  • Probably should've left out Highlander 2.

  • AMAZING INTERVIEW! I grew up on this video game like so many others and was completely SHOCKED to learn just a couple of years ago that the man behind it all was the drummer from The Police. His musical competence is truly incredible!

  • 1 man music team sweet

  • This guy is my fucking hero!

  • This man single-handedly crafted a large portion of my childhood...

  • @xyzman123 I feel absolutely the same way. When I get bored of today's FPS games, which is pretty much the only games they make anymore, I always find myself coming back to play the Spyro trilogy over and over again. I really hope I still have a PS2 and the first Spyro game lyin around when I have kids, so I can show them when games weren't all about just the gameplay, but the scenery, MUSIC, and all around feel. Thanks again Stewart! If only you could read all these nice comments...

  • "They pay me for this!"

  • We watched him compose Wild Flight in case anybody wondered

  • idk why this is one of my favorite youtube videos

  • @bigman1225: MOTU Freestyle, 1 or 2 I can't recall. It was an early Mac program, believe it or not, and the comp you see in the vid itself is a Mac too.

He's got it hooked up to a Kurzweil K2500(R), which by my research cost around $15,000-20,000. :p

  • Was searching for Stewart Copeland solo, then I see spyro O.O.

    mind = blown.

  • I watched this interview years ago and a while back when I tried to find it again all the videos had been taken down. Thanks for uploading it again!

  • THATS SO COOL!!!

  • I love this game so much... And I wish I could do what he does! I understand it, I just don't have the tools!

  • I'm 27 and I love these games soooo much :D

  • He writes the theme music.. just like that.

  • Stewart Copeland= legend!

  • Spyro was not aimed at my age group, but I did play the demo from Official Playstation Magazine and thought how similar the music was to Stewart Copeland. After watching this video I now know why. Great upload.

  • @tudgefunnel what had you heard by copeland before? Klark Kent, Rumble Fish, obscure Police songs?

  • 1:18 is a reference to where people (I was not one of these, nor could I believe that the following existed back then) would call a "service line" where you would pay, usually by minute, for someone to walk you through a part of the level or two give you a hint on how to defeat a certain enemy, etc. It dates back to the NES, back when games were nigh impossible for the average joe to beat without assistance from friends.

    THANK YOU INTERNET

  • this GUYS IS A LEJEND

  • ill missyou spyro..........nuf said

  • I wonder what software he used...

  • "don't interrupt me while I'm working !"

  • "don't interrupt me while I'm working !"

  • Copeland you are a GOD!

  • Awesome...

  • wow that's so awesome! Writing good video game music so under-rated! Cause you don't just have to make good music, but you have to make it so it doesn't get annoying over time, after many, many repeats!

  • This guy did Mozart a favor comparing himself to him.

  • I love this game I onley played this game cuz I love the music and every time I played the home worlds I would go to the flying levels fist love them I am 18 now and I am still playing this game today

  • I'm nineteen now, and this game has been the best game I've played EVER, I know that we have all these really fancy looking games now but nothing really beats the atmosphere of this game. And now that I've found out who the man behind the music is, it doesn't really amaze me anymore :)

  • BEST SOUNDTRACK CAN BE EVER MADE FOR THIS KINDA GAME. PERFECTLY FITS THE GAME!!!

  • no way! GENIUS! This is the soundtrack to my childhood!

  • this guy's got great talent for spyro music thanks stewart copeland

  • @mysynthesis: The sounds can be downloaded from the Internet? My search has yet to find any of them. :P

  • Someone tell me what program he's using! I need those Spyro instruments!

  • @Phriendship Dude, I was thinking that exact thing while watching this video years ago.

I STILL don't know where to get the sounds.

  • Comment removed

  • They pay me for this!!! :D

  • Even as a 6 year old girl I could really appreciate the soundtrack in Spyro. (Enter the Dragonfly was my first game). That just proves how great of a composer he is.

  • what keyboard is he playing there? i want to play those sounds like on spyro =P

  • @beazely94 I imagine he's using the keyboard as a MIDI controller and getting the instruments from a sound set his computer. Hence the keyboard is largely irrelevant.

