This is not the Mexico team that the United States beat in 2007 at the Gold Cup. It's not even the one that they faced in Gold Cup qualifying. Those teams had rotating platoons all over the pitch, especially at striker. Javier Hernandez is far and away better than any striker that Mexico has had between now and the prime of Jared Borgetti. Andres Guardado was always injured. Giovani dos Santos couldn't get playing time with his clubs. The back line and goalie switched around all the time.

Overall, though, watching the game you could see that the U.S. was going to score because they were getting some wide open looks. This is not the Mexico team that the United States beat in 2007 at the Gold Cup. It's not even the one that they faced in Gold Cup qualifying. Those teams had rotating platoons all over the pitch, especially at striker. Javier Hernandez is far and away better than any striker that Mexico has had between now and the prime of Jared Borgetti. Andres Guardado was always injured. Giovani dos Santos couldn't get playing time with his clubs. The back line and goalie switched around all the time.

Great win. The penalty was maybe questionable, but the second goal was beautifull. Overall, though, watching the game you could see that the U.S. was going to score because they were getting some wide open looks. Overall I don't count Mexico's win over the U.S. in 2009 because the U.S. played there B team. Not a real matchup.

Mexico has an awesome squad, the US isn't shabby either. I respect both teams immensely, but I just wish they would stop being such poor sports behind them and acknowledge that they're both great teams. Shake hands after the game, don't play dirty, these aren't difficult things to comply to. Both teams are guilty of both, and they put a bad stamp on the game.

@afromex1 You forgot that we made the quarterfinals in 2002 (who did we beat to get there? Oh, yeah, Mexico). We made the Semis in 1930, while Mexico humiliated themselves that same year. Other than Chicharito, who is getting much playing time among Mexicans among the top teams? Thought so. We may not have players on the top teams, but they play against the top teams and consistently do well against them (see: Dempsey) I would rather not qualify, than qualify and suffer humiliation.

If you actually try to learn about the other teams, you know there's more than meets the eye. And I know Salcido is getting playing time, but he's also on the same team as Dempsey. I said top TEAMS, not top leagues. Vela had to be loaned from Arsenal and Gio had to be loaned from Spurs just to get playing time! It's better to get playing time on an OK team than sit on the bench at a powerhouse (just ask Gooch at AC Milan!) Among those teams you mentioned, only ManU and PSV are "top teams" the others are OK teams in top leagues.

@feesww No, If I remember correctly, Mexico didn't qualify for 1974 or 1982, plus they didn't participate in qualifying in 1970 or 1986 as they were the hosts. So it was less Mexico domination and more American apathy. 1990 was the awakening of a sleeping CONCACAF giant, that being the US.

The Czechoslovakia game was the only game at Italia 90 where we were stomped. Only losing to hosts Italy 1-0, while we were using amateurs and college kids is quite an accomplishment. It's better than Mexico did in 1978, for example.

Those same amateurs and college kids were the same players the USA had in '94, and lost to the eventual cup champions in the Round of 16 in '94. It's not like Mexico hasn't tried this before (*cough* Guillermo Franco*cough) Also, in US wins vs. Mexico (10 of them since the start of the new millennium) Mexico scored only 1 goal. They haven't scored on US soil in a WC qualifier since 1997 (and haven't won a WCQ on US soil since 1972).

The rest of those since 1976 (where we drew 0-0) we didn't play each other, due to Mexico hosting in 1986, getting banned in 1990, and the USA hosting in 1994. You beat the US U-17 in Mexico, the last time Mexico's U17 played the USA U-17 on US Soil it was a 4-1 US victory. Try beating us abroad on a neutral site. Then we'll talk.
