AMAZING INTERVIEW! I grew up on this video game like so many others and was completely SHOCKED to learn just a couple of years ago that the man behind it all was the drummer from The Police. His musical competence is truly incredible!
@xyzman123 I feel absolutely the same way. When I get bored of today's FPS games, which is pretty much the only games they make anymore, I always find myself coming back to play the Spyro trilogy over and over again. I really hope I still have a PS2 and the first Spyro game lyin around when I have kids, so I can show them when games weren't all about just the gameplay, but the scenery, MUSIC, and all around feel. Thanks again Stewart! If only you could read all these nice comments...
@bigman1225: MOTU Freestyle, 1 or 2 I can't recall. It was an early Mac program, believe it or not, and the comp you see in the vid itself is a Mac too.
He's got it hooked up to a Kurzweil K2500(R), which by my research cost around $15,000-20,000. :p
Spyro was not aimed at my age group, but I did play the demo from Official Playstation Magazine and thought how similar the music was to Stewart Copeland. After watching this video I now know why. Great upload.
1:18 is a reference to where people (I was not one of these, nor could I believe that the following existed back then) would call a "service line" where you would pay, usually by minute, for someone to walk you through a part of the level or two give you a hint on how to defeat a certain enemy, etc. It dates back to the NES, back when games were nigh impossible for the average joe to beat without assistance from friends.
wow that's so awesome! Writing good video game music so under-rated! Cause you don't just have to make good music, but you have to make it so it doesn't get annoying over time, after many, many repeats!
I love this game I onley played this game cuz I love the music and every time I played the home worlds I would go to the flying levels fist love them I am 18 now and I am still playing this game today
I'm nineteen now, and this game has been the best game I've played EVER, I know that we have all these really fancy looking games now but nothing really beats the atmosphere of this game. And now that I've found out who the man behind the music is, it doesn't really amaze me anymore :)
Even as a 6 year old girl I could really appreciate the soundtrack in Spyro. (Enter the Dragonfly was my first game). That just proves how great of a composer he is.
@beazely94 I imagine he's using the keyboard as a MIDI controller and getting the instruments from a sound set his computer. Hence the keyboard is largely irrelevant.
@RhapsodyForYouBlue -- That is possible, but notice at 2:35, the Sound Selection shows "K2500R" proceeding the sound name. K2500R stands for Kurzweil K2500 Rackmount, which is a rack synth. These are Kurzweil sounds (I recognize them from my own Kurz). Funny, because the controller is a K2500X/S. It would be capable of creating/editing every sound the K2500R would be. Sounds a bit redundant. Maybe using the rackmount unit frees up storage space.
@Beazely94: The keyboard is a Kurzweil K2500X/S. It was discontinued in the late '90s and replaced by the K2600X/S, which has since been replaced by the PC3 series. I own a K2600X, and it is a wonderful machine. Very similar to this K2500, only more refined in processing power. Sounds can be downloaded from the Internet, or tweaked/created using the keyboard itself (VAST), so there is no guarantee that any/every Kurzweil will have these sounds.
This game, along with Crash Bandicoot, was a huge part in my life. Those were the two best games back then. As i matured, i started to play syphon filter quite a bit as well. But i still find myself playing crash and spyro on my ps3. Great moments in gaming history.
Spyro - one of my first, and, honestly, one of my FAVORITE games. The music from this, and Crash, though, stands out from any other game. Most amazing composing I've ever heard. Makes me glad I work in the Video Game industry.
I love watching this video, and I hate it at the same time. I love it because it makes me want to go to my room and start composing on Garageband, but I hate it because I don't have a slightest clue how to do it. XD I still try anyway.
@dissident93 ^^ Yeah so do I. You can download it but its I think you gotta pay though >.< It would be fun to make a song kinda like the ones he made.
Many composers today can take a tip from this guy. He carefully handcrafted the tunes for each level, and each of them are so incredibly unique it's unreal.
His music pretty much made my childhood bearable. :D
Can anyone help me figure out what music software Copeland uses in this video? I'm very curious. Even more important, are there any samples on the internet of the instruments he uses. I would love to be able to use them. By today's standards, there must be something out there, but I haven't been able to find anything. Looking forward to responses.
He created most of the songs ON A KEYBOARD? I want that keyboard. D:
But seriously, Stewart is a musical genius and really gave this game the energy that makes it fun to play over and over again. I've played through Spyro the Dragon at least once every year since 1998 and I never get tired of the game or his wonderful soundtrack for it.
@bitmylipx first get a program that holds torrent downloads, i.e Vuze or uTorrent, then you go to a website called btjunkie dot com(dot =.) then search spyro soundrack, or simply spyro 1,2,3 in the audio search bar, and your done!!! have fun, listening to them just makes me feel all giddy inside, im still playing all three spyros lol
@TheOneLichemperor Yes video game design is an art and I always thought spyro 1 was exemplary of a video game that you could call a work of art. It wasn't particularly challenging, playing it was almost passive but you'd play it to immerse yourself in the rich pastel landscapes and music. There was never a moment in the game that really reminded you that you were playing a game which allowed you to get lost in the surreal whimsy of the dragon worlds.
Spyro 1 music, is absolutely amazing, just listen to Misty Bog, Beast Makers, Dream Weavers, Metalhead, Tree Tops, Jacques, Haunted Towers, Wizard Peak, Blowhard ohhhhh the list goes on and on! The best composer since Mozart, and im NOT just saying that.
Haha, before I even knew the police, as a little 7 year old, I LOVED the Spryo music. It must have been destiny for The Police to be my favorite band :)
If you look on the screen, a number next to each of all the sound effects appears, which is "K2500R", which when Googled gives a synth module, so this must be where he gets the sounds from.
@KeybladeKorney MIDI stands for Music Instrument Digital Interface. In simple terms... it merely allows your keyboard or other MIDI-enabled device to connect and interact with your computer. To be honest, I've only been using it for about a year, I'm almost new to it, as far as technical info goes... =P
Ahhh, Copeland. His music plays at my heartstrings. Ahaha..no, but seriously, whenever I got to his website for the vault, I always get so nostalgic, and immediately want to play the games again.
I seriously believe he is my favorite composer of all time.
My music teacher had us pick our favorite composer and write a full report on them. I chose Copeland, and used his music from the Spyro series as the main base on the report. We love you Stewart, live long and rock hard.
I'm glad you chose Spyro msuic as your topic. The music in the first 3 were genius, some I've listened to 10 minutes straite.By the way, did you get a grade on it yet? If so I hope it's an A :D
Copeland is such an inspiration. Absolutely adored those Spyro games, and the music has a lot to do with it. His trademark sound also comes through really well on Dead Like Me (great show)
I would have to say that the music he did for spyro is by far the best work of art he has ever done. This guy should have got together a band to play this stuff live in a venue. I would have payed to see it!!! Cool video. Nostalgia, nostalgia, nostalgia... Ah i can listen to the music from the first spyro and go back to a mystical imaginative time of my life.
@guyguyguy742 Good thinking. Nabuo Eumatsu who composed the music for the Final Fantasy games has formed the rock group named The Black Mages to perform his music live and has been highly succesful.
@guyguyguy742 Well I have his Opera Holy Blood and Crescent Moon but I still agree with you. Well it's definitely a toss up between this and the Rumble Fish score.
@guyguyguy742 ok i love the spyro the dragon sound track but its stewart copeland he was in the fricken poice one of the best drumers of all time. He invented his own drum style
He used GarageBand. I don't know the keyboard he's using.
I love what he has to say about creating music for video games. A piece of music from a video game has to have a central idea but can't stray too far from that idea. (A gloomy level can't have too many uplifting sections; or a bright, happy level can't move to a haunting feel.)
@BluntAnim Many many people before me always said he used Garageband. It was a continuous spread of disinformation. I never took the time to do the research.
I played that game ages ago lol, but I still love the music. I'd like to be a composer like him and what he does in this video :D The organ and guitar is great!
I'm seeing a highly Mac-like menubar, something definitely not in any Windows Machine of the time... I'd give just about anything to find out what instruments he used.
This has been flagged as spam show
I'm 100% sure that he's using MOTU Digital Performer on a Mac, with a Kurzweil K2500R Keyboard, for those wondering what it is he's using here.