That's my guess, but I'm happy to be overruled :)

  • @RhapsodyForYouBlue -- That is possible, but notice at 2:35, the Sound Selection shows "K2500R" proceeding the sound name. K2500R stands for Kurzweil K2500 Rackmount, which is a rack synth. These are Kurzweil sounds (I recognize them from my own Kurz). Funny, because the controller is a K2500X/S. It would be capable of creating/editing every sound the K2500R would be. Sounds a bit redundant. Maybe using the rackmount unit frees up storage space.

  • I just want to say i get really offended when people compare stewart copeland and god. I mean he is DAMN good, but he is no stewart copeland!

  • How much caffeine did the narrator have before recording his lines for this?

  • This game, along with Crash Bandicoot, was a huge part in my life. Those were the two best games back then. As i matured, i started to play syphon filter quite a bit as well. But i still find myself playing crash and spyro on my ps3. Great moments in gaming history.

  • "Don't interrupt me when I'm working!"

    LOL I love this guy!

  • what a genius

  • What's the name of that programm?

  • @LuxiorJesus Maybe an early version of MOTU Performer?

  • Dark Hollow is the best music in the game :D

  • Spyro - one of my first, and, honestly, one of my FAVORITE games. The music from this, and Crash, though, stands out from any other game. Most amazing composing I've ever heard. Makes me glad I work in the Video Game industry.

  • 2 peoples daddies beat them in 1998

  • the music in spyro was how I learned to interpret different styles of music from a young age. the reason i'm working on video game music today.

  • This man is a genius.

  • Awesome description at 4:30

  • Thumbs up if you found yourself dancing when he started creating the music :)

  • The music has better quality at Grooveshark. Once your in go on the search and type Spyro the dragon and find the music from Spyro.

  • Comment removed

  • he should start making music for other games

  • I'd hit it.

  • @xXHuckleberryFinnXx mmhmm gurl you know it.

  • I can't understand how 2 people dislike this video, how?

  • I love watching this video, and I hate it at the same time. I love it because it makes me want to go to my room and start composing on Garageband, but I hate it because I don't have a slightest clue how to do it. XD I still try anyway.

  • this man has influenced my life with this music, and its only now that ive heard of him?

    makes you think. :D

  • This is fricking awesome!!

  • WHY ISN'T THIS ON AN ALBUM????!?! I WANT IT GOD DAMMIT!

  • @WikiSorcerer You can download all the songs at GalbadiaHotel (dot) com and burn them to a CD and there's your album XD That's what I did.

  • This song here he just made is Wild Flight

  • Fucking love this game so much! It's been my favourite adventure game series since day one! Then it's uncharted 1 and 2 ;p

  • All the music to this game is fucking amazing.

  • THANK YOU FOR THE Song for Icy Flight!!! I love the levels song!!!

  • this is the man who created the beatiful music for my childhood game, this man was one of the guys whos awsome work was part of my childhood :D

  • Does anyone know what program he uses?

  • @dissident93 He uses K2500R

  • @xXHuckleberryFinnXx I just love learning random facts! Thanks. haha

  • @dissident93 ^^ Yeah so do I. You can download it but its I think you gotta pay though >.< It would be fun to make a song kinda like the ones he made.

  • @xXHuckleberryFinnXx Oh, me too.

  • WHAT A GUY!! <3

  • This guy is a pro, sweet and simple.

  • Many composers today can take a tip from this guy. He carefully handcrafted the tunes for each level, and each of them are so incredibly unique it's unreal.

His music pretty much made my childhood bearable. :D

  • That scary sound effect at 3:14, I am sure there was a song that started with that in the Spyro Series. can anyone tell me what it was?

  • @Failure134 Yeah. That part was, actually, a song that played during Ripto cutscenes in Spyro 2.

  • @Failure134 The song Ice Cavern also uses that scary sound effect

  • @Failure134 gnastys world maybe

  • When ever I hear this music, im taken in a time portal back to my childhood. I love this music so much! Is there any where i can download it?

  • I was that 10 year old kid!!!! this game was my childhood

  • What year was this? This game was for the PlayStation 1.

  • Can anyone help me figure out what music software Copeland uses in this video? I'm very curious. Even more important, are there any samples on the internet of the instruments he uses. I would love to be able to use them. By today's standards, there must be something out there, but I haven't been able to find anything. Looking forward to responses.

  • @synchronizerman i guess its garageband, could be wrong though

  • @synchronizerman This program is probably a very old version of Logic Pro, from Apple. I am 90% sure, as I use Logic Pro myself.

