I seem to think this was filmed at Buddy Killins The Stock Yards in Nashville and oh yea I think Kieth was doing another movie called the Long Riders at that time with his brothers David and Robert?
This song was written about musical theater actress Shelley Plimpton, who was in the original cast of "Hair". Carradine had a crush on her when he wrote this, and they later had a child together, the actress Martha Plimpton.
I loved the Oscars that year...after a series of Best Song nominees that were produced within an inch of their lives, Keith Carradine came out with a stool and a guitar and sang this nominee...and went home with the Oscar.

This is one of my all time favorite songs. This particular song takes me back to the reckless days when I played the game and sometimes lost and some times won. There was a girl from Oregon, I lived in California at the time, that wanted something more permanent. I was not into getting married at the time. I hope she finally found what she was looking for..
@blakiecakes419 He's only a douche because he can't have who he really wants - Lily Tomlin. She's the only one he cares about, and she won't reciprocate.
@queenlvr46 - He didn't seem to even genuinely cared about the Lily Tomlin character. In the film she invites him over to spend time with her and her kids and he seemed only to want to meet her for a one night stand.
@thx291 Disagree. She invites him over on the phone because she wants to make their conversation sound more legitimate to her husband so he's not suspicious. She's not really inviting him. SHE'S the one who leaves HIM abruptly, just when he's opening up, asking her how to sign "I love you", etc. Which is why he gets hurt & immediately calls another woman, in order to hurt her back. But she doesn't react, which hurts him even more. So he hangs up on the other woman the second she's gone.
@queenlvr46 Regardless, she still invited him to her home to meet her children and he was completely uninterested. If he truly cared about her he would've wanted to meet her family. And then he says to the Scott Glenn character, "did you kill anyone this week?" The guy was a complete jerk. Even Robert Altman said in an interview that the Keith Carradine character was a womanizer and a sick guy.
@thx291 I'm having difficulty replying to your latest comment so I'm replying again to this. The reason she "invites" him is to say "Oh, you wanna see me? Fine. But we're not doing what we did before" - it's sort of implied they've already slept together or something like that. She's trying to push him away without saying so outright - she's playing dumb, like she doesn't know what he's driving at. It's not an actual invite. And why would he go anyway? (cont'd)
@thx291 (cont'd) He's the guy who wants to sleep with her. Why *would* he try meet her family? And just because he's a "womanizer and a sick guy" doesn't make him a douche. He's a deeply flawed character. And the fact is, this woman adores her children and would never leave them, but she is drawn to Tom. She smiles happily, even coyly, when he calls even as she's playing dumb by inviting him over when she KNOWS why he wants to see her. I think you're misinterpreting the whole thing.
@queenlvr46 - I thought you said he cared about her. Now you seem to be saying he only wants to sleep with her (which is what my point was.) Whether she was genuine in her invitation is not the point. The point is if a man really cares for a woman he won't show complete disinterest in meeting her children like he did. And yes I'd say being a womanizer and vindictive sick guy does make one a bit of a douche.
@thx291 i think its interesting that the level of interest on the part of her husband was minimal. He seems like he can barely understand his children, and shows little interest and/or patience while his child talks about passing the swimming test. So a man does not have to be a womanizer to be bad to women or toward their children...a man might treat a woman "right" by marrying her, but that leaves him wide open to mistreat her in other ways, such as having 2 kids but having her raise them
@thx291 i think its interesting that the level of interest on the part of her husband was minimal. @thx291 I think you're too busy trying to reduce this to black and white to see the nuance. Yes, he's calling her so they can get together in a hotel room. But he clearly can't express what he really feels outside of the song he sings for her, and when they're actually together in bed. He doesn't know how to be, or how to really treat a woman. He's a spoiled, petulant child. Not the same as a vindictive, sick guy. That's a little harsh.
@queenlvr46 I see your point now. He's such a womanizing jerk that he isn't capable of expressing his feelings for a woman he cares for in a mature effective manner.
This song was written for Martha Plimpton's mother, the actress Shelley Plimpton. Carradine appeared in the Broadway production of the musical "Hair" with her, and composed the song to woo her.
It's the best scene in any movie I've ever seen. Every woman in the room thinks he's singing it to her, and then the gradual focus on Lily and her heartbreaking expression. Pure genius, and a gorgeous song to boot.
One of the greatest scenes in film....I've watched it dozens of times and still am stunned by how moving and powerful it is despite the simplicity of the environment and the subtle comedy. The song itself is merely a catalyst; Tomlin's face is the punch for the viewer.

