Burt Reynolds.

  • Wow, check out Radar O'Reilly "outing" Charles Nelson Reilly !

That clip was pretty funny, I wish I had the Game Show Network on my cable service.

  • Does anyone remember why Charles was out in the first place? I don't recall.

  • show business-outside this game

  • He was a stage actor and he was probably doing a play somewhere...

  • @nebraskame

He took leave to direct a stage play.

  • That was so funny when he asked for talcum powder.

  • As a child born in 66, I always loved loved Charles and Brett together..

  • "As a child born in 66, I always loved loved Charles and Brett together.."

Ditto from another 60's baby. The chemistry was like lighting in a bottle. Add to the mix Gene and the other panelists, and it puts todays crap to shame.

There seems to be some unwritten law today that if you have class, talent, and wit you are NOT allowed on television.

  • 66 model here. They were fabulous as well as risque. It comes on the game show channel. Ya gotta watch and go back in time with them...

  • Now that's what I call "Making an entrance!"

    God I love this show!

Did anyone notice Charles' kissing the side of Gene's head after he made the crack on Brett?

  • Charles isn't even back for two minutes before he starts taking shots at Brett. I love it!

  • For those of you who wondered when is Charles coming back to Match Game 75 . Well , he just flew into the studio Audience on yesturday's Episode & everyone including Gene Rayburn were delighted to see him back on the Panel .