  • this guy helped create my childhood!!! :D

    awesome music, awesome

  • @nabil350 I second that, this guy created the soundtrack to my childhood :)

  • Stewart Copeland, I thank you for your work. Thank you.

  • Comment removed

  • Genius...

  • ide love to know what program he used for this

  • THIS GUY IS A FUCKING GREAT!

  • He created most of the songs ON A KEYBOARD? I want that keyboard. D:

But seriously, Stewart is a musical genius and really gave this game the energy that makes it fun to play over and over again. I've played through Spyro the Dragon at least once every year since 1998 and I never get tired of the game or his wonderful soundtrack for it.

  • Damn, Stewart Copeland's music was so good :D

  • HOLY SHIT HE WROTE THE THEME SONG LIVE!!!

  • The music he wrote in this video is the music for Wild Flight. He's a music genius!

  • Stewart Copeland FTW!

  • First the police and Spyro was my favorite! But I never knew that HE wrote the music for it! That's so awesome!

  • I'm jealous of him.

  • I downloaded all of the spyro songs and have them on my ipod:)

  • @CelebTalkWithDavid How, where'd you get the sound tracks from?/?? ;o

  • @bitmylipx first get a program that holds torrent downloads, i.e Vuze or uTorrent, then you go to a website called btjunkie dot com(dot =.) then search spyro soundrack, or simply spyro 1,2,3 in the audio search bar, and your done!!! have fun, listening to them just makes me feel all giddy inside, im still playing all three spyros lol

  • He makes creating a masterpiece look like cake. Seriously I wanna go by a keyboard right now.

  • I want to make spyro like music for games! It looks really fun! :)

  • Its like if he converted dreams into music.

  • @antisadism Very well put!

  • Loving him right now.... jesus christ, genius. He does what he wants to do and we love that!

I hate gaming as an "industry". Gaming is an art! and someone needs to tell these money grabbing suits this.

    Who's with me?!

  • @TheOneLichemperor Yes video game design is an art and I always thought spyro 1 was exemplary of a video game that you could call a work of art. It wasn't particularly challenging, playing it was almost passive but you'd play it to immerse yourself in the rich pastel landscapes and music. There was never a moment in the game that really reminded you that you were playing a game which allowed you to get lost in the surreal whimsy of the dragon worlds.

  • What a boss.

  • What Program Was He Using?

  • Spyro 1 music, is absolutely amazing, just listen to Misty Bog, Beast Makers, Dream Weavers, Metalhead, Tree Tops, Jacques, Haunted Towers, Wizard Peak, Blowhard ohhhhh the list goes on and on! The best composer since Mozart, and im NOT just saying that.

  • and the guitar chords in Charmed Ridge..Dark Passage..the bass lines in Spooky Swamp, Midday Gardens..damn!!

  • He played the synth/piano lines and the drums himself, and recorded them and used them in the game which is awesome

Just listen to Crystal Glacier or Sunrise Spring, such a Copeland feel in those drums man! Especially the snare drum! Sounds freaking great

  • i'd marry him. lol

  • Haha, before I even knew the police, as a little 7 year old, I LOVED the Spryo music. It must have been destiny for The Police to be my favorite band :)

  • @only4tsc: Nice find! The samples really do sound like his, but... I don't think he used it for all of them...

  • If you look on the screen, a number next to each of all the sound effects appears, which is "K2500R", which when Googled gives a synth module, so this must be where he gets the sounds from.

  • @only4tsc Hey! Nice find!!!

  • Such a thug.

  • Two people don't appreciate good composers or music. >.>

  • Could watch this over and over again. How do one manage to connect a keyboard to a computer? Would this also work with GuitarPro?

  • @KeybladeKorney Keyboard + MIDI Ports + MIDI to USB cable = all set and ready to go... aside from the software instruments. >.<

  • @Supersoradude Wut's MIDI? Heard abot it often but never understood

  • @KeybladeKorney MIDI stands for Music Instrument Digital Interface. In simple terms... it merely allows your keyboard or other MIDI-enabled device to connect and interact with your computer. To be honest, I've only been using it for about a year, I'm almost new to it, as far as technical info goes... =P

  • i have loved spyro for 12 years i am only 15

  • I'll go out on a limb here and say he probably used an early version of Samplitude.