Great song~! Remember being stoned and feeling really good when I first saw this film in college, projected against a wall in the dorms. Great memories of this film and that entire evening!
Honestly, her performance was OK to me, yet I believe she deserved better songs which she never had. Not as breathtaking as Carradine`s "easy" and Tomlin`s holding back.
@TheOscarFiles thank you! i always thought it was just me. this has got to be one of the sexiest scenes ever. so subtle and understated and yet you an see shes breathless watching him sing to her. (hated the rest of the movie btw, saw it when it 1st came out, but this scene always stayed with me)
Carradine's one of our finest artists. Outside of the small amount of love he receives from fans and some media, I hope he gets the chance to prove himself as a movie star lead. Wish he'd sing on screen again.
And they all notice that he's not looking at them. He's looking at the lady in the back, and they're surprised. He's singing it to Lily Tomlin. Such a brilliant, beautiful, poignant scene.
He is still a fine looking man. He was in a documentary "Hair. Let the Sunshine In" talking about his experiences. I saw him as "Woof" on Broadway in Hair in 1969.
This is my favorite scene from the movie. It's a great song, and you can practically see the waves of pain and longing coming off Lily Tomlin's character when he's singing. Such an excellent scene!
Exactly as I feel..Tears well up my ears when I watch this- Tomlin says so much here merely by her expression..Duvall, Chaplin and all involved in this masterpiece are all brillant. A film like this will never come again..Hollywood majesty!!
I fell in love with Keith Carradine the very first time I saw him and his two brothers David and Robert in the movie, The Long Riders. He is, by far, one of the most wonderful singers of all time. Such heart and soul in his voice ... a gift from heaven. May he and his family get through this most difficult time of healing over the loss of David Carradine. My heart truly hurts for them all...
i like how this nashville crowd is almost half made up of models. real country folk do not look that good. Some do of course, but they tend to draw on a larger swathe of real american people. not cute comedians and escapees from victorias secret
I still like Carradine's character in The Duellists a lot more! Plus, Christina Raines is in that movie too(they were dating at the time) and he's a lot nicer to her in that movie!
such a beautiful song. i was only 5 years old when the movie came out and i never saw it,just read about it. so who do you think was that song really for, looking at all those women in the bar? i also heard that during the oscars, when keith sang this song,he received a standing ovation.if true,he deserved it.
I wrote in a movie review that this is the most darkly humorous, romantic, and sad scenes in cinema history. Keith Carradine's character was the ultimate womanizer, yet in trying to woo Lily Tomlin he delivered an amazingly beautiful ballad that makes viewers forget for a few minutes the true man that he is. And each of the women's reactions is priceless; I especially like Chaplin's doe-eyed innocence and Tomlin's subdued rapture.
I know this is a serious scene, and don't get me wrong, I live for Shelley Duvall, but whenever she's in the frame with those buck teeth and perm, I CRACK UP!!
Yeah, Lily Tomlin is the star of the scene, not the singer. But the song is great and well performed. Anyone could have sung it, but few could have pulled off what Lily Tomlin did. I agree with others, maybe the most memorable part of that great movie.
I think Lily Tomlin should have won the Oscar she was nominated for. I love this scene because all those girls in there that are smirking so think ti's about them and the one that it's about is in the back just spellbound.
Is Geraldine Chaplin the british girl with the hat on? And Cristina Raines is the one with the long dark hair who is in the band with him and husband right?
As one critic said "Damndest picture I ever saw" This is one of my all time favorites, along with Neil Diamond and Shirley Bassey singing Play Me. Check that video out. It shows a very young Bassey, and the emotional rapport between these two is astonishingly tender, almost loving. Bravo !

It is one of the great movie scenes.
With one of the best, if not the best song written directly for a film.
The kind of mature, character driven moments we don't see in film anymore.
It's moving because the moment is about regular people experiencing emotions
we all encounter at some point in our lives.
Yeah, Lily Tomlin is the weight of this scene,
with her frozen stare, and shutting her eyes toward the end.

Keith Carradine is such a bastard in this movie.
Baldenlong77 2 years ago
@Baldenlong77 In other words, Keith's character is like many human beings.
That's what makes this film so special
-it explores human truths
-without robots, explosions, superheroes, or screaming teenagers.

I still like Carradine's character in The Duellists a lot more! Plus, Christina Raines is in that movie too(they were dating at the time) and he's a lot nicer to her in that movie!

Great song, hadn't listened to it for ages... will have to watch the movie!

such a beautiful song. i was only 5 years old when the movie came out and i never saw it,just read about it. so who do you think was that song really for, looking at all those women in the bar? i also heard that during the oscars, when keith sang this song,he received a standing ovation.if true,he deserved it.
niteranger0127 2 years ago
He's singing for Lily Tomlin, in the back. He calls her on the phone the entire movie trying to meet up with her. See it, it's a beautiful film!

Can you even imagine this guy writing this song for you, Oh Man!

Me too. The charactors are so lost and desperate. i love them all and relate too much.

What are the names of the 4 women? I recognise Lily Tomlin and Shelley Duvall. Who is the one at 2:06--2:13?

Cristina Raines and Geraldine Chaplin

Is Geraldine Chaplin the british girl with the hat on? And Cristina Raines is the one with the long dark hair who is in the band with him and husband right?

One of the most incredibly subtle scenes in any movie; it does so much with so little.

As one critic said "Damndest picture I ever saw" This is one of my all time favorites, along with Neil Diamond and Shirley Bassey singing Play Me. Check that video out. It shows a very young Bassey, and the emotional rapport between these two is astonishingly tender, almost loving. Bravo !