I still find myself humming those catchy songs, why can't the music in new games be so complex an memorable?

Without his music, Spyro the Dragon would have no gem-like feeling in the game.

amo a stewart copeland, uno de los mejores compositores de musica

He used GarageBand. I don't know the keyboard he's using.
I love what he has to say about creating music for video games. A piece of music from a video game has to have a central idea but can't stray too far from that idea. (A gloomy level can't have too many uplifting sections; or a bright, happy level can't move to a haunting feel.)

@Tengent
He didnt use garage band, garage band was created in 2002, and spyro 1 was released in 1998.
it may look like garage band, but in reality, its a far different programme.
i personally dont know what programme he is using, but dont shout out and say he uses a software he doesnt actually use,
BluntAnim 1 year ago
@BluntAnim Many many people before me always said he used Garageband. It was a continuous spread of disinformation. I never took the time to do the research.

Anyone have an idea what program he used to make the music?
mrthingus 1 year ago
@mrthingus Its probably really out of date.
RespawnStation 1 year ago
@RespawnStation I don't think the program he's using could ever be out-of-date for creating masterpieces like these.

It's definitely not FL Studio. I've been working on FL for years, this is NOT FL. This is either Cubase or Pro Tools. Perhaps something else.

I'm seeing a highly Mac-like menubar, something definitely not in any Windows Machine of the time... I'd give just about anything to find out what instruments he used.

This guy is probably the reason why the music in this game was so cool!!