  • @blobloblo6

I don't think it's Samplitude, I'm pretty sure it's Digital Performer. The transpose and quantize menus have barely changed in the last twelve years.

  • @TheTomToday I just took a look at samplitude, and I'd have to agree with you there. It looks identical to that of the video.

  • @TheTomToday Agreed... if that's not what he used, then I'd be shocked.

  • does anyone know wher i can buy the album?

  • Ahhh, Copeland. His music plays at my heartstrings. Ahaha..no, but seriously, whenever I got to his website for the vault, I always get so nostalgic, and immediately want to play the games again.

I seriously believe he is my favorite composer of all time.

  • My music teacher had us pick our favorite composer and write a full report on them. I chose Copeland, and used his music from the Spyro series as the main base on the report. We love you Stewart, live long and rock hard.

  • @blobloblo6

I'm glad you chose Spyro msuic as your topic. The music in the first 3 were genius, some I've listened to 10 minutes straite.By the way, did you get a grade on it yet? If so I hope it's an A :D

  • @blobloblo6 did u get an A+

  • @superspy6 I'm presenting it with my friend tomorrow.

  • @superspy6 We got best in class.

  • Copeland is such an inspiration. Absolutely adored those Spyro games, and the music has a lot to do with it. His trademark sound also comes through really well on Dead Like Me (great show)

  • I would have to say that the music he did for spyro is by far the best work of art he has ever done. This guy should have got together a band to play this stuff live in a venue. I would have payed to see it!!! Cool video. Nostalgia, nostalgia, nostalgia... Ah i can listen to the music from the first spyro and go back to a mystical imaginative time of my life.

  • @guyguyguy742 Good thinking. Nabuo Eumatsu who composed the music for the Final Fantasy games has formed the rock group named The Black Mages to perform his music live and has been highly succesful.

  • @guyguyguy742 Well I have his Opera Holy Blood and Crescent Moon but I still agree with you. Well it's definitely a toss up between this and the Rumble Fish score.

  • @guyguyguy742 ok i love the spyro the dragon sound track but its stewart copeland he was in the fricken poice one of the best drumers of all time. He invented his own drum style

  • Oh gooooood that is so awesome ;____; I wanna make music now.

  • wish i can have a gun the shoots genius and shoot him in the face with it <3

  • I still find myself humming those catchy songs, why can't the music in new games be so complex an memorable?

  • What program does he use?

  • I still love this video it's so interesting how he created it all. I really hope to be someone like him.

  • it more than survives repeated listenings! people will play the game just for the music. ive watched this video more than 20 times...

  • Comment removed

  • "Don't inerrupt me when I'm working" xD

  • Without his music, Spyro the Dragon would have no gem-like feeling in the game.

  • amo a stewart copeland, uno de los mejores compositores de musica

  • He used GarageBand. I don't know the keyboard he's using.

I love what he has to say about creating music for video games. A piece of music from a video game has to have a central idea but can't stray too far from that idea. (A gloomy level can't have too many uplifting sections; or a bright, happy level can't move to a haunting feel.)

  • @Tengent

He didnt use garage band, garage band was created in 2002, and spyro 1 was released in 1998.

it may look like garage band, but in reality, its a far different programme.

i personally dont know what programme he is using, but dont shout out and say he uses a software he doesnt actually use,

  • @BluntAnim Many many people before me always said he used Garageband. It was a continuous spread of disinformation. I never took the time to do the research.

  • Thank you for not wasting such a great talent

  • I played that game ages ago lol, but I still love the music. I'd like to be a composer like him and what he does in this video :D The organ and guitar is great!

  • OH that tune at 3mins, MEMORIES!!

  • He is the drummer of The Police.

  • Anyone have an idea what program he used to make the music?

  • @mrthingus Its probably really out of date.

  • @RespawnStation I don't think the program he's using could ever be out-of-date for creating masterpieces like these.

  • It's definitely not FL Studio. I've been working on FL for years, this is NOT FL. This is either Cubase or Pro Tools. Perhaps something else.

  • Like Magic....

  • I'm seeing a highly Mac-like menubar, something definitely not in any Windows Machine of the time... I'd give just about anything to find out what instruments he used.

  • This guy is probably the reason why the music in this game was so cool!!

  • I wonder what synth he used. Does anyone know?

  • i wish i was him
