@1madmamsqueek You can buy them at your local yarn store or online (Jimmy Beans Wool is a good site). I would look for 40 or 47 inches if you are going to do magic loop. Google "best needles for magic loop" and you will see a blog post I did showing you what your options are and where to get needles.
Thanks for the video. I'm just wondering though .... for someone who's comfortable using double-pointed needles, is the Magic Loop method worthwhile? Faster? Slower?
I've only used it when I suddenly wanted to do something in-the-round and didn't have either a short enough circular or the right size double-pointed needles with me.
@jessikajean For me the main benefit of doing the Magic Loop is that you can knit two-at-a-time, which is really fun. They don't call it second-sock syndrome for nothing. It seems faster, to me... also prevents laddering, which is a common complaint for fans of DPNs. I like not having to have a short circular AND a set of DPNs for a hat project - less stuff to buy!
Thank you SO much for this video! I got some KnitPicks needles for Christmas and was having the hardest time figuring out magic loop. After about 20 abandoned attempts, I tried it again while watching (and going back, and watching again lol) your video. Thanks to you, I actually knitted with magic loop! I will definitely be practicing a lot before I start a project, but at least I (sort of) know what I'm doing now! Thank you!
@jillybean2261979 You are SO welcome! Stick with it... Practice makes perfect! You can find other great tutorials and more in depth information on knitfreedom (dot) com. :)
If a pattern calls for an odd number of stitches do you knit the same with an uneven amount of stitches on each needle? And I finally understand mostly how to do magic loop now. Time to rewatch with the needles
@dwinklerful Yep! The needles will never know if your stitches are not divided evenly. :) You can watch more videos to practice the extra challenges at knitfreedom (dot) com / classes / magic - loop :)
Liat!!! You make this look so simple!! You definitely take the fear out of trying Magic Loop! I can't wait to start a pair of socks using this technique! For insurance, I think I probably need to invest in another one of your videos (i.e. beginner socks). :) Knitting Superstar was great so I'm sure more information re: socks will be also be great!! You're a phenomenal teacher!!
Liat, you are just an angel given to so many! :) You take the hestitation out of trying something that in theory, sounds simple.. but in action becomes confusing! :) Bless you, Fellow Knitter!!
Thank you for this basic lesson- now I'm not afraid anymore of trying this technique. Going to purchase my needle & can't wait to knit the Magic Loop way.
Thank you ,Thank You so much!!!! I finally master the Magic loop with your video. Now I know that I can start my grandson's mittens using this method.

How wonderful to receive a personal reply within MINUTES of posting! And thanks for the info. I just recently discovered your site and love it, and have learned much already, even tho I have been knitting for over 50 years. Thank you!
@tdorminey1 Haha you're so welcome! I get lots of great questions through YouTube comments, so I make sure to answer them always. Thanks so much for finding my site and being my student!!
iT APPEARED TO ME THAT YOU KNITTED THE FIRST ROUND OF STS THRU THE BACK LOOP, AND SUBSEQUENT ROUNDS THRU THE FRONT AS USUAL. iS THERE A REASON FOR THIS?
@tdorminey1 Oh, yes - because of how I cast on it's easier to knit the first round through the back loops. It's not necessary, by any means. Thanks for catching that! :)
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE using the Magic Loop technique! I've been making lots and lots of socks with Magic Loop, and it makes me so very happy :) It goes so quickly, and I don't lose my dpns!
I do sincerely think you are the best instructor online, and I am almost sure you students learned a great deal from you, and thinks you are awesome. August 25 my birthday.
I know I keep saying your way of teaching is awesome, you just don't know how much you have helped me. I am praying that I get your knitting for superstar for my birthday.
@Smyelea Thanks so much! Yes, you absolutely can buy single, extra-long cables (if you mean interchangeable cables) for Magic Loop, from Addi, KnitPicks, or HiyaHiya. Google "best needles for Magic Loop" to get my take on it.
I try to magic loop knit all the time... totally a different question here... I have Addi turbo needles with different lengths... but want to purchase an interchangeable set,,, but the Addi connector seems long and I don't think it would work for loop knitting. I have been looking for reviews on interchangeable and loop knitting and cannot find anything... do you have any suggestions?
@lori1551 I have some friends that have the Addi click set and they use it for Magic Loop all the time and say it is wonderful. My friends also say that the KnitPicks interchangeable needles work great for Magic Loop.
can we use magic loop to knit a hat?i measure my head is 22 inches and my circular needle is 24 inches which is larger than my head.so,can i use magic loop method to make a hat that is 22 inches using 24 inches needle?
@farahdaparah Hi there! In order to use Magic Loop, you need at least a 36-inch long needle. I much prefer 40 or 47 inches. For the main part of the hat, you can use a 16-inch needle (that's what most people who don't know magic loop use). But when you get to the top of the hat where the diameter is smaller, you'll have to use Magic Loop or double-pointed needles, in which case I would just buy a 47-inch needle and Magic Loop the whole thing.
@farahdaparah Also, you'll need to make the hat smaller than 22" or it will slip over your eyes. You want the hat to stretch a little bit to fit right, so make it like 20 or 21 inches around. I hope this helps! :) You can also check out my Magic Loop tutorial at knitfreedom - dot - com / classes / magic - loop (take out the spaces)
@amanestel Thanks for commenting! I am very passionate about teaching people Magic Loop - I'm really glad you were able to learn from this video! I have a full Mastering Magic Loop course on my website (see my channel page) - just click video e-books. I also teach two-at-a-time socks using the same format. I invite you to check them out! Liat

I always seem to pull the magic loop part too far. I add a stitch marker at that midpoint so I can repull the loop.
